So less than 2 weeks ago I picked up an EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB SC from Amazon.

A week after that I got a new 4k monitor, a 28 inch ASUS PB287Q.

I wanted to make the transition into 4k gaming and viewing, and I have to say it looks really, really awesome.

Now that the GTX 980s are coming out though I am wondering if I should return my new graphics card since I'm still within' the return window. I thought the card I got was pretty solid, and that 6 GB would serve me well both in the future and with 4k gaming in general. Is it worth it to upgrade to the 980 do you think? It (currently) only has a 4 GB version.

I just didn't realize this new series of card was going to drop so soon after I bought the last one.

Any thoughts or advice?

I would wait to see if the 980 will be included in the EVGA Step-Up program...which I think it will be. You then only pay the difference (if there is any) and get a brand new 980. That's how I got my 780 from a 680. Great system

Right, but if I do it my way, then I'm not paying anything at all. I'd be returning the other card, which cost me like $600 after tax, and getting all the money back, then using it to buy this new card.

And then I am considering if I should SLI 2 4 GB 980s instead of having one 6 GB 780.

You must not know how the step up program works -look into it, it's awesome. If you can return it without a stocking fee then do it and get a 980

My 780 ti isn't even eligible and still have 64 days left on my 90 day purchase. Even if it was eligible I doubt they would refund you the difference on the upgrade. My guess is you would still end up paying the restocking fee, so while it would be a cheap upgrade, I seriously doubt it would be completely free.

Just to be clear, I bought my current card from Amazon. So if I return it to Amazon, I'm not paying any restocking fee at all, they have great service. I then have 100% of my money back. If I then buy the 980, that is cheaper then what I paid for the 780... so I would be saving money by returning it. The EVGA step up program does not give you money back if the card you're getting is less money than the one you had.

    Thanks though.

Ahh, that makes sense, I tried to do the same at newegg, but it tells me the product is not available for a refund. I think if I did it in the first 14 days I could have, too late now.
