So my current rig has become a hot mess. With the Maximus V I have 1/2" tubing into the CPU then 1/2" > 1/4" into the VRM Block. My reservoir just plain looks like crap. Cable Management is non-existent. It is 100% functional and kicks ass in all current games. My delided 3770k is rock stable @ 4.6G. Mostly I'm looking to upgrade the aesthetics which is a little insane considering I'm the only one who sees it. My plan is to tear it all down. Paint the interior and mobo tray. Upgrade my 30mm Swiftech rad to a 60 mm Alphacool or EK. Replace CPU block and reservoir. If I'm doing all this I guess I'd like to upgrade the Motherboard & CPU. I'm seeing a lot of mixed reviews on the clearly over hyped 4790k. Any thoughts appreciated. Oh, and enjoy this pic.

If you have the extra money then upgrade but if it was me I would keep your cpu/M.B. since you are not going to get a huge upgrade inless you are going for x99/x79. I would spend the money on waterblocks for the vid. cards and a water block for the M.B.,maybe some more ram even though you have 16gb you could fill up your 2 other slots, sleeved cables for the psu and the do the other things you mentioned in your post.

Then no Definately not worth it. They do 4.7 on average. You wont see any night and day difference.

The only reason to upgrade from what you have is if there is a feature you can not achieve with your current system. M.2? I can't think of any.

I went from the 3770k to the 4790k hoping to get 5.0 on water but not even close 4.7, I would say no its not worth the upgrade.

I am on 46 GHz on my ASUS Maximus V Extreme Z77 and had it running the same on my ASUS Maximus V Formula Z77. My Maximus V Extreme Z77 holds my 5 GHz Record. I would say No it would not be worth it. By the way Nice Looking Rig. I would have given you a +1 if you had a setup.

With the Maximus V I have 1/2" tubing into the CPU then 1/2" > 1/4" into the VRM Block -what I did was to use two small metal t fittings I put one t on the cpu block out, main flow [1/2x3/4 to bay res.] other port [side of it] of the t out ,ran 3/8 tube to the bottom vrm block in port. from the vrm block top out port 3/8 back to the bay res in [lack of ports in had to use the second t] the vrm branch does not need a lot of water flow [it bleeds the air so flow is there] so doings it this way I did not degrade the flow of my loop.

Don't know why ya would buy a new board plus CPU just for aesthetics. Just pull the VRM block so it simplifies the loop and quits restricting the flow rate, and depending on how much air flow the case has add a fan to blow across the VRM area if it needs it.
Have water, will cool.

The cost is too much to justify what is pretty much going to be a parallel move. The difference in performance per clock is only about 6%. Your only gain would be a little quicker latency timing on PCI-E lanes and a slightly better memory controller.

Better keep Z77 until X99 show up. You can prepare watercooling parts if you want. GPU blocks, new tubes, radiator, reservoir and replace and for 2-3-4 months if you like X99 performance. i7-4790K is better CPU than 4770K, 500MHz faster and best option if someone no system or have old system. But with X99 you will get and visual and performance, more cores, newer memory standard, DDR4 Quad Channel.

Well, 4790K is not a big upgrade over 3770K, clock for clock maybe 10-12% improvement, but you have to consider that 4790K won't clock as high as 3770K would ... so depending on your luck in chip lottery, in the end you may end up at same performance level as you have now :) On the other hand you can still sell your MVE board and current 3770K at good money on fleabay, so upgrading only the MB+CPU (current RAM still works fine) may cost you next to nothing, depending on your MB choice and source of CPU (Microcenter is always cheapest if you have one nearby, that's great).

I don't know I somehow think that upgrade on at least i7-5820K is better if someone need new rig now, special if we talk about someone who is not in financial situation to change mind for 6 months and cross on X99. New memory standard is here and don't even to talk about long term of DDR4 upgrade and Intel 6 cores. Now start new race by memory manufacturer immediately when first people build rig, they will start to offer faster and cheaper kits only to pull more people to upgrade on X99. But we still didn't see performance of that processor, temps and how well OC that's most important thing in hole story. If motherboard support SATA Express or M.2 closest feature what I can see as something new is PCIE 4.0 gen on Skylake. That's for two years and how much will be improvement will be visible. For 4790K paying similar price for everything and look all others who upgrade on DDR4 and you just build new DDR3 platform... I don't know... i7-3770K on 4-4.5GHz is very close to new Haswell processors... I mean we talk about upgrade for 10-12% visible only in test for processors, with same number of cores and several years old DDR3 in time when fast DDR4 is available and 6 cores Intel.

oh yes, I 100% agree, big upgrades to X platforms are best, so X99 with new octa-core and 3-SLI over PCIe 3.0 :) ... however that would cost a ton, assuming that new DDR4 memory will be extremely overpriced at first for early adopters ;) ... while replacing a MB + CPU with similarly priced components, is somewhat an upgrade within same grade ... that being said I am going myself for a "side-grade" to Z97+4790K for now, all in all a $0 cost if I am lucky selling old parts (going with new cheaper class board) :) ... at same time, I am also dreaming about going X99 route myself, let's say a year after it's launched, hopefully I will be able to, financially speaking (a different story ha ha!). I am not thrilled by DDR4 yet (especially its initially estimated pricing), but 40 native PCIe lanes on any X platform is the definite hook for me, but I can wait longer ... it makes my wallet (and wife) happier, so why not LOL!

For me is enough 28 with i7-5820K for strong single card. My ideal system would be i7-5930K on 4.0GHz with EVGA Classified graphic card fabric overclocked as now. But with i7-5820K I'm satisfied too, special if work stable on 4.0GHz(700MHz+) because I don't think on SLI. Next will be same class submarine.

Good plans. I guess I'll wait til x99 & save up some more $$$. That DDR4 price is gonna be bonkers. Just saw this http://www.tomshardware.com/news/asus-x99-deluxe-haswell-e,27540.html article. x99 is looking pretty sweet. I'd be interested to see what eVGA has coming. Just hope they can get pick up the quality & get the BIOS right this time. Haven't been impressed with their boards since x58 and even those were kinda hit or miss.
