If you haven't seen or read about some current issues with a few Windows updates recently I would like to take the time to warn you about updating your system using several of the currently issued system kernel updates. KB2976897, KB2982791, and KB2970228 are causing Blue Screen of Death 0x50 errors and many individuals are having problems recovering the system on restart. Generally it is located and centered around the 64 bit systems. The 32 bit versions of the OS are not exhibiting this issue. It is currently recommended to hide these updates and not install them, or remove them if installed.

Just figured you would all like to be well informed as to these issues.

Here is the thread with the above mentioned issues and related reports from users who are experiencing these problems. Please feel free to read through the pages.

    [edit]
They are validating one of the three as fine currently (I haven't listed it here as it's still suspect until a resolution is in order) and a possible temporary boot fix in order to remove the bad updates. The file to remove for restart (using a boot USB or DVD) would be to remove c:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT from your system and restart in order to gain access to the updates and remove them for now.
    [/edit]

    [edit2]
Currently it is isolated to KB2982791 and KB2970228 as for being bad updates. As with anything evaluate the results on your own and make an informed decision to leave the included updates on your system or remove them. It has been mainly reported on only Windows 7/8/8.1 systems. Vista does not seem to be affected by these updates.

I had a bunch of trouble with one of them, I think it was KB2982791.  Fortunately I have Farstone RestoreIt on my system, I ended up just restoring back to a pre-update configuration and then hid that one from Windows Update.

Microsoft has issued a recommendation to remove the following: KB2982791
Here is also the related reference to the Known Issues for KB2982791.

Just figured anyone who was wondering may desire to look at that particular notice.

Thanx James for the heads up on this. Recently I was getting a couple bsods here and there but I was messing with my ram timings also and doing some overclocking, so I was starting to think it was just the cpu and ram degrading a little because when I returned everything back to a known good config the bsods would crop up here and there again. I should have known it would end up being updates!! :P

It should be fine now that they have pulled the offending updates. Just be aware if you see either of those mentioned in your list to remove or hide them.

Yeah it says to delete those 4 files:(Microsoft is investigating behavior in which fonts do not render correctly after any of the following updates are installed:)
MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 12, 2014
Update to support the new currency symbol for the Russian ruble in Windows
August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2
August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012

and make sure this update is INSTALLED-
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2993651)
I can't find them under installed updates so I'm gtg.
