hi guys,
i run an 141-BL-E757, REV:1.0 ( manufactured after 18.august 2005 ) with bios version 6PG ( thats what cpu-z is telling me... ) 6 x 2gb corsair dominator's and an xeon e5520 cpu.
before i run an i7-970 and i7-980 cpu on it...

this all without any making any changes, like a mod or something.

now i see on ebay, that a 6 core xeon x5670 is very cheap available on ebay. i orefer a six core cpu because i need a bit more power.

cpu-upgrade dot com is telling me (  ) , that the cpu is supported by the board, but i read also, that some guys here have to modificate there boards to run a xeon cpu.

so my question is, is it worth to buy a xeon x5670 and try to run without mod on the e757 ?

i include a screenshot of cpu-z because of the bios version...

thanks in advance !

I personally just built my new gaming rig(first one!), currently using a classified 3 sli E760 with an Intel Xeon X5670 clocked at 4.0(so it can be done).  I can't say definitively that a mod would be necessary for you're particular board.  However, EVGA modded my board for me  just by be me inquiring if they could do so to allow Westmere support.  I did so after having probably read some of the same articles and forums you may have read,  and this was back in May.  I didn't send the board in for RMA until probably early or mid July? and received it back within 5 days!  It was out of warranty though as it was purchased second hand.  But yeah, all I had to do was pay for shipping one way which from my location to EVGA cost me approximately $33.00.  So in full the mod cost me $33.00 dollars which I'd gladly pay any-day for this board! as I'm not good at all with soldering.  I hope this helps?  I'd definitely have EVGA due it as they'll extensively test your board there at their facility prior to shipping it back to you.  This worked perfectly for me as I had NO way to test the board since purchase as I had to save up for each individual part first.

so far so good, doesnt support the "classified" nativly support that xeon ?

if i will ship it to EVGA, it will take some weeks maybe, because i live in germany... :(

after reading some other post's, the problem is the "westmere" core, but why a 32nm i7-980 was working on the board, isnt it also a "westmere" core cpu ?

Only the rev 2 classifies support it out of the box I believe, the early x58's needed the mod but I don't know about that specific board ether. Problem with the xeons is not that there westmere, its that they have dual QPI links. That being said your current cpu has dual QPI and looks to be running fine, so there's a chance you don't need to do any mods. I say just call up evga and ask them.

i warm the thread up again guys...
after some mails between support and me, there is just a chance to get the xeon x56xx cpu's runing, WITH a modification...unfourtanly, the board is used, have no sticker anywhere, so no registering possible, no mod to get from support...

secondly, i believed some guys in an german hardware forum, who wrote that EVERY x58 board should pass the test with an xeon x56xx cpu...so i ordered a x5650, because there everybody was meaning it MUST ( one of them wrote, he use exactly the same board as mine, and it works fine without anything )...

well, it was never function...

I have the exact same board with the same bios version and I also ordered a X5650 a little while ago.
Here's the mods that you may need to do to get the xeon to work (first pic is around the north bridge & the second pic is above the cpu socket):  http://forums.evga.com/Do-I-need-to-mod-my-X58-SLI-LE-Rev-10-to-accept-Xeons-m2204216.aspx

When mine arrives i'll let you know if it works without the mods.

wooow, got an really cheap E760, rev 1.1 which should work with the 6 core westmere's, so no need to modify my E757... ;)
