I will soon be obtaining the last piece of the puzzle - an i7 :)
My new motherboard has a few blue elements on it, opposed to the AMD red I currently have, and I was hoping to make some subtle changes such as blue sata cables, a few blue fans or blue led fans, blue leds maybe.
The case I am currently using is an XGBOX Dragon II, and I was hoping to get something which meets the following criteria:
  • Black case
  • Blue accents or no additional colour at all
  • Window (optional)
  • Supports ATX (optional for EATX for next project)
  • A decent amount of space for rear cable management, so I can actually take off the side panel and reattach without using my knees and elbows to put it on... :s
  • intended for air cooled systems
  • Tool-less HDD bays (optional)
  • HDD to sit 90 degrees so that the connectors are on the sides.
Would anybody have any suggestions, or am I being too picky for my own good?
I was eyeing off a case built for liquid cooling, and it weighed in at 16kg - but I don't actually know if this is suitable to my needs. It sure looked nice with all of those section covers :)
That case was the "Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Black"

Lian-Li PC-A75 or PC-A76.  Build quality is unrivaled for the price, and they're built better than most $300+ cases too.  Good cable management, tool-free design, great airflow design (wind tunnel), low noise, HDD direction seems to be the way you desire unless I'm mistaken.  Easily fits E-ATX.  There are windowed versions of these, called the PC-A75WX and PC-A76WX.

If the (lovely looking) Lian Li's are too pricey (£200), I suppose another option would be the Fractal Design Define R4 (ATX) or XL (E-ATX).  Build quality is acceptable-to-good* (there's a small amount of flex if you poke the panels firmly), very quiet, black with white drive trays, 6 140mm fan mounts, available with or without window, and about 35% of the cost of the Lian-Li ones (about £70).

    * In terms of build quality, I'm spoilt by my current WaveMaster case, which is 1mm+ aluminium.

If your going for a more understated, professional looking quality built case than you cant go wrong with the Lian-Li's, although I will tell you upfront that I am biased toward the Lian-li lines. :)  They have a whole heap of extra case parts you can play with too, not just replacement parts. The build quality is crazy good and they use thick aluminum panels on the higher end models. I haven't actually had a lower end, 100.00 or less, lian-li to play with so I cant speak for the cheaper cases though. Im sure the quality is there though. If your more into modding and want more flexibility you may want to look into Caselabs or Mountain Mods cases.

Interesting case choice. I'd never justify spending $400 on a computer case but to each his own.

Excellent choice.  Not the friendliest price but that's one of the best full towers available.

It's about $300 USD, but Australia gets worse prices for computer parts it would seem.

ahh, well even @ 300 that's a bit steep for me. I guess as I've gotten older my tastes have changed. I remember wanting the LED lights or the crazy case, now I'm just happy with a subtle/sleek looking case.  I think $100-150 max is where  I'd stay on buying a case. I'm not knocking his choice its definitely got a ton of features but no way.

That's a great case!!! For what your getting the price is decent. All heavy aluminum, 3 hot swap alum HDD cages, great removeable mobo tray, filters, a TON of extra hardware, rubber vibration dampening for fans, etc.... Being it Aus he's getting hit a little on the price but that's expected there unfortunately. This is a home , not a case. Hell never have to buy another case.

That's what I've moved my intentions to - I initially wanted the wow factor. I might still colour code the inside minus the lights, but this one's solid, great scalability, it will fit a massive evga mobo when I upgrade eventually, the motherboard tray even comes out so when I upgrade I can show my kids (when I have them and they're old enough) how to build computers correctly. It will increase the value of my system and secure it in my household despite whatever the wife may throw at me for the rest of my life :)

It looks like it has some incredible space for cable management at the rear also :)

Might be another 8 weeks before I can get this with all the coloured components and some better ram, but I can wait :)
I also will be posting the rig with photos on the forums here when the time comes. I want to integrate myself in a technology network and EVGA has no comparrison for quality, appearance and performance so it'll be a great start to my online presence here :)
I'll be getting a Devil's Canyon i7 next week, from there I need to start saving again!

I'm building a new system around the evga x99 mobo, i7 5820k, 2 gtx 970 gpu, corsair 850 watt psu, 4 sticks 4gb corsair ram.  I will be air cooling it.

I used the HAF 932 the last time.  The case is fine, but the I/0 panel and usb bracket quickly fell apart.  These parts are ALWAYS out of stock at the Cooler Master store, so I will not be buying CM again, unless you can recommend a case you've had success with.

What case should I buy?  I want to invest in long-term equipment.  Unlike the other guy, I don't want to pay a fortune --- no more than $150.  My full tower case is so big... Can I get by with a mid tower?  I would love to get the corsair vengeance 2 x 8gb, but their profile is insanely high, and I want to wait for ddr4  to come down in price.  Hopefully that will happen.

