    Not sure I understand the relevance of a special external drive design. Just plug any old USB3 drive in and call it good. Not like people are using that much disc media anymore.

    Exactly. I havn't had and optical drive for years and definately not missing one. I see the point in external ODD via USB interface for media-on-disc (music, movies, old games), but I don't see the point in wasting precious space in a portable PC for something like an optical drive.
     
    Just give us more external connections so we can hook up more accessories!

    Same here I dont even bother. The only time I use them is for installing Operating Systems
