I just dont see how its possible for just a couple of pins to bend and not alot of the others around unless there was a foreign object in that exact spot or the pins were just a bit longer than all of the other ones.

The pins that are bent now being longer would also make sense to me due to the fact the CPU has an indention / blemish in that spot

Definitely did not drop anything into the socket and I was pretty careful about seating the CPU.  But like I said, I didn't examine the socket too closely before I seated the CPU.

Don't really see any blemishes on the CPU (That earlier pic I posted was just a fleck of white'ish dust as it just blew off easily enough) -

Don't worry about the cooler leaking.  It has happened, yes, but the chances are really really rare.  They are awesome and look sick.  They have also been around for awhile now so failure is less.  Go for it...  (do it).

Yeah! Ok, maybe.  Pretty sure the H110 will fit in the R4 case.  But still have to see what's left in the budget after I find out how much EVGA is gonna charge me for the board repair.  And when I get the board back let me make sure I didn't fry the CPU.

It's been a while since I was on a EVGA mboard, January '07 to be exact (several EVGA vid cards since, though).

Which means the 680i A1 swapped to the AR shortly after purchase was my last EVGA motherboard.

Actually, just last week I retired my Supermicro P4DCE+II dual Xeon Prestonia board after over 12 years of abuse and the 680i with 4gb ram and a Q6600 (won't even tell you how much I payed for either beasts at launch) is now my main web, email, file server machine.

The P4DCE+II was a fantastic Max, After Effects, Photoshop machine.  Still is, honestly.

And my EVGA EVGA 680i 775 AR is still a damned monster.

But the EVGA X99 FTW with a 5960x, 32gb of G.skill Ripjaws 2400 ram, and until the budget allows just a single evga 780ti, is about to become my main creation and gaming mahsheeen.

The freebee Torq x10 mouse through Newegg with a EVGA x99 mboard purchase was a nice touch.

Newegg delivery arrived tonight at 7pm sharp via UPS, forgive the dark cell phone pic.

Hoping for reliving those glory days...

 *edited for clarification.

you got the same PSU / SSD / GPU as me.  epic choices.  The classy will do very nicely in your rig. :D

As for watercooling, most AIOs (corsair, coolermaster, etc.,) don't leak.  I have an H220x in my rig (see my mods rigs), and even though it's expandable, has a monster pump, 3/8 ID and 5/8 OD tubing, etc., it doesn't leak.  It looks amazing, and it keeps my CPU cool.  (I ran linpack for 12 hrs and it didn't go above 66 Deg C)

Well, with the release of the GTX 980/970's I got it in my mind tonight to send my Corsair PSU and 780ti back to newegg, then purchase the EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 PSU and 2 EVGA 970's for SLI.

Then I was hit with the fact that newegg doesn't refund video cards at all.  Ouch.  Never had to return one, so I didn't realize.

EVGA, can you pull some strings with newegg and get me a refund on the 780ti!?!  It's been a mere 21 days after I purchase your *flagship card!

Also, somewhat more importantly, EVGA is shipping another x99 FTW back to me.  70$.  Can't complain, really.  Sucks though that between the repair cost for the bent sockets and the shipping, I could've bought the x99 Classified.

Oh, well.  Live and learn...or not.

*ok, flagship is a tad harsh. But, still.

Re: Coming back to Evga 2014/09/24 21:53:44 (permalink)
Got my rma'ed x99 board back today from EVGA.  Thanks EVGA, I was expecting a janky, bubble wrapped, refurb board, but what I got back was a brand new, shrink-wrapped box.  So, much thanks for that.

Also, Luck was a lady and I didn't fry my 5960x!

Then in the past 3 hours I sold the 5960x to a friend who was ready to buy and then went to a local shop and picked up a 5930k with the intention of putting the difference towards another 780Ti and a more powerful PSU.  I know, I know.  I really want SLI this time, though.

