I still have my x58 paired with my good old i7-930 clocked at 4.2 and it is still pretty strong. All I do is gaming, but lately I'm getting kinda exited with all that X99 Haswell-E stuff coming next month... I kept postponing my CPU/Mobo upgrade when Ivy and Haswell came around and here I am, asking myself the same very question, Will this be worthy replacement for my X58/930... I need you guys to help me decide here... If I were to upgrade this time, it would be the x99 paired with an i7-5820 which is an entry level 6 core that is coming this September. I game at 2560x1440 with pair of my 3GB 580's in SLI. Games I play are: PlanetSide 2, soon to be StarCitizen (can't wait for that thing), Arma2/3, DayZSA, stuff like that... I am also kinda thinking about upcoming Maxwell, may be two 880's... My main dilemma here is, should I give up my x58/930 and go with x99/5820? Thanks in advance :)

Why not give it a few months, so the kinks get worked out, and then go for it. It sounds like it will be a great upgrade and a fun new build.

Well personally I'm waiting till some solid comparisons come out. I'm still rocking i7-920 with the x58 ftw so I know how it feels. I don't know if you have the later revision e758, but if you do you can always drop an xeon x5650 hex core in, there going for like $70 on ebay right now as companies are recycling servers and selling them off. Even if you have 1.0 its a small mod if your comfortable with surface mount tech. Its not going to be like the i7-4930k but it might hold you off till the prices come down a bit if your one of the people that goes for "bang-for-your-buck". Food for thought.

I'm in the same boat (gonna get the Asrock x99 WS & i7 5930k), though i'm going to buy a hex core xeon to hold me off till the kinks get worked out and prices lower.

A fairly worthy upgrade, but Broadwell-E is probably a better time to pull the trigger.

rjohnson11 The i7-5820 will have limited PCI express lanes so if you are going to run a single GPU or two then you're fine. http://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2206164

I see your dilemma. I'm thinking of starting a new build and jump finally onto 6 cores and it is rather tempting. I agree with Scarlet-Tech though that maybe one should wait a few months after release to have any kinks worked out and possibly lower prices. Have you heard on guru3d that they may skip the 800 label and jump to calling the maxwell gpus 900s already? Whatever they ultimately call it 2 880s or 980s sounds very very good!

Pretty much the same boat I'm in. I will likely upgrade to a X99 board/cpu/ddr4 memory soon, as well as some new cards. However, that date will be a few months into the future.

I am happy with my 970. Keep in mind, games will not play any different on the X99 platform. Just read any of the reviews out there. However, any other cpu intensive stuff is pretty nice jump in performance. ...Although, upgrading to the latest and greatest sure would be fun!!!

Lots of factors involved in that. The amount of overclock you have on your CPU currently, the games you play, single-card vs. SLI, etc. You'll see more of a gain with X99 with an SLI configuration, and more of a gain with newer, more powerful cards, than you will with older cards. You'll still see some of a gain with a single-card, but not nearly as much. Of course, there will be gain for gaming, but that's not what movieman means. He just means that there will be no significant increase in gaming performance, which is arguably in-line with what reviews show. Moreover, that's based on games currently out, as future games could utilize more of the power of the system in the future, but that's just speculation.

I am not going drop $1000 myself as I am not done with X58 yet as these 32nm Xeons are amazing for the cost and I keep 32 PCI Express lanes.. I have been playing around with it some as using turbo and non-turbo and this 4.2Ghz with turbo disabled and ram is at 1600mhz.. video cards are not overclocked yet and that is good enough for 14Th place for the cx7950 firestrike scores.. The cost of DDR4 is absolutely outrageous at the moment. Like what other people have stated, you probably will not be able to notice a performance increase when gaming. You would see a performance jump in CPU intensive programs. I'm still running an nForce 790i with a QX9770 overclocked to 4.0 GHz. I threw a GTX 770 in there and I get phenomenal performance from my system still. It would be awesome to get a hold of an x99 system, but if you already have an i7, your best performance increases in gaming with rely on your graphics card(s).

Wife got me a Newegg gift card for my birthday - x99 here I come. She is a smart woman, she knows that she will get my leftover PC which happens to be i7- 950 with 12Gb ram and (2) GTX 570 in SLI. I've had my x58 w/ i7 - 950 for just short of 4 years and it still is acceptable. Impressive considering every build before that didn't last much more than 1 year for my purposes. I upgraded to the x99 FTW - 5930k - 32gb DDR4 - 1300W supernova - (2) GTX 770 in SLI all in a Corsair 750D. This build has been 2 years in the making.... Parts come in on the 09/12. I can't wait to slap this together!! -kesnik

I ended up going ahead and purchasing the upgrades, and I am going to part out everything, except what I need, from my smaller systems and clean out my room. I am going to keep a few pieces, but the capabilities of this generation will allow me to do more photo editing than what I have, so that alone will be helpful, and there won't be long delays waiting for changes to take place.
The driving factor was seeing how well the new CPUs are overclocking and how well the RAM is performing so far. Can't wait to see it in a year when the bios and hardware has matured.

