Hello EVGA forums, this is my second topic!

My first one was about artifacting, which happened to my previous GPU (also a 660 TI).  I've since RMA'ed, installed the replacement, and have run into a new problem.  Whenever I play graphic-intensive games like Call of Duty: Ghosts or Sniper Elite V2, I get a system lock, followed by a white screen of death and sound loop before having to reboot my system.  This happens randomly but infrequently whenever I play these games.  No sign of artifacting occurs with it.

System specs as follows:
(I upgraded some other hardware when I got the old 660 TI replaced)

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
Mobo: ASUS P8 Z77-V LK LGA 1155
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB dual channel (4x4 GB) PC3 12800
Power Supply: Corsair 750W CMPSU-750TX ATX12V v.2.3 SLI ready
CPU: Intel i5-3570K Ivy Bridge Quad Core 3.4 GHz (3.8 GHz Turbo) LGA 1155
GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 660 TI
Monitor: ACER 24" LCD HDMI - and I use the HDMI hookup
No extra PCI hookups and no SLI config.

Both the mobo and CPU are pretty new along with the RMA'd GPU.  I haven't performed any manual overclocking to my system or turbo-boosting to my CPU yet.  All components are setup according to default specs.  Latest NVIDIA driver is 337.88.

Any help comes much appreciated.

Try downclocking the video card & let me know what happens...

Downclock GPU using EVGA Precision X.

Set both GPU Clock Offset & Mem Clock Offset -105 from default clocks using the latest version of precision x. If you can't set both -105 from default clocks using the latest version of precision x download the older version here and try again. If you still can't downclock both the GPU & Memory install driver 332.21 and try again. If downclocking the GPU helped resolve the crashing/error you will need to RMA your card as it's defective.

NOTE: Make sure to uninstall the latest version of precision x before installing the older version, you must select "NO" to saving profiles & reboot the PC before installing the older version, you will need to follow these steps again when re-installing the latest version.

Done.  -105 off both clocks using PrecisionX.  I'll repost if anything happens.

It happened again, even with the change of settings.

Did you perform a clean install of the driver with only physx selected or did you perform a express install when installing the 337.88 drivers?

I believe it was an express install.  After I upgraded my mobo and processor, I put 331.82 back on first and then updated to 337.88.

probably time for a fresh install of Windows
I have the GTX 660 Ti FTW Signature 2 and it has not been a problem, mind you I have fans galore in my rig so nothing gets warm
337.88 is more stable, the beta is problematic

It appears that your fix worked, Sajin.  Since I did what you instructed, I haven't had any more crashes.  I'll reset the clocks of Precision, keep an eye on things, and post again if any errors come back up.  Hopefully they won't.

Thanks for your assistance!

Good news and bad -

The bad news: I'm still getting the error
The good news: It's not as serious or as frequent

Previously, I was getting white screens of death accompanied by a sound loop, necessitating a reboot.  I'm now getting a frozen screen with the sound loop.  On the bright side, it's only happened twice in the last week whereas before I attempted the fixes mentioned on here, it kept happening almost every day.

So what's next?

Did a clean reboot and got the sound loop and freeze a few hours later while I was watching Youtube.  Didn't reboot it again anytime before.

Re: GTX 660 TI - Crashing In-Game 2014/07/30 21:18:20 (permalink)
I didn't have it installed, since there was no entry under my Add/Remove programs or in regedit.  Upon checking under C:/ProgramData, though, I found a folder for ASUS AI Suite II, which had an installer that wouldn't run, so I deleted the folder and rebooted.  As I recall, I believe I tried to install it when I first reformatted and put my OS back on, but I ended up not doing it.

I'll go ahead and try stress testing it again.  In the meantime, what else can be done?

Other things to try:

Make sure your motherboard BIOS is fully up to date.
Try reseating the video card & it's power connections.
Try a different PCI-E slot.
Try testing all the hardware in your system to make sure everything is 100%.
Re-install windows again just to make sure no software or driver conflicts are going on.
Try testing the card in another system to see if the issue follows the card.

