My 7 year old HP Pavilion d4990y destroyed its video card (I think the fan went bad and it cooked the processor. I replaced it with an EVGA GeForce 8400 GS. The system had an 8400 GS video card, so I replaced it with the same model card. There was a connector on the old video card (2-wire), but no place to plug it in on the new card. the connector was connected to a similar connector on the motherboard, so I just left it unconnected. The only problem so far is that the sound volume on my system has dropped significantly.

Two questions:
  1. Could the two wire connection have anything to do with my sound issue?
  2. Is there another video card I should have considered? I am not a gamer, have no need or space for two monitors and I can access the full 4MB of memory (I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit.)
The system is old (I know,) but it has a Core2 Quad processor, a RAID 0 disk setup (800MB) and I have three external WD disk drives: 2 1TB and 1 2TB. As long as it still works, I can't see getting rid of it.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Welcome to the forums..An 8400 GS comes in different flavors, with or without an on-card HD Audio controller..The ones without an on-card HD Audio controller need/use a small 2-wire SPDIF pass-through cable which passes audio from the motherboard to the card's DVI output..To get audio from this kind of card, you need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter (or cable) and the SPDIF pass-through cable connected.

The ones with an on-card HD Audio controller like the 8400 GS (with HDMI) do not need/use the SPDIF pass-through cable..To get audio from this kind, you need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter (or cable), or just use the HDMI.

Here is some info about HDMI Audio, SPDIF and configuring audio settings in Windows and NVIDIA Control Panel, among other things, that might help you get it straightened out.

Really need more info for ppl to be of more help..Exactly what kind of speaker/sound setup are you trying to use, and what operating system do you have?

I am using the speakers built-in to my HP W2007 monitor using the DVI input, and I am running Windows 8.1 Pro. Sorry for not including that info.

Some motherboards automatically disable the onboard audio when another audio device (such as a graphics card with an HD Audio controller) is detected and you would need to go into the BIOS and enable it again if you're using the onboard audio connection shown here in Figure 6 (is that what you're doing?)..Similar to Win7 (Win8/8.1 prolly a little different), you need to go into Control Panel -> Sound or right-click on the speaker icon in the System Tray and select your Playback device..If you're using audio software (like Realtek HD Audio Manager), you may need to check and configure settings properly there too.

Re: Replacement for GeForce 8400 GS 2014/09/01 10:41:15 (permalink)
Yes, I am using the DVI ouput from the card into the DVI input to the monitor. If I understand correctly, I have to get a DVI to HDMI adapter but keep the A/V connected even though I am using HDMI. Is this correct?

I am here sitting and trying to visualize the connection. I have a DVI/DVI cable from the computer to the monitor. I also have an HDMI output on the video card. What I need to do is run an HDMI cable to the monitor with a female connector for the HDMI and a female DVI connector. Where do I get the audio? I have a single audio input on the monitor which is a stereo connector in a single cable. Hope this is right. BTW what do I do wih the 2-wire cable that was attached to the old video card, and is still attached to the motherboard?

Ah, now I see that HP W2007 monitor doesn't have HDMI (was looking at one of HP's famous "one size fits all" setup guides before)..So, use the sound cable with green connectors that should have came with the monitor (if not, go buy one) and connect it to your motherboard's green audio out jack (HP Pavilion d4990y Getting Started Guide) and the monitor's audio in jack..Make sure HD Audio is enabled in the BIOS..Go to Windows sound and set Playback to Speakers as default..And like I said if you have any sound software like Realtek HD Audio Manager you may need to make sure the Speaker Configuration (stereo) is set right there too..You can remove that 2-wire SPDIF cable from your mobo and archive it somewhere.

Looks like I am going to have to get a new monitor with HDMI input. Any suggestions? I have limited desk space so can't handle much more than 20" monitor. HP has a 21.5" and that's about the limit for me. Again, thanks for your help.

You don't have to get a monitor with HDMI, run the sound/audio cable from your current monitor to the mobo and set everything up to use that..That's what I would do..Shouldn't be a problem.