My primary purpose is gaming however I often record my highlights to disk and make videos. I also edit a lot of my go pro videos. I'm sure these new processors will save a lot of time rendering!! I could have saved a boat load of money and went with the z97 platform which would have provided about the same gaming performance. I agree, buying into a 4790K would be the cheep way, performance per dollar, at this time. I justified spending the extra money with the future in mind. I will have 32gb of DDR4 around to use in future systems and the 2011-3 socket WILL receive future CPU's (hopefully supported by the x99 FTW). -kesnik

Just want to add my 2 cents in about upgrading x58. I was an early x58 adopter and just now upgraded to x99. I am coming from 980x at 4.2ghz with 24 gig 2133 ram. A world of difference! Memory performance has doubled along with a 10 percent increase in performance with my video cards. I get full speed now on my ssd which makes games load a whole lot faster. I don't know if I got lucky or what but this 5930k has never seen 45c yet running intel burn test. Expensive upgrade but well worth it! There is a pretty big learning curve as x99 has so many new features.

You made real upgrade. People expect all the time such improvements. Upgrade from X79 to X99 only because games not worth. I mean on people who had i7-4930K/i7-3930K. Always is best if people wait little to platform show flaws and than they can decide to ignore or to delay upgrade. Example at least 10% of Skylake owners, enthusiasts could prevent headache and waiting new BIOS to fix freezing and other problems with X99 platform. And not only that, after 5-6 months and more is easier to find hardware for better price. But depend of people, someone want to have first week everything and someone want to save 300-350$ if possible. And for X platform sometimes motherboards show up later because chipset stay in top very long and they have time. I update pretty late for me almost 9 months after X99 launch and I should done that 3-4 months earlier but now that's not important.

Intel core i7 960 (bloomfield) @ 3.2 - I have not overclocked it yet... 24gb of DDR3 I think it was 1600 whatever the board allowed me to put in.
I know these are aging and wondering and it only has PCI-E 2.0 ports and am wondering if I put two GTX 750Ti's with 4gb vram each in SLi if that would work and I would be able to play say ARMA3, squad and the new star wars battlefront in 1080p and very high AA and whatnot?
Or are they too old and I need to upgrade them? Also would the GTX 750 Ti's work in this board that only has PCI-E 2.0? 3.0 card are backward compatible no?
Thanks for any help you can give me :)
It will be fine. For 1080p more than fine. 750(Ti) are way less bandwidth hungry than more powerful offerings. Even modern cards (980, Titans and FuryX) can barely saturate Gen.2 x8 bandwidth not to mention x16. Gen.3 PCI-Ex is not really required for VGAs yet. Perhaps Pascal architecture will be the first for consumers. Games don't tax graphic cards as professional VGA (Teslas, Quadro, Firepro) used for heavy computation, modeling and analyses. These Pro card can use the bandwidth, games cannot. There is vast difference in how drivers do things. That's why Teslas or FirePros are as useful at playing games as snooze button on smoke alarm. Any Gen.3 card is backward compatible with Gen.2. With Gen.1 you can run into some issues, but 2 or 3 makes no difference. In real world for home user (not interested in advanced RAID ) what requires Gen.3 is basically 1 thing. NVMe drives. That's it. If by any chance you're interested then most modern RAID AIC will work in Gen.2 slots, but if you want to push every last ounce of performance from SSD arrays you need Gen.3. As a convert from X58 to X99. There is [.......................................................................................................................] gap between 2. I resisted and resisted. And I admit when I finally switched I realized error in my thinking. Every task got such kick that when I do something on X58 (which is running behind me) I'm thinking "faster you old ...." :D

Thanks this Proves my Upgrade is Warranted ! Just bought all components other than Motherboard and PCIe SSD. Waiting on to see whether HBW2 is going to be implimented into the PCIe SSDs ?

Glad to be of help for a change. Ha,ha. Just stay as far as you can from Winblows10. If you value your mental health just pretend it does not exist.

I would look at Intel's cpu/chipset forums. They are seeing some freezing going on with the high end consumer chips. It may be a bios bug, or cpu bug, but it seems to be across the board(no pun intended). I would personally let the bugs settle out first, but then again if you're here, you've likely made up your mind already. The only difference I see between the two in reality is that the motherboard components will be faster. SATA 3, M.2, USB 3.1, PCI-E 3.X, etc. It may be worth it just for that. Intel is just lowering core speed and doubling up on cores to get through the day, whereas the motherboards are the things pushing the speed envelope these days.

movieman I am happy with my 970. Keep in mind, games will not play any different on the X99 platform. Just read any of the reviews out there. However, any other cpu intensive stuff is pretty nice jump in performance. ...Although, upgrading to the latest and greatest sure would be fun!!!
So you saying there will be no performance difference in gaming between x58 DDR3 and x99 DDR4?
Hello sorry I am new and had a question I hope responding to you like this is ok and not breaking any board rules...
I used to game on PC's many many years ago and switched to consoles and have decided to come back to PC's. I havn't kept up so I am really rusty and and wanted to know if my current setup will work with modern games or if I am going to need to upgrade my motherboard and CPU...
My setup is:
Intel core i7 960 (bloomfield) @ 3.2 - I have not overclocked it yet... 24gb of DDR3 I think it was 1600 whatever the board allowed me to put in.