I've looked at all of the cases recommended here.... mini cases are out.  i would kill for the wavemaster.... grats to you for snagging this beautiful case.  Aluminum isn't a preference.  I do love da led bling... can't help it ... The solano looks great from that standpoint.  And for all of the crappy accessories on my CM case, the HAF has nice cooling options.

Thank you in advance for your input.

That will be a very nice PC!

CadredI used the HAF 932 the last time.  The case is fine, but the I/0 panel and usb bracket quickly fell apart.

That's a shame.  I had a quick ogle at the Silencio 652 in a shop, and it seemed quite nicely built, but I didn't poke it much...

CadredWhat case should I buy?  I want to invest in long-term equipment.

That's a good way at looking at it - the case is the thing you have to look at every day, and also "protects" the things inside!

CadredMy full tower case is so big... Can I get by with a mid tower?

I don't see why not - the Fractal Design Define R4 and Corsair Obsidian 550D are both mid-towers, and are both excellent.  The Corsair Carbide 330R is also supposed to be very good, although from what I've heard, the build quality isn't on a par with the other two.  The only downsides I can see with the mid-towers are you don't have so many optical drive bays (2 should be enough, though), and you have to choose between lots of internal drives and airflow (my R4 supports 7 HDDs, but I removed the top 4 bays to get unobstructed flow from the upper intake fan), which probably won't be a problem.

CadredI would love to get the corsair vengeance 2 x 8gb, but their profile is insanely high, and I want to wait for ddr4  to come down in price.  Hopefully that will happen.

I have Corsair's Vengeance Pro DDR3 in my current PC, and whilst it's true they're quite tall, if you get a slimline CPU cooler like the Noctua NH-U12S, it they won't be a problem (in my case, the sticks are about 1cm in front of the front of the fan, and stuck up about 1-1.5cm above the bottom of the fan).  Obviously, going X99, you can't use DDR3, and Corsair's DDR4 is all pretty low-profile, so not something to worry about.

I think the DDR4 prices are dropping - Corsair's 2666MHz has dropped from £280 at launch to £210 (for 16GB), and Crucial's 2133/2400MHz RAM can be had for £150/180 for the same amount (in comparison, 16GB CL9 1866MHz Vengeance Pro DDR3 is around £130).

Cadredi would kill for the wavemaster.... grats to you for snagging this beautiful case.  Aluminum isn't a preference.

It is a beautifully constructed case, and is lovely to look at.  Unfortunately, the ventilation is not great - 2x 80mm intake and 1x 80mm exhaust isn't great, and it also comes from a time before cable-management.

CadredI do love da led bling... can't help it ... The solano looks great from that standpoint.

I've used the Fractal Design Define R4 on two builds, and it's a very competent case - the metal could do with being a little thicker on the bottom, but it's well built, quiet, and has good cooling (my PC has 3x 140mm intakes & 1 exhaust, and is near-silent with them running at 7V - you can actually fit 7 140mm fans onto it if you want).  The fan controller's useful, too (I prefer a constant noise level, rather than fans ramping up and down).  It's quite understated, though, so maybe not to your taste, although they do a windowed version.

The Corsair 330R Titanium edition looks nicely designed, and pretty in an understated way due to the brushed aluminium door.  I'm sure it or the 550D would be great (although I'd pull the front fan(s) out and add 2 Noctua NF-P12's (not S12's!) on a low-noise adaptor for better airflow and a nice acoustic signature).  I've not seen any reviews on them, but Be Quiet!'s Silent Base 800 series looks a bit like the Corsair Graphite 600T, and could be quite nice (their stuff normally gets good reviews).  Not very "shiny" though.

Dunno if any of those suggestions are your taste or not?  Good luck with your new build!

P.S. If you don't like Noctua's "butterscotch" colour scheme, Be Quiet's Silent Wings 2 fluid-dynamic bearing fans are supposed to be very good, and are black, but are nearly as expensive.  Noctua do a "Redux" range in black and grey, but their S12 120mm fans aren't suitable for use as intakes on cases with tight mesh, and the P12's (which are) aren't in the Redux range.

Well that's just typical - I bought my R4 about a week before that case was released.   It does look great - full length underside dust filter removable from the front, switchable front door hinges (I prefer hinges on the right, the R4 is left-hinge only), a more open HDD case design, Corsair 550D-style optional fan mount covers, and latching side panels are all welcome improvements (pretty-much all of my complaints/criticisms of the R4 appear to have been addressed).  I wish it had a split power/HDD led, instead of a single one, though.  It is a bit more expensive than the R4 (£70 vs £85), but yeah, just buy it...