Re: GTX 660 TI - Crashing In-Game 2014/07/31 20:00:55 (permalink)
Hello, I just got my new Geforce GTX 660 (not TI) today, and I have been trying to play Watch_Dogs all day. My problem is the same as Falcons. On one occasion I could play for a good 20 minutes, another I was literally only playing the game 15 seconds before a crash. Each crash seems to be different, a couple of times a black screen with looping audio, I ended up having to hit the power button. Another just left me with a black screen, but the monitor did not give me the 'no signal' message so it was still receiving signals the entire time. I let it sit for probably 5 minutes, and nothing happened. No audio from the speakers, and a press of the power button did nothing even after patiently waiting for a couple of minutes to see if the system would turn off. My only option was to reach around the back of the computer and flip the switch on the power supply. I alt+tabbed out of the game every few minutes or so, and the temperature leveled out at around 74c. Watch_Dogs is the only 'intense' game I have, and other less straining games don't crash.
I am getting pretty frustrated as I have no idea what the issue is. My previous card was an AMD Radeon HD Sapphire Vapor-X 7700

Oh, and here are my specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
MOBO: ASUS P8Z77-V LE PLUS
RAM: G SKILL Ripjaw 8GB
PSU: Corsair Builder CX600 600W
CPU: Intel i3-3220 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz
GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 660 2GB
HDD: WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB
internet card: TP-LINK TL-WN881ND

I have 2 monitors, one of them an ACER ~22in using the DVI-I connection with analog adapter, the other an INSIGNIA TV (around ~14, not sure of actual) using an HDMI connection.
Nothing is overclocked

PS: Forgot to mention above, during one of the crashes the card recovered after about 10 seconds. Watch_Dogs was closed down by the time the picture came up. I also saw during this incident that CPU cores 1 and 2 were both red lined at 100%, and cores 3 and 4 had absolutely 0% during the time of the black screen. I'm pretty sure I also got the looping audio during the black screen.

I would love some help!

Nice to know I'm not alone, Gadget.

Unfortunately, my error is a bit more serious because I can't even Alt-Tab.  No key inputs seem to register and all I can do is force a restart manually by holding the power button.

Also, I ran checks on all my hardware and came back clean.  I'll see about swapping PCI slots on the 660 and report back on what happens.

I think we had a bit of a misunderstanding. I can ALT+TAB while the game is actually functional, but once the crash starts nothing can be done but listen to the audio loop and cry. I'm starting to think this is a defective card, I might look into an RMA tomorrow. Let me know if swapping the PCI slots helps at all, I was running my old card in the same spot with no problems.

Ah, okay.  In that case it sounds like the same issue.  I'll let you know what happens with the swap.  Looks like we have the same mobo, though.  I wonder if that has something to do with it.

It's not the motherboard, I have a Gigabyte M68MT-S2 board and I've been having this crashing problem for a very long time now. In my case it almost always causes a system crash and auto-restarts after about 10 seconds of hanging audio. Sometimes it will recover but that just means it'll happen later. I'm noticing a correlation between graphic intensity and frequency of crashes.

I've just sent it in as an RMA while it was still good. Ordered a 760 instead, the ACX cooler fits my needs better anyways. Hopefully this one actually works

hi friends.i find you in google.you are not alone.
i have this problem from 2 month ago (some days after i buy my new system).
i tried these : (use my experience and do not waste your time)
with after burner, i increase fan speed to 80% const.with this way you can play crysis3 , call of ghost, sniper and ... with high detail, for 2,3,4 hours.sometime 1 full day.
but the problem and crashing still exist.just with longer period time.after using this method, available time will decreased steadily.
i tried with user defined fan speed for every 0.1 seconds or 1 seconds and 15 degree.this method help to increase gaming time.but not resolve problem.
also changing fan speed is not a good idea.(even if solving problem)
i updated my bios.i tested my rams.no problems.i updated my drivers (no beta).it is not solution.
it is not from game or windows.it is not any software problem.

