I am thinking about using an M2 SSD for the boot drive and for games of my new build.  I am going to use the ASUS (sorry EVGA) X99 Rampage Extreme V motherboard with an 5930 CPU, Corsair Dominator 2800 DDR4 RAM and my two EVGA 780 Ti's in SLI.

I don't know very much about M2s but I am learning more each day.  Before I pull the trigger and order one, I thought I would ask what you all think.  I am afraid of what I don't know that I don't know. I am primarily looking to build a gaming rig and want something in either 256 or better yet, 512GB.

This is what I am considering but I have seen some others at lower prices but I know that the Samsung is compatible with the ASUS board.

Here is an alternative:

The other thought I had was to go with an Samsung 850 Pro.

So I would appreciate your opinions and any pros and cons you may think of.

I am also ditching my Corsair AX1200 and replacing it with an EVGA P2 1200.

Everything will go into a new Case Labs Merlin case.  Windows 7 Pro (Waiting for Windows 9)
So please feel free to give me your opinions whatever they may be.

Thanks.

I think an M.2 is great. They are expensive, but if you can afford one and it fits in your system I say go for it.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

I can afford it.  My aunt passed away a couple of months ago and left me some money.  I eventually will get into folding in her memory.

well as you already make use of SSD's, I don't think you will see much of a difference using the M.2.
surely there will be some but it won't be measurable in any way, maybe booting windows 1sec faster!?
thus I don't find any reason justifying the expenses no matter that you can afford them.
additionally already having the AX1200 it makes no sense to switch to P2 1200.
there is just no point to change working X part for a Y part unless there is a measurable significant difference.

I appreciate your thoughts.  The reason I am replacing my AX1200 with the EVGA Ps1200 is reliability. This is the third AX1200 I have had in two years.  I am fed up with Corsair.  I will still use their RAM but after the Link debacle and both my HX1000 failing and my AX1200 failing twice, I need a PSU that I can count on.  This is why I am switching.  I thought about going to a G2 1300 or even the G2 1600 but I like the eco mode on the P2 1200.

I have two pretty old SSD's so I am looking to upgrade regardless of whether I go to an M2 or not.  At the very least I will get a new Samsung 850 pro. So my decision is whether I go M2 or 850 pro at this point. I will kweep my old SSD's for storage, perhaps in a RAID.

I am not spending money just for the sake of doing so.  If that were the case, I wouldn't be soliciting opinions here.  I am trying to put together a powerful, solid build that will last me a couple of years as my X58 has done.  I will upgrade my GPUs from time to time but I will like to keep my SSD's, motherboard and CPU for a while.  I may upgrade to a 5960X at some point as well.
