It seems MS just want to leave W8 behind and forget about it. It was a bitter experience for them, so it makes sense for them to put it behind, never talk about it and move along... Now with renewed energy and leadership, they're gonna push W9, and hope to get things right this time.

Looking forward to jumping from W7 to W9 if it moves towards a faster, more efficient desktop style OS than W7.  Time will tell...

I have had 0 issues with Windows 8/8.1. Most people are just unwilling to learn something new. Same thing with the Windows Vista hate. The actual OS was fine. The tech specs of the computers it was being installed on was FAR below what they should have been. That's why a lot of people claimed Vista was slow and frustrating. I laugh at people who build high-end gaming rigs nowadays and put Windows 7 on them. Everything runs faster and benches higher on Windows 8, pretty much. Seems like a waste of good hardware to me.

I agree but none the less Vista is slower in desktop tasks than 7. I saw that first hand, in 2009 I had Vista Home Premium installed on an Athlon 64 X2 6400BE, 4gb DDR2 800, and Geforce GTS250. My desktop preformance improved alot with Windows 7 Home on it, and I tested that as well last year by tossing Vista onto an FX6300 @ 4.8, 8gb of DDR3 1333, and GTX 660, 7 and 8 blew Vista away in general snappiness.

Windows 8 doesn't have the problems of Vista, its snappier than 7 a lot snappier.

This is what I've been saying, but some people still flame for saying Windows 8 and 8.1 is efficient and easy to learn.

The problem is people don't want to learn.

Because there is nothing wrong with Windows 8.1 as it works as intended and well at that.

It's a annoyance when people present qualitative opinion as quantitative fact. Then again, it's the internet and that sort of thing is what fills up 99% of it's content...well, that and cat pictures.

Just to clarify, when I meant bitter experience, I was talking for MS because they failed in packaging and marketing the product, which in itself is terrific. What they messed up with was RT, and that they tried too many new things at the same time; selling hardware and OS, which were both unconventional for the masses. Any negative review on anything related to their HW and OS, reflected on both, which in turn resulted in terrible market penetration on both fronts.

I've been running W8/8.1 for more than a year now and it's miles better than W7 for me. It's faster, handles multitasking better, handles drivers better, handles HW failures better, etc. etc. I don't see how once a person starts using Win 8.1, they can go back to Win 7.

I also don't see what Win 9 is to bring to table on top of Win 8.1. Seems I'll wait for Win X; $10 says it will be Win X, not Win 10 ;)

Learning to use Windows 8.x isn't a problem. Efficiency using the modern UI is a pain, hence why I use Classic Shell. Other clients of mine who have 8.x like Classic Shell as well.

Not every year, but it seems every 2 years will be the norm now. For old timers and IT departments, it's meaningless and a pain. But for the mainstream crowd, anything longer than 2 years would seem like an eternity and give them to bash MS for being too slow etc. The fast culture has been adopted now, I guess many thanks to Google with their Chrome and Android. Even Mozilla followed suit in the browser department, they had to, since the half-witted mainstream crowd values pace more than anything these days. The way I see, MS is just trying to fit in really...

    Windows 2000 (2000) > XP (2001) ~ 1 Year
    XP (2001) > Vista (2007) ~ 6 Years
    Vista (2007) > 7 (2009) ~ 2 Years
    7 (2009) > 8 (2012) ~ 3 Years

    8 (2012) > 9 (2015??) ~ 3 Years?

I based the years on general availability and not release to manufacture.

I'd say three years would be the norm at this rate. It'll also mean less features are added to older versions of windows still under mainstream support when a new one comes out. Microsoft doesn't seem to support the proceeding operating systems as much as they used to.

They wanted to kill Windows 8.0 support asap when 8.1 was released, but people complained and now it's extended until 2016.

Under the hood, 8 is great. I can only imagine how well 9 will be with even further optimizations.

Well I haven't seen any announcements yet so that tells me that Microsoft isn't ready yet or they are concentrating first on the next windows 8.1 update.

I have had 0 issues with Windows 8/8.1. Most people are just unwilling to learn something new. Same thing with the Windows Vista hate.

Strongly agree. Have only positive experience with W8.1, either at my personal laptop, or my desktop at office.

+1 I love windows 8/8.1 all you have to learn is the windows key and windows key and X those two things you can get to anything and get to it quickly.

And why on earth is that?

    And why on earth not?

Because there is nothing wrong with Windows 8.1 as it works as intended and well at that.

It's a annoyance when people present qualitative opinion as quantitative fact. Then again, it's the internet and that sort of thing is what fills up 99% of it's content...well, that and cat pictures.

Besides the new interface, there isn't anything wrong with it. Those that cannot adapt, well, adapt or die.

The interface is exactly whats wrong with it. Its not that people cant adapt but to many it seems a pointless step forward, especially for desktop users who it feels unnatural for.

Windows+X is totally unnatural, please make the ease of use stop. I need a 20 year old start menu or I'm lost guys.

It's all in the way people look at it.
There's no reason not to use Windows 8.1 right now, it's actually really well done with regards to stability and responsiveness.

There's just 2 ways of looking at it:

    1) Where's my 20 year old start button, I hate change, waaaaaah waaaaaaaaaah, this sucks, hey guys lets jump on the media bandwagon on this one and complain like spoiled children who deserve our way, this is worse than Vista

    2) Get used to it, wow Windows+X is all I really needed, I don't use Metro on my 4930K gaming rig but it doesn't bother me because I'm not going to cry about it on internet forums for internet sympathy

Seriously it's a menu. You're only browsing porn in desktop mode anyways.

I have used Win 8 and found in a lot of ways I liked it. Fast boot times, easy connectivity. Stable, if a crash occurs from overclocking win 8 recovers well. I also could see maybe if you are using a touch screen/tablet the interface might be OK.
For me though going to the corner with your cursor, having say pics/open programs or what ever hiding in the corner, extremely annoying. No  multiple windows, and I'm sorry but there isn't a darn thing wrong with a start button. Should have had option of how the OS would be installed like Tablet/touch screen PC, or traditional PC.
If you are someone who just can't stand the start button then you could have the option of installing with no fricken stupid start button because you hate it and wish it had never been there in the first place. What the hell was Microsoft thinking when they created such a useless thing as that annoying start button.

8.1 is good, but after months of use I think the start button metro thing sucks. I just do not think its intuitive for a desktop. Behind the scenes it runs awesome. Looks like 9 will be the proper evolution we all hope for.

Windows 8 is a tricky thing to think about. Overall, it's an improved OS that is more efficient than Windows 7 (it helps when they remove a lot of the eye candy), but the big con of Windows 8 is the horrible Metro UI. Thank god for start8 or else I'd still be running Windows 7. I just don't see why they would've merged their tablet/phone/computer into one OS. The WORST idea ever. It's a great idea to make them work great together but to make them the same OS is just stupid.

Microsoft needs to learn from Apple and innovate instead of trying to beat them (Like how Apple use to be in the 90s). Apple has done a great job with OSX Yosemite continuity with iOS 8 devices. That's what Microsoft should have thought about from the start.