also after some days gaming, exactly in high traffic in game and high details and stressing system, after crashing my windows lost and i receive memory error:
the instruction at 0x0004d5a8 referenced memory at 0x0006f335.the memory could not be written.click ok to terminate the program.
clicking ok will raise another error like this.
do not wait friends.change your graphic cards.this model (g 650 ti) is not good product.change it and do not search for software solutions.(i wasted my time)
gadgat3! please feedback me about your new card with Crysis3 and call of ghost with high detail and resolution in game.(very high detail.maximum)

Should I just RMA my card until I can get a new one in the future, or will this not remedy the problem? I still can't tell if it's a hardware or software problem, but I'm starting to think it's hardware.

Re: GTX 660 TI - Crashing In-Game 2014/08/04 20:08:03 (permalink)
I think you should RMA your card potato, I came to this decision after checking several forums and NONE of them had any rock solid answers. Just 'try this' or 'maybe this will fix it' is all I ever saw. I think the entire 600 series has problems, and EVGA is just hoping all the cards get sold and this all blows over. My new 760 will be here in a few days, will be back to let you all know if it works or not.

mohsen, I don't have Crysis 3 but I have heard from others that it gets around 30-35 FPS with maxed out ultra settings which is decent. BF4 you get 50-70 FPS on ultra settings. So the 760 is a really nice card, for the price. If you have a large budget and a computer that can handle it get the 780 ti. Also keep in mind that the cooler in the 760 works best with a case that has high airflow, if you have poor airflow on your case then you want to get one with a reference cooler (The one in the 660). The ACX cooler blows hot air around in the case, but the reference cooler blows hot air straight out of the back. For cases with good airflow, the cards with ACX coolers generally have a much lower temperature than the reference ones.

Good luck everyone!

Re: GTX 660 TI - Crashing In-Game 2014/08/06 00:52:37 (permalink)
I want to post here to say thanks to everyone for their helpful ideas and solutions.  From this thread and another one posted in this forum,  it is a nice comprehensive list of things to troubleshoot.  (running out of options though and no fix found)

I have been experiencing the same issue with artifacting and then the system hard locking.  Happens under heavy load and it is pretty consistent when i try to load games that stress it.

I've not made any changes to my system and it had been running great for 14 months with those same games.  And dealing with this problem now for 2-3 months.

I have tried different drivers, fresh installs and no luck.  Thorough cleaning of the motherboard, PCI-E slot, vid card and tried re-seating it. [02G-P4-2660-KR]
And i just tried what Sajin posted above.  The lowering of the default clocks didn't help.

I forgot to try switching to the 2nd PCI-E slot,  so i will give that a go next.

The last thing i researched,  is the mention of a faulty power supply that could give "bad power" under high load.  Having to replace it is my last option.  Currently using a Corsair TX750 and probably going with an affordable EVGA SuperNova 650w Gold PSU.  I have seen a lot of good reviews about the EVGA Gold PS because they have higher quality components.  The Bronze PSU is about where i want to budget for.  But i don't want to deal with possible crap in the future and i am willing to spend a bit more for that piece of mind.(I dont like tinkering with my PC all that much)

Please let me know if you feel i should be doing anything different or if you have other ideas.

Thanks!!

I'm going to same you some headache here, step up to a 700 series as soon as possible. It's a problem with the 600 series in general, there is no problem with any part of your computer. I tried every possible fix and nothing worked, you have a larger power supply than me and mine suffices. You can buy yourself some time to buy a new card by RMA-ing your card.

TL;DR Buy a 700 series card ASAP

Yea thanks Potato,  i have read a few of those discussions.

I can only make smaller upgrades to my PC to get it running as it was before,  which was stable and pretty good.

I am saving up for a brand new system in Dec or 2015.  700 series is a big purchase and what i am planning for the new PC.

So hopefully i can find a simple, inexpensive option to keep my current PC going.
