Moving from a asus z67 board to the EVGA x79 classified. On my old setup I had to wipe clean my hdds in order to create the RAID 1 mirror. Is it possible on the x79 classified to create the RAID 1 mirror without wiping clean the HDDs?

also, These hdds are not boot drives. They are a separate volume that is used for storage. 2 x 3tb drives. I don't have an external big enough to back them up.

I'm hoping its possible to install one drive and have it clone itself to the other? Or maybe since they are already mirrors they wont even need to clone?

I don't think it's possible transitioning from Asus X-67 to EVGA X-79 Classy off your boot drive. However...I may be blind but I don't see that you've achieved or indicated that. I have done a X-58 to my X-79 classy without a problem. But that was about a year ago so I can't give you a 100% on that.

As far as your raid? Boy...I am hoping that someone else can chime in on this but I don't think you can without wiping. I mean I've done a raid 1 before and even a 0 but I've always used the raid as a boot. I'm sorry that my answer isn't really a answer but as I said...I hope other EVGA members can help.

not yet unfortunately. I'll be home sunday and will pull my current rig apart then and instal the x79 classified. Hopefully with some tinkering i'll figure it out.

Side note, any advice for OC'ing a 3820 on the x79 classified? That's the chip I got to put in it!

Best way to do this is to backup your partition to another drive. Transfer to the new motherboard. Wipe the array and then restore the backup. Before it boots into Windows for the 1st time boot from the Windows DVD or USB stick and choose the repair option.

Right...But he said he doesn't have a large enough HDD for the backup. I had a feeling that it wasn't possible to do what he asked. But as I said; I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks guys for clarifying that

    Thanks for everyone's replies!

Weirdest thing.  I went ahead and plugged my 2 x 3tb drives in today to setup raid like I had on my old computer, but somehow it was already set up. When I plugged both drives in, the computer booted and showed that RAID menu. In the RAID menu it showed the two 3tb drives both as Member disk. So I booted into windows and there was the single safe volume I had created.

    ?????

I'm guessing it is the same RAID controller? And since it was the same RAID controller it recognized my old volume?

The ICHR chipset marks the disks, so you can even take them from one machine to another without rebuilding the RAID. It seems to be also true with Marvel chipset.

It is not weird, it is normal.

I did it several times, through several machines, with different chipsets : ICH8R -> ICH9R, and then ICH10R, without having to rebuild.

Sometime, I also used the Intel raid this way : took one disk to an external enclosure and connected it as a single drive to another machine, used it, and then replugged in the first machine -> rebuild with the new data updated. It can be useful, for example when you travel with a laptop. Just take one disk, work with it, and then rebuild when you're back.

I also tested from NVidia NForce to Intel ICHR and vice versa, but it did'nt work very well. As far as I remember, the NForce did'nt like the Intel drives.

why make it simple when it can be complicated ????

    Yes!

It automatically detected my old raid volumes. I didn't need to do anything besides plug them in.
