BTC price point will change (to lower) with latest generation of ASIC. Antminer S3 453gh/s @ ~500w. Calculate the "new" breakeven price point before you set yr target BTC buying price.

the newer revisions S3 antminers are 340w, I too thought they were 500 - 600w but I guess that was older models. I'm still gonna start with a S1 though just cause they are cheaper to buy, will get a S3 when they come down i price, $450 a little too much to spend for me right now, the S1 I can get for $140 I would be happy if I could just make $100 a month or more, right now I can't even do that with my GPU's, I'm lucky to get $50 a month.

yep true, if I did decide to buy an S3 antminer, and as long as I can run it long enough to pay itself off, I will break even and then profit will roll in.

So, new gtx 980 runs into all sorts of problems folding, so while I waited for Stanford to find a fix I look into mining for fun. And bit-coin prices drop. Think I'm bad luck . Have free electric up to a monthly *cap* so figured why not look into crypto as I already have the hardware and some free electricity. Just waiting to see what the cap is on the bill, seems like its a well guarded secret around here. EDIT: I know this is a bit off topic, but I've have some real problems getting cudaminer to work, but I am under the impression that mining scrypt, scrypt-n and the one that starts with a K(can't remember it) aren't more profitable then the x11/13/15/nist5 and will almost never be because of asics. Is this correct?

well it says 2000 GH/s at 0.69w per GH, so that comes out to 1380 watts For comparison, 4 x S3 antminers together will come to 1760 GH/s and 1360 watts so yea the S4 is just a bit better on energy efficency vs hashrate.

Its good I'm using MinerControl v1.2 (Nice Hash Controls new name) with ccMiner as well, didn't take me to long to set up. I actually know some C# so I just looked though the source code when I had a question. cudaminer just doesn't want to work, nothing to do with MinerControl. Not really interested in getting things like antminers until I understand everything a little more. Don't want to be losing money. Once I finish my degree I do plan to build up a dedicated folding/mining rig however. How long do those antminers take to pay themselves off anyway?

depends on the difficulty and market price so thier is no true answer for how long it will take to pay off I did an estimate though and a single S3 antminer only pulls in around $60 a month and uses around $10 a month for each on power usage so still making $50 a month profit, the S3 antminer is selling for $270 right now so it will take just over 5 months to pay it off currently. These numbers will of course change when difficulty and market price changes. As for Miner Control, I chose not to use that because it splits up your bitcoin income to multiple pools, I chose to stay on NiceHashControl so I can have all my Bitcoin income on 1 pool. and like I said above don't bother with setting up cudaminer cause scrypt isn't profitable anymore anyway.

Yea I may stick with gpu's, its hardware that I'll already have around. Dunno what happened recently but before I was getting like 0.0035 btc net and now its down to 0.002. Maybe because the price is going back up. I'm just using this as something to do so my hardware doesn't sit idle, I have this though that if I'm going to buy higher end hardware it needs to always be doing something. Folding to help science, mining to possibly provide a little passive income or gaming with them. You can set-up Miner Control to only use one pool if I'm not mistaken. Haven't tested it personally but you should be able to only list in one pool like below: That being said if what you have works for you no need to change it. { "general": { "power": 0.12, "exchange": 350, "mintime": 5, "maxtime": 180, "switchtime": 5, "deadtime": 10, "logerrors": true, "gridsortmode": 1, "minerkillmode": 1, "traymode": 0, "donationpercentage": 0, "donationfrequency": 240 }, "algorithms": [ { "name": "x11", "hashrate": 7200, "power": 170 }, { "name": "x13", "hashrate": 5950, "power": 170 }, { "name": "x15", "hashrate": 5250, "power": 170 }, { "name": "nist5", "hashrate": 27500, "power": 230 } ], "nicehash": { "account": "XXXXXXXX", "worker": "1", "param1": "-q -r 3 -R 10 -a", "param2": "stratum+tcp://stratum.nicehash.com", "algos": [ { "algo": "x11", "folder": "", "command": "ccminer-50.exe", "arguments": "_PARAM1_ x11 -o _PARAM2_:3336 -u _ACCOUNT_._WORKER_ -p d=0.08" }, { "algo": "x13", "folder": "", "command": "ccminer-50.exe", "arguments": "_PARAM1_ x13 -o _PARAM2_:3337 -u _ACCOUNT_._WORKER_ -p d=0.08" }, { "algo": "x15", "folder": "", "command": "ccminer-50.exe", "arguments": "_PARAM1_ x15 -o _PARAM2_:3340 -u _ACCOUNT_._WORKER_ -p d=0.08" }, { "algo": "nist5", "folder": "", "command": "ccminer-50.exe", "arguments": "_PARAM1_ nist5 -o _PARAM2_:3339 -u _ACCOUNT_._WORKER_ -p d=0.08" } ] } }

thier is miners that use less wattage yes but not for a very good hashrate right now the Antminer S3 is the best choice at the moment.