In any case, been running prime95 for about an hour with the (hand tightened) Zalman CNPS9900 Max (with the resistor).  Temps seem to be in the mid to high 60's at 100% load.  Ambient room temp is close to 26.

Samsung SSD in Sata 0, WD VelociRaptor 10k/6gb in Sata 1. Sound Blaster Z functioning and recognized in slot 5.  And the GTX 780 Ti Dual Classified sitting fine in slot 1.

All 32 gigs of G.Skill 2133 ram is recognized in bios and Windows.

First time with a SSD.  WOW!  Windows 7 64 installed in about 10 minutes from a USB 2 stick and it takes just under about 11 seconds to hit the Windows login screen from power on.

Can't wait to see how see how this machine handles 3ds Max and After Effects work!

Soon as I confirm my workflow and software are working as expected at stock, I'll start overclocking things!

Well, she's the most beautiful I've built, no question...if not the most colorful (really enjoy the bevel on the acrylic window on the Fractal Design R4 and how it refracts the light).  Anfd against popular opinion, I've always been a fan of Creative's products since the Sound Blaster AWE64 days.  So as a bonus, I'm really digging it's red ambient light.  Nice going Creative.  More importantly, the card sounds fantastic.

Yessir, that's WatchDogs.  Really?  What else would it be?  I live in Chicago.

Have to say, though, I've been working on-site these past few days -- on a Mac, no less, very well equipped, but still -- so, I haven't had a chance to do any 3ds Max/AE/PS/IL work on this new beast to put it through it's paces.

But, I did find an hour to install Watchdogs and fire that up.  Everything cranked to Ultra, except the AA, I kept fiddling with that.  As usual, everything but "Off", just kinda made me feel like everything was too blurry.

No disappointments there, though.  Bear with me since ATM I have no frames/sec data, but it was as damn smooth as I could have ever hoped, especially after reading many complaints at UBI about how ****ty the PC port was.

That's the good.  Really good, actually.

The bad is that I cannot get the XMP profiles to work for my G.Skill RAM.  "Auto" seems to work just fine, though.

However, I did switch to "Manual" and inputted the timings myself, just in case.

So far, I couldn't be more pleased with this build.

I'm glad because everything is OK with that expensive CPU, from other side I think you are right...
SuperNOVA 1000 is far better PSU and should came on place of that CORSAIR RM... For GTX970 SLI I'm not sure, but that's because I love GTX780Ti Classified.
Anyway EVGA GTX970 FTW when show up would be excellent and everything fit nice under 1000 G2/P2.
You have one more nice option that's 1200P2 and 2xGTX780Ti Classified.
Or even to keep money, sell own GTX780Ti Classified and invest in 2xGTX980 FTW, you have many many choices.
For 2xGTX780Ti Classified and 5960X 1200 P2 is recommended for my opinion.
For 2x980 FTW/Classified and 5960X 1000 P2 is fine.
Price difference between build SLI with GTX780Ti Classified and selling that card because investment in 2xGTX980 is not big at all.

Mine computer shine absolutely same as yours, I think even lights on motherboards are on same position.
And on graphic card and on sound card.
With 2 simple voltmeter you can check voltage both and on GPU and on Motherboard on same way with same tool. That's nice always.
You can even keep closed side panel. On Rampage 5 Extreme I notice owners must hold voltmeter in hand non stop.

