Ok so i upgraded to the x79 dark motherboard from a gigabyte one that was 3 years old a few weeks back. i even got a new processor. I am by no ways new o pc building however this motherboard and its manual are very small

The manual and the weird poster like thing they give you states to install ram in dimms 1,3,5,7 however this does not work. however when i just put ram in Dimms 1,2 it works fine but if i put in anymore ram in say dimms 3 and 4 it wont boot it just hangs after the Bios boot screen. is there a correct way to insall RAM on this mobo im not used to have the compatability with 64gbs just the old 16 and 32

Hello & welcome to the forums.  What is the part number for the memory that you are using?  Also what CPU are you using.  I am currently running 32GBs of ram in my DARK in slots 1 / 3 / 5 / 7, see the screen show below to how it displays in the BIOS.  Also have you tried each stick of ram individually, perhaps you have a defective stick?  Also what BIOS are you running on the motherboard?

Hi the ram is corsair by make th epart number is CMZ32GX3M4A11600C9 in bios is states its running at 1333mhz even though the 1600 in the part number indicates it should be 1600 this was the same on my old PC (the ram was only baught about 3 months ago on amazon and i didnt want to waste money buy buying completely new ram for a new build)

The CPU is an I7-4820k which i upgraded from an original I7 (cant remember the part number/code though)

also to note i havent upgraded the bios yet as i wanted to get the build working at 100% first before fidling with that so its bios build 2.07

Install 2 (or even 1) sticks of ram in the slots that you got into the bios with.
Once in the bios Manually set your RAM speed, Voltage and Timings to the
RAM's default settings (1600mhz you said). Maybe even jump up one or two notches on the RAM voltage.
    Save and exit.
Shut down the PC and then try installing all your DIMMs.
Make sure your RAM is properly inserted (some have mentioned that contact in the DIMM slots
    can be iffy at times).

    Report back.

Re: Another stupid question 2014/07/30 07:00:03 (permalink)
Installing memory into an even numbered slot will result in a failed POST unless you have all the odd numbered DIMMS populated. The DIMM layout is numbered from left to right: 1 - 2 - 3- 4 | CPU | 8 - 7 - 6 - 5, so make sure you have the memory in the proper slots.

If that doesn't help, try loosening the cooler on the CPU. If it's too tight, it can either put too much pressure on the CPU and cause the memory controller to flake out, or it can flex the board to the point that CPU pins pull away from the CPU. Ideally lying the case on it's side and just resting the cooler on top of the CPU without screwing it down will eliminate a pressure issue. Also testing each stick of memory in slot 1 to confirm each stick is working isn't a bad idea. If all the sticks work in slot 1 but it still won't boot with more sticks with the cooler loose, then may either be a BIOS issue or a faulty board. Try flashing the BIOS just to make sure, and if that doesn't do the trick I suggest contacting us for an RMA replacement.

Hi evga tech jaeson,  have slackended the CPU cooler but i didnt think that was the issue as i didnt tighten i super tight anyway just thumbscrew tight as i have a h100

With the ram in slots. I have the Ram in slots 1 and 2 aswell as 5 and 6 wihout the rest populated and it has posted and booted into windows 7. Im currently running all the programes i can, Maya. Unreal engine, Cryengine and all the programmes i used daily at uni and as a freelance 3d artists and it seems to be handling them fine? Im going to run a Windows mem check again then try slots 1,3,5,7 as suggested but this is deffinetly working. I take it however that it is not meant to work like this - Im not used to having 8 dimms as previously stated and the manual leaves allot to be desired in comparison to the one that came with my last one whihc literally went through what all the LED lighst on the baord mean and do (although this one is not that bad but i would rather just have everything in the manual than have an a3 poster which just deatils the board and component installation but hey that is just me being pickey. (again that was a pretty high end board aswel i generally do not cheap out on the motherboard because a good one can last a long time and thats why i went with the x79 dark as-well as the ram support)

anyway cheers for the help and before i phone you guys ill buy some more ram and test that ( i was going to run 64gbs anyways so i dont see why i cant just try 64gb and see if that works)

Can you post a screenshot of your BIOS or the picture of the ram installed in the motherboard.  Also can you download CPUz (  http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.70-en.zip  ) and post a screencap of the Memory tab + each of the memory slots via the SPD tab.

Yeah that is not how the board is designed to run the memory my guess CPUz would show the ram in Dual Channel mode.  The voltage on the ram is OK for the Dark though, that was going to be one of my concerns.  Is that CPU overclocked?  If it is have you tried the default slots without the overclock, the 1/3/7/5 ( RAM - BLANK - RAM - BLANK - CPU - BLANK - RAM - BLANK - RAM ), ones in the order mentioned by: EVGATech_JaesonW  @ the slots over of: 1 - 2 - 3- 4 | CPU | 8 - 7 - 6 - 5

1, 3 , 5 , 7 does not work atall the pc power up but it does not get to post in the configuration, and yes your right it does show up as dual Chanel i cpu id. This is really ticking me off now. I can tell from having tested that its dimm 3 not working as in ram, none, ram none, cpu, none, ram, none, ram. I was 2 weeks without a pc because of the last motherboard being broken and now i guess im going to have to go without as i need a decent amount of ram to render and run the programmes i use on a daily bases.

the last test was to reflash the Bios and this did not work. Therefore i give up. i shall return this to amazon for a full refund as the RMA process i assume will be a long drawn out process and i need the replacement by the end of the week if i am to actually get any work done before next semester

What is the error code on the LED on the mobo when you go to boot in 1/3/5/7 or have you already started to disassemble the rig?

i stated it earlier, its 63 - 67 usually, i can it usually stalls on 67 with all PCE lights flashing. Somoene suggested a power surge on another forum, but if it was that its ram related because it works fine with the ram in slots 1/2 and 5/6, i was going to order some new ram but not at 300.00 to match what i currently have (in what world has it come to where ram is as expensive as the motherboard and CPU and even some of the low end high end GPU's) lol screw that.

Ahh my bad I missed the previous mention of the LED codes, just post back here when you get the new Motherboard I will watch the thread and follow up if you have any questions.  As per the memory, I know how you feel.  I wanted to get 64GBs into my rig.  A price comparison, ordered 4x8GBs on 10/22/2012 and paid  $189.99, now its $344.99 ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006507PJI ).  I think the increase in ddr ram is related to the surge in the SSD / tablet / phone market, the manufactures are not making enough memory for computers so the stock is depleting down.

Price increases mentioned: http://seekingalpha.com/news/1709143-micron-gains-dram-price-hikes-reportedly-on-tap & http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20140716PD205.html & http://www.tweaktown.com/news/37424/micron-may-hike-dram-chip-prices-due-to-insufficient-supply/index.html .  Anyway best of luck with the new motherboard, if the new mobo doesn't fix it maybe the CPU has issues with the memory controllers on that channel?

I would try the RMA on the board, if that doesn't fix it then lean towards the CPU.  Do you have another CPU to test with?
