I bought my card five days ago and i have the exactly same problem.
I start render the fans spinning up and you can hear the noise. Its a metallic sound so if anyone says its a coil whine is lie.
Plus my card sometimes rattling in idle state. I have two VGA one for display and this new one to render so most of the time this card is just sitting in my case and wait.

So glad I went with watercooling over air after reading through this. Sorry you had so many issues.

As for the ACX getting rid of coil whine, usually the power supply would help with that. I never heard coil whine until I was running a nearly silent water loop, then it became evident. Definitely a lot different sound than rattling.

As what was said before, a good quick fix would be to place a thin strip of whatever between the fins at that particular location to prevent the rattling noise. A couple strips of electrical tape would probably be perfect for the job. Though, I completely agree with the OP and everyone else who has had this problem that you shouldn't have to do these things when you are purchasing a $500+ GPU (or any GPU for that matter). The good thing is, now that you have posted your video of the exact problem, now everyone knows why it is rattling in the first place. And hopefully the video gets passed to EVGA so that they can fix it...

In the end, I'm glad you finally got an ACX cooler with fixed fins.

I may be facing this issue as well. EVGA can keep sending me cards though, I have no intention to rip off the cooler.

Yeah, I am buying only reference cards from now on. I went through the rattling cooler issue on ACX as well. I just took them back to the store I bought them from though.

This problem is very common!! I just sold a 780 ti acx which had it (managed to fix it with thermal tape). I'm now running 780 Classy SLI. One of them you can tell has the fins close to the connectors loose. Both rattle and some points. I guess we have to live with it. Amazing cards otherwise.

Yeah, hopefully EVGA fixes this issue with the 900 series... Probably not, as they still have yet to even admit to it.

Yep, crossing fingers that if I step up pretty soon, the problem is non-existent in the GTX 970/980.

I had a similar problem, but it was caused by me (I think some other people should fess up). With the fans running full blast, I was fooling around in my case and brushed up against the blades by mistake. I didn't realize they were so vulnerable. The fan noise and vibrations started immediately. I saw earlier this year that EVGA was selling ACX coolers, but at the time I investigated, they were sold out.

Intel i7 3930k @ 4.3 Ghz / Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 2 x EVGA GTX 980 Ti SC  /  32 gb Gskill Ripjaws RAM / 256 gb Vertex 4 SSD / Corsair AX1200i / Corsair H110i GT

It could happen. In my case the second Classy already came like this. Some of the fins close to where the Pin connectors go are very very flimsy. I'm not sure if the sound comes from there though. Either way. Since i'm running SLI, the sound of all the fans kind of muffle the rattle.

Either way, i think the quality leaves a lot to be desired. This shouldn't be happening in the first place.

Other than that i don't think there's anything to complain about this excellent videocards

ACX Cooler FTL!

Im surprised we havent seen a higher QC GPU HSF, no taller than a dual slot. Two high static, say 15mmx120mm fans. Heck, MSI's been doing this for years, too bad thay dont offer it for after market.

With all due respect, there's nothing to "fess up" to here for the specific issue we're talking about here with loose fins on the cooler. If you actually read through the entirety of this post, you'll see that the issue at hand is not user-induced, and is the exact same *reproducible* issue narrowed down to loose fins that's out of our control. We're not talking noisy fans themselves, nor are we having noise issues from any wrongdoing on our part; It's simply how they behave.  If you had a similar issue that you admit you caused, fine, but it doesn't mean that the rest of us here are in the same boat. Saying that we have something to "fess up" to is simple victim-blaming, for lack of a better term, in this situation.

I never understand why some people always side with the company when an issue is being reported about a product. It's impossible that i have caused this problem to two different videocards. It's too much of a coincidence that many users have reported a similar problem (there are many threads about it).

I know i can fix the problem with thermal adhesive tape. I just don't want to go through the hassle of opening my new videocard, cleaning the old TIM, taping the fins with adhesive tape, reapplying TIM and hoping the noise is gone.

This problem is making me consider moving my case to the floor (currently it stands next to me on my desk).

I have been lucky that my fins didn't rattle on any of the cards I bought. I have even sent one of them off to Australia to replace another person faulty cooler. Hopefully EVGA will revise the manufacturing process and beef up the fins and making them tighter.

EVGA ACX 2.0 Teaser: http://youtu.be/0b2ln09-Eu8

They need to show the actual cooler in detail. Hopefully they have addressed the rattling that people are experiencing.

I tried the tape fix as was suggested on another thread. It worked for a few days but after a valley benchmark the card began rattling again( must have loosened the fins) I had enough at that stage and returned it for a direct cuii. Received it today and so far I've had no issues with rattling or anything else. It also runs quieter at idle as far as I can tell. I'm happy I exchanged it, I personally couldn't be bothered dealing with the hassle of returning 4 cards to get a non defective one. Glad to hear you finally received one that works šŸ˜€