Ran several benchmarks this afternoon with a simple overclock, multiplier increased to 40 and voltages left to auto.  RAM not touched since just a CPU multiplier increase.  780ti at stock with Nvidia 344.11 driver:

Here are some results:

Specwpc:

Cinebench:

Heaven Benchmark:

3DMARK11:

3DMARK (this one also shows and earlier result at stock CPU speed):

After Effects CUDA Raytracing benchmark from http://www.teddygage.com (details here: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/1019120 and http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1587574 ):

Very old 3ds Max, yet still relevant, MentalRay benchmark @ 32 bucket size: (details here: http://www.evermotion.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?46777-3dsmax-rendering-benchmark):

3ds Max Viewport GPU benchmark (details here: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-hardware-os/graphics-card-benchmark/td-p/4293383 and http://forums.cgarchitect.com/73746-graphics-card-benchmark.html):

Photoshop speed test (no built in timer, so must use a stopwatch) from http://clubofone.com/speedtest/ (details here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=200558) 7.36 seconds:

I didn't record or log any CPU/GPU temps during any of the benchmarks, but I did occasionally/randomly check and CPU never got much past 72c or so and the GPU with and aggressive fan profile never left the mid-70's.

And finally a SS of various system monitors at idle, but having been benched a for a good part of the day at a room temp of about 22c:

*edit to add Max Viewport test

Gut, I'm sure EVGA can repair or replace .your socket. Don't beat yourself up over it. It happens to the best of us. There are so many darn pins! I happened to have bent a few on my old X58 Classy several years back and EVGA replaced the socket for around 50 bucks. Probably a bit more in todays dollars. Although I didn't come back to EVGA for my X99 build, I bricked my brand new Asus board doing a BIOS flash and had to RMA it. After being so used to the internal CPU socket protectors from X58 when I tried it on the new X99 I bent a few pins in the board myself. Newegg refused the return but the team fro A___ repaired the socket and replaced the BIOS chip under warranty but me being impatient and sitting on 4K worth of parts I ended up buying another board while it was under RMA with the manufacturer. Now I'm the proud owner of two X99 boards. LOL

But oh yes, EVGA did replace and send me a new board weeks ago.

After I destroyed/smashed the pins in the LGA CPU socket by tightening the the heatsink & fan too much, EVGA did RMA the board.

As far as I'm concerned they might have just as well said, "screw you dummy, buy a new board at retail".

They didn't though and they shipped me a new, not repaired or refurbished, board in the box for a nominal fee.  And in doing so, pretty much cemented that my next upgrade will be as much EVGA product as possible.

So far, I couldn't be happier with my EVGA X99 FTW and EVGA 780ti Classified!

This machine is just crushing any work or gaming that I throw at it.

And sorry, here's another blurry photo of this beauty at my feet and she looks amazing doing it:

Ugh, LGA...is not my favorite.

Why Zalman?  I tend to be a loyal consumer.  The photos I've posted earlier?  That green glow on the other machine in the background is a Zalman CNPS 9700 NT and it has been running like a champ 24/7 on an EVGA 680i/Q6600 for over 6 years.

Interesting you ask, though.  I just noticed this evening, while snapping that last photo, that the Zalman CNPS9900MAX-B seems to be spitting lubricant onto the case window.  Not too cool, Zalman.

@spf33 Welcome back! Like you, I've been out in the tech wilderness, for a few!
There's something about "the build" that is immensely satisfying. My challenge is getting a tidy interior, with a case, though expensive, and state-of-the-art, in it's day (Interesting that Silverstone, has stopped producing "enthusiast towers"), does not lend itself to neat cabling.
Good job with, an attractive build. It's not just how it performs, it's got to look good too; then you can stand back, and admire your work of art

Same here, it doesn't make sense!

Well, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I did tighten down the Zalman cooler screws pretty hard and probably should've known better.   LGA sockets are more prone to damage from this sort of thing than PGA sockets.

And in my haste to get the machine built and running I didn't really examine or photograph the socket when I first unpacked it, so who knows truly what condition it was in.

All I do know is that the replacement x99 FTW board is running excellent with the same Zalman cooler and a 5930k.  The 5960x I sold to a friend, the one that was in the socket when I over tightened the Zalman, is running great.

Here are a couple of much clearer photos that EVGA took when the received my RMA'ed board.

You can see in this one even after blowing with compressed air and a cross county trip the dog hair made it all the to Cali from Chi;
