Idk, seems kinda pointless as i thought most of them could just be turned off... or never turned on in the first place.

I would *think* turning them off or never turning them on would end in them being reprimanded for misuse of equipment. For the protection of the police and the citizens, I believe it is a good idea for them to wear them, since every poop for brain loves to record and share everything bad, but won't show the full video where the police may be getting mistreated.

A good example is the video where "police shot man 6 times for running from the bus without paying" a few weeks back. The video starts a few minutes after the headline with everyone screaming "where is the gun, why'd you shoot?" If there had been more footage, there could have been evidence that wasn't disclosed, but we will never know, unless those officers have video from their perspective. They could have removed something that was a threat before every Tom, Dick and Harry whipped out their phone and recorded the aftermath.

Prime example: http://youtu.be/rM4kyiHSY2w shows the man drop the rifle. Cop behind yells gun and shoots... This man was unarmed... What you see in his right hand is the pistol that the cop behind him watches the man pull out of his belt... Without this video, there is no proof that the gun wasn't planted so the cop at the back could freely shoot an innocent person, and that argument was made, until the pistol was spotted in the video... Protect yourself in all ways possible before assuming everyone is good or evil. Video doesn't lie all that often, especially when it is unedited and obtained appropriately.

I think this is like saying that "we trust you, but only to a certain point". Kind of silly really. There is so much social networking going on now that police incidents are shown faster on YouTube then when the police finally get to review the video from those cameras.

That is why they will be important. Rather than showing the bad (everyone else's point of view) is will show everything. This will be important for the prosecution of police that abuse their power and civilians that don't want to admit the truth.

This has been a long time in coming. It is the right thing to do for all of us. It helps keep the honest, honest. And protects us more than word of mouth.

No different than the video recorders in my vehicles. It would shock you how officers change their tactic (Well attitude) when they realize the video is active. They better pick the right car out of the crowd for speeding. Because I have proof it was not me =].

Here is why I am doing this... One day, I did go around a corner to hot. So I should have gotten a ticket for expedition of speed. Now... Officer saw it, was not in his vehicle. A few days later I was going down the same road, but behind a line of cars. I was the third person in line at a red stop light. The light turned green... I saw lights turn on a side street, he pulled me over. He said I was getting a ticket for "Failure" to remain stopped at a stop light. I asked if he was bleeping serious and said how was that possible when two other cars are in front of me. Mind you I never raised my voice, kept my hand on the wheel, and was respectful. He called for backup and told the other officers I threatened him. We went to court. The judge said they trust their officers, and pay the fine, AND go to anger management classes.

If I had video, I would have had this guy in a bad place... Even if that just meant I would not have paid all those years of extra unwarranted insurance premiums for a cops lie it would be worth it. Now, have I deserved other tickets? Yes. But I always paid. This is not an example of them needing to be protected, it is an example of abuse of power.

I look at it like this, The good cops will like always continue to be good while the shady cops that do things under the table will find ways around this entire camera thing and continue to do what they do just like everyone else out there.

You have the 2 types of people. Normally good law abiding type and the fight the man fall through the cracks type

There are videos out there that show whole stories you just have to search for them... Here in NC recently someone was detained for an hour for filming an officer. That officer however was let go..

I personally think it's a good idea for them to wear a camera. It shouldn't have to come down to this, but look where we are at today. People are going to record things, it would be best to be able to show the whole incident. Not just the cherry picked moments to support their agenda/point of view..

This is just like anything else. The cops that have been doing the right thing will now have to deal with more BS because of the actions of another. Isnt this like everything else in life? One person messes up or does something wrong and now we have new laws enforced on the majority for the actions of the minority.

With the way things are going and have gotten to, I dont blame any PD that wants to do this. You get the cops and other persons pov's.

What happened in Ferguson was a gigantic he-said-she-said cluster-you-know-what. Have em all wear cameras. That way no one can make up anything or coach "witnesses" or cops to say something differently than what is shown on the recording.

I actually support this, I wish it were so that all cops would be under water whenever on duty or making a call/stop etc.

This is long over due in my opinion. Police nationwide should be required to wear a camera that records video and audio. If a police officer is on duty or working a side job as security while wearing police uniform, they should be required to wear the same camera setup.

Next step is to train officers not to shoot family pets that look at them the wrong way. Police need to be trained just like the mailman is. We don't see the mailman shooting every dog they come across. That will take local citizens holding the police department accountable.

Police should be required a can of Mace or a dog stick, which is a piece of PVC pipe with a tennis ball on it. My mom has worked as an electric company employee for years, and those were the two things she was authorized. She only Maced a few dogs, and usually just had to swing the PVC pipe in front of her own body to ward off the dogs.

Animal control should be taking care of aggressive dogs, not police... Especially when the dog isn't aggressive.

I think its great and i know more and more police departments are looking at doing it.  Even heard word it might be mandated by the government.  I think the camera should have to be on anytime they are are on the clock.  Considering we pay them through our taxes we should be able to see everything a cop does while earning money we paid them.  Granted i'm not saying livestream it as then you people would be able to monitor where police are to commit crimes but every last bit of their day needs recorded.

NO exceptions realy, always on is always on. They should not be allowed to turn it off for any reason. Let em turn it off on a piss break and it will be off all the time.... Cop shoots an unarmed kid (example here) camera is off but he plants a gun... "Oops, I must have left it off when I took a leak...."

I couldn't agree more. NJ/NY/PA should adopt this statewide NOW cause the biggest scumbags in LE work here. I currently work with a sheriff's dept, corrections everyday and I used to do some sidework with some municipal guys that if you heard the things they said and did you guys would probably be pretty appalled.

Re: Ferguson Police now wear body cameras!!!! 2014/09/03 18:04:19 (permalink)
While this is a good thing, the problem is the video won't be released for public knowledge and review.  Only as evidence against the accused.  That is where the line is drawn for video recording.  You have public video recording that can be pretty open, if left unedited, for all to see (YouTube as such) and then there is private video recording that can be labeled as 'Property of PD'.  When video is recorded by the PD, they don't have to release any video, if it has been recorded unless stated by law.  Kind of an issue here in Oklahoma for dash cam video.  City police are to release video upon request, but the Highway Patrol does not have to release any video, even if requested because of an exemption in that law rule.

I still find public recordings to be the best piece of evidence.  The personal PD cams will also help to rule if that course of action was justified.

On a side note, since I was reviewing police brutality yesterday.  I find most of the time that the officers in those situations do not know when to back down or away.  They always seem to be pushing the person to a lower level than themselves.  And that right there is the cause for most people as they go into their 'fight or flight' stance.  I do understand the officer needs to stand firm in any situation, but giving a person a little breathing room can make all the difference in their attitude.

THIS is why Body cameras are being issued.  Watch the news report and then watch the full length footage.  Yes, the police report shows a main portion of the conversation, but the second one is uncut and shows just why these body cameras are so important.

I have to agree that this would be a great idea. The unfortunate thing is that society as a whole is untrustworthy. A real shame, give that a man's word meant something, but today it is not worth the salt in his sweaty brow.
