Hi!

I need opinions of what is better for gaming using stock clocks. First the info about processors (correct me if I'm wrong!).
The 3930k has 6 cores running at 3.2Ghz and uses Sandy Bridge E architecture. This cpu has boost clocks of 3/3/4/5/6/6 (6 cores 3.5Ghz, 4 cores 3.6Ghz, 2 cores 3.8Ghz). This CPU has a TDP of 130W.
The 4770T has 4 cores running at 2.5Ghz and uses Haskwell architecture. This cpu has boost clocks of 6/9/11/12 (4 cores 3.1Ghz, 2 cores 3.6Ghz). This CPU has a TDP of 45W.

If we count that Haskwell architecture is about 15% more powerfull clock for clock than Sandy Bridge, the default clock of the 4770T is about 2.875GHz (2.5 + (2.5 * 0.15)). The new boost clocks are 3.565GHz using 4 cores and 4.14GHz using only 2 cores.

Usually, actual games use 4 or 2 cores, so can a 4770T match a 3930K in games?

I have this question because I have the two CPUs in diferent computers and if they can match I'm planning to sell the 3930k and its mobo and build a gaming/folding machine using my current AMD GPU for gaming and some GTX750Ti for folding the rest of time, having the computer up 24/7 using a passive cooler on the 4770T.

Do you think is possible?

Thanks for all!

3930k max turbo frequency is 3.8GHz.
4770T max turbo frequency is 3.7GHz.

My vote goes to the 4770T since it's 15% faster clock for clock than sandy bridge.

Isn't it a much better choice to go with the 3930K, as it is an LGA2011 CPU?
The disadvantages of that would be using a more expensive chipset, a more expensive CPU and more expensive DDR4 RAM?

Although the benefits may not be visible at this time, if you have the money I would go with the LGA2011 purely for the DDR4 RAM.
Clock speed isn't everything though, see if you can find the benchmark results for them both - as I would assume the 3930K may be working harder per cycle.

3930K and the X79 platform use DDR3 not DDR4 RAM.  To use DDR4 RAM, you need to go with the X99 chipset and corresponding socket 2011-3 CPUs.  5820K, 5930K, or 5960X would be the corresponding CPUs for X99.

For purely gaming performance at stock clocks, I would say the performance difference would be marginal between the two.  Maybe 5-10% if that.

I will give the 4770T a try. I plan to fold 24/7 using 2 x GTX 750Ti cards and be able to play my games at the same time using my main card (R9 290x) when I'm in home. I want to use the AMD card only for gaming because its insane power consumption.
When I'm at work, I will put the CPU folding along with the 750s.

    Thanks for all!
