Hi all,

I build a miniITX system yesterday in a Silverstone RVZ01 with a GTX 780 (reference cooler), and I am concerned with a few readings from GPU-Z.

The card idles at around 45C with a fan speed of 27%. For perspective, CPU temps (i5-4690) are ~28C. My concern however lies with the fan RPM reading of 0.

I will be testing the temps at load and updating this post later but for now, does anyone else experience this?

Seems a little high for idle temps, but that might be expected considering you're running in an MITX case.... can you open the case and verify that your fan is spinning?
You should probably open Precision X or Afterburner and play with your fan curves a bit, I set mine to where the fan runs at 10% higher speed than what the temp reading is, so if my temps are 40C, my fan is running at 50%, this brings temps down really fast.

Edit: I just looked at your case on Newegg, it really doesn't appear that the graphics card gets much airflow in that case, so I think we can explain your higher than average idle temps.... unless I'm wrong, you really might want to consider another case, not a good idea to starve a 780 for air.

Edit2: Heh actually nevermind, just watched a review of that case on youtube, it has two fans feeding the graphics card on the side/bottom, I'd definitely recommend running the case vertically instead of horzontally..... it doesn't look like like the feet are high enough to allow good airflow in the horizontal config.

I knew this would be related to the GPU. I've tested the card out of the case and it appears the GPUs fan is the culprit; it doesn't spin at all. Considering this, I'm surprised it reaches the temps it does.

Looks like an RMA is in order. Thanks for the advice above zombiemutant.

I would've never guessed the fan actually wasn't spinning considering those temps, I thought at worst you had a bad fan sensor and less than optimal airflow o.O

I'm very surprised myself. Since putting the card back in my case, it's now idle at 38C. It's going to be very interesting to see what the temps are like when the fan is actually working.

One thing you could try before starting the RMA process.... open up prceision X and manually set your fan up to 100%... believe me, you'll hear it if it works..... might be just enough to kickstart that fan and get it working properly.

Just gave that a try. On opening the app, the fan was already at 100%. Setting it to 0% and back to 100% did nothing. Looks like it's hardware related. GPU is now idle at 36C though. Not sure I trust that figure.

Hmmmm, well it was worth a try..... It might be idling lower now because of cool night/morning air.... but what temp you're idling at right now really isn't of much consequence anyway if the fan isn't working, because as soon as you put some load on it, it's gonna go through the roof :/

Good luck with the RMA..... I guess you could try taking the cooler off and checking that the fan is connected at all, but not sure you'd want to mess with that or not.

I have some good news. I managed to get the GPU's fan spinning. I have no idea why it worked, but installing it on a different motherboard finally kick-started the fan. Once I transplanted the card back to the original system, the fan was still working. The idle temp has now dropped to a very chill 27C

Thanks for the support anyway guys.
