I have a EVGA E-173 750i SLI motherboard that needs cleaning. I need to remove both the MCP and SPP heatsinks and fans to clean the dust that's packed into the fans and fins and re-apply some fresh TIM. Does anyone know exactly how to do this so I don't destroy the plastic pins that secure the heatsinks to the motherboard? Thanks for your help.

On the back side, squeeze the "arrow tips" on the tips of the pins with a pliers.  With the tips compressed, the pin will push straight through.  There isn't really any trick.  I haven't broken any, but I never tried with a really old board like yours where the pins have been heat soaked for many years.  If you break a pin, you can always put a spring and screw in its place.

The tips are still soft and pliable but wouldn't push through and is why I asked. I think the pins need to be pulled out before the tips can be pressed together enough to be removed. I will get a better look when I remove the board later today which I really didn't want to do. I get the impression that the heatsink is held on by the 'flange' and then the pin is pushed through and locked in place to keep the sides from collapsing and letting the heatsink fall out. I will let you know how things work out.

You're right. After I got the motherboard out I was able to rotate the pins and squeeze the tabs with pliers. Thanks.
