I'm rather curious about folding performance. I don't know extrapolating from GTX750Ti makes sense. 980 has 3.2 times the cores as 750Ti. Even if it improves the TPF to one third, that'd be huge. Comperatively, I think GTX780Ti is about 2-2.5 times better TPF than 750Ti.

Plus, don't forget about the power efficiency...

Can't wait to see :)

My 750ti's net around 30k ppd and my 780Ti's net around 220k ppd when folding the same core17's and project. If they could reduce the power to the level they are saying and get around 240k ppd, that would be great.

Next Gen cards should not be coming out to take the place of existing models at the same price point, we used to get 1.8-2 x the performance of the last gen flag ship in the new one. The 980 is not a 780 or 780ti replacement its the replacement for the 680/770 that is close to the performance of last gen top card give or take 10%. We wont see the next gen replacement for the 780/780ti for some time because AMD is still behind Nvidia at least half a generation.

I feel like i'm the only one excited about these new cards. The performance is in line with what Nvidia said Maxwell would be if these performance figures are accurate. Going from my GTX 570 to a GTX 980 i'm looking at 100% or more increase in performance. If you're coming from a previous GK104 card such as a GTX 680/GTX 770 you'll see a 30-40% bump in performance.

I just hope they dont price the cards too high.

fanboyit reminds me of the 260/280GTX days when Nvidia refunded some money for over charge of performance...
Don't bring up that "victim of competition" delusional fuzz, those that wanted to be first justified the extra cost and refused to wait for prices to drop; no gun to their heads.  Moreover, they choose to ignore the countless reviews showing that HD4870 was 17% slower than GTX280 for half the cost, only a "take my money" brand loyalist moron that doesn't pay attention to competition would not have seen a price drop coming.  So no, I don't think they deserved a refund.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 final specifications reportedly detailed

Hmm so the 980 is really pretty much 10% faster. But 970 is looks like its only 3% faster than the 770 and 4% faster than the 670. Not really much extra cuda cores with compared to the 770 and 670(remember both have the same cuda cores). I guess the major improvement for the 970 is the extra gig of RAM and a big boost in memory bandwidth.

Then I guess i'll go for 780 Ti SLI with my X99 build....

If you don't have the 780's yet, might as well go for the 980's (or wait for a Ti version).. if you already had 780Ti's I'd likely agree with you not to upgrade for now.

Absolutely agree.  Unless you can get that 780Ti for a bargain basement price.  Hey, you might get lucky!   With the 980's coming soon, many owners (like I had done for the last 8 years:) will be dumping our cards for the latest and greatest.  I'm sitting this iteration out, because it really doesn't offer much for me as a Titan(s) owner.  I decided to upgrade my 3930k to a 5930k which was still quite costly.

Well that isn/t correct as GTX 670 & GTX 770 go

Tthe GTX 680 has 1536 Kepler CUDA Cores as does the GTX 770 only diffs are the New Revision GPGPU  GK104-400-A2 for GTX 680 and GK104-425-B1 for GTX 770 the GTX 770 also has 7Ghz QDR ram over the 6Ghz ram of the GTX 680 for the rest pretty much the same , a GTX 670 has 1344 Kepler CUDA Cores, thus being not the same amount as a GTX 770

they are expecting it to go over 2.3GHZ

it should be able to Overclock to 1.5-1.6 on Air - stock cooling

Armed with liquid nitrogen, the newest EVGA hardware together with an EVGA X99 FTW motherboard, 1600W energy provides and an EVGA GeForce GTX 980 operating at over 2050MHz, NNGPI was capable of set new data on 3DMark Fire Strike and Fire Strike Extreme, breaking 19,000 and N,000 barrier in every benchmark.

“The Maxwell GPU within the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 is an overclocking monster,” stated Vince “RNGPI” Lucido. “There is a ton of headroom on the GPU and Memory clocks, and efficiency scaling is a number of the highest I have ever seen. Internally we've got hit the very best clocks ever achieved on a GPU.”
“The energy effectivity of the brand new GPUs permit for larger overclocking with decrease energy consumption, even on air cooling,” stated Illya “TiN” Tsemenko. “The incontrovertible fact that it isn't so demanding on energy consumption, permits you to obtain clockspeeds that weren't attainable earlier than on a reference energy design.”

I apologize in advance is this is off topic and for my lack of knowledge, but I am curious as to why people are going for the 970 FTW over the 980 SC ACX 2.0?  I have read a few threads and seems like quite a few people want the 970FTW over the 980 SC ACX 2.0.  From what I understand, the 980 SC ACX 2.0 is the top card.  Am I misunderstanding it?

Thanks!

I just bought a 780ti for a new rig......now this comes out.....Do I wait? Should I return the 780ti and get the 980? I paid $700 dollars for it so that $150 would help out a lot with other parts. Any ideas fellas?

I say, nuklear, to send it back and get a refund.. But! Expect that the 980 could possibly be sold out for a while. The proficiency of the 980 will pay off. Heck, K|ngp|n and T|n were pushing one at just over 2ghz on ln2 at the game24 event... They are great looking cards so far.

I'm going for a monster rig so money isn't the issue. As long as the 980 is better in every way than the 780ti then I'll wait a bit for it.

Given that that would require the 980 to NOT be the full GM204 chip, they won't.

Maybe when GM200/GM210 parts come out there will be a chance of a Ti edition. Depends on AMD of course.

Local Micro Center only had these left... I'm in heaven right now though, the performance difference from my 570 is just night and day.

MSI GTX980 Gaming is better than my too and she have 50MHz less clock than GTX980 SC ACX 2.0
For 560-570$ customer get really nice performance, K|NGP|N Classified is completely different card than reference GTX780Ti.

In the old days when a new product came you might have had 20-50% performance increase over previous model.
So look at it this way if you made $1 an hour and got a 50% raise you now make $1.50 an hour. Now lets say you make $10 an hour and you get a 10% raise that puts you at $11 an hour.
Smaller percent increase, but still numbers wise twice as much more.

I'll stick to my 780ti classified. Nvidia will have to offer an actually performance increase for me to jump on the bandwagon. I'll wait for their next card, maybe. I have been disgruntled with Nvidia lately and await a solid offering from AMD... However, AMD has slumped bad lately.

I think he left the field and is past the parking lot by now.

Hahahah. Every time there is a thread about the new impending nvidia card everyone says they are going to wait for the NEXT one coming right after it. Sadly it reminds me of Apple sauce users...
