I build a new pc and I have been crashing to desktop from games. I will get 3-6 sec black screens on games also. I have run memtest86 and that came out with no errors. GPU 27-79 CPU (27-61) after in game for 15 minutes on High settings. I have made sure to update my drivers and bios so now I think it might be due to the fact that the card is overclocked? I read I could try turning the card down but I am not sure how to do that or if its a good option. I am just looking for help on how to address this issue so I know what I need to update/buy/configure.

Thanks!

I would uninstall the graphics driver and the optional driver components by doing a Custom (Advanced) clean install and then install the latest driver and choosing only to install PhysX along with the Graphics Driver..Uninstall EVGA PrecisionX, MSI Afterburner or similar graphics utilities you might have first and choose not to save settings when prompted and don't reinstall for now, try without.

Are you using the HDMI, DisplayPort or DVI?..Try a different output from the GTX 660?

You can use EVGA Precision X or MSI Afterburner "turn down" the Core Clock as far as possible and see if that helps any.

Would be a good idea to update to the latest BIOS and drivers for your mobo if needed from MSI.

    Just a few thoughts here.

    Thanks for the reply!

I did a clean install of the graphics drivers with driver cleaner pro 15 and so far what little I have been able to play has worked.
I am using HDMI cable. I have updated the BIOS and drivers but I will double check them.

I have MSI Afterburner and I'll try that next if I still crash on games. I can turn it down by 105 MHz

I turned the core clock down as low as it would go and in game it would still flash black and crash me. I guess I am going to try re installing windows nothing I am trying is working.

If it is still crashing with the core turned down I would recommend an RMA

What is the minimum power requirement for a 660, because a 550w bronze is NOT a strong power supply and could be helping cause the issue. Will be back after seeing if I can find the minimum requirement.

Minimum is 450w, so you are above the minimum, but with a bronze rating, you are losing a lot of your headroom as well. That could be a part of the issue. I am doubting that you have a spare or stronger power supply lying around, do you?

RMA means Return Merchandise Authorization, it's where you get the product replaced, if it's under warranty. If you could call EVGA Tech support at 888-881-EVGA (3842) or send an email to support@evga.com and give us the serial number of the card, we can check its warranty status and see what we can do to help.

    Thank you for the reply
I'll see if I can turn a stronger power supply up. I plugged straight into the wall instead of a power strip so that might help?

I am going to monitor my Power Limit, Voltage Limit and OV max limit while I play a game and see what happens.

*It appears my voltage limit and power limits are being met! I just played Planet Side 2 for a few minutes (no issues occurred)

So to solve my problem I can A) Buy a higher watt power supply or B) Turn down Core Voltage (mV) (Can this be done safely?)
