I need some advice on a good powerful workstation. Here is his question:

My advisor wants to purchase a workstation here, and asked me for help configuring it. Can you point me towards a good configuration? It is supposed to do CPU-intensive calculations with multiple cores, using RAM-intensive software

    Encrypted_GodCPU-intensive calculations with multiple cores

    2xXeon E5-26xx V2

    Encrypted_GodRAM-intensive software

At least 32 GB ECC reg memory
Better use Supermicro or smth like that, e.g. SuperWorkstation 7047A-73 - it's less noisy than others, and still offers good perfomance.
Just add CPUs, RAM, HDDs/SSDs (if you are going to use SSDs, add special 2.5" trays for them), RAID controller and DVD drive (if required). And better use original CPU coolers - they already are installed in this platform. No water cooling or else.

If you have a bit of time before this build I'd wait for X99 should be out at the end of this month. What better for computation than an 8 core CPU? If its RAM you need how about 64 GB of DDR4? Of course like every build you need a budget. For a build like this you'll be looking at close to $3000 for CPU and memory alone. The only workstation I know of atm is the ASRock found here. It supports ECC memory. No doubt Asus will be coming out with there version as well again if you can wait. If you are looking to save a bit then X79 WS.

I agree. An ASRock X99 motherboard with the 8-core i7 and 64GB DDR4 2667mhz ram should do fine. The good thing about ASRock motherboards is most of them seem to support the Xeon models, so you can always go for a 12-Core Xeon as well.
