I recently moved, and during the move I must have damaged my 10 year old Z560 sub

It rattles and sounds rather disturbing.  This speaker system is dear to me because I sold my plasma back in college in order to buy these, so I bought these speakers with blood money

In any event, the sub is shot so it is time to look for a new system.

It has been a long time since I looked at PC speakers, so I am looking for advice into what to get.

I mostly game on my pc, but I do sometimes listen to music.

My first thought is the Z906's as they are Logitech's top of the line system

Anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks!

I think if I were you, I'd open up the sub and see what the problem is before buying brand new ones. Might be something as simple as a loose wire or bolt.

Avoid Logitech and get something better.  How much are you willing to spend?  I see the Z906 usually goes for $350-400.  I recommend going for something like one of these.

Or if you're feeling more spendy, go with one of these and an affordable Yamaha or Denon 5.1 receiver.

You can buy the Z 560 on ebay for 60.00    (http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Replacement-THX-z560-Surround-Sound-Satellite-Speakers-z560-Subwoofer-/380945138373?pt=US_Computer_Speakers&hash=item58b21982c5) hope this helps you ! I would send them a email due to the fact it says (for parts or not working.) And ask if sub works before buying.

If I needed speakers, I would get the Logitech Z906. I think you will be satisfied with those.

Don't know if this brand is available at US, but Edifier S550 Encore is a really good sound system.

Logitechs are nice for average consumers... but for bassheads and SQ freaks like me, go with home theater. You will not regret it. I grew out of computer speakers many years ago, when they used to make better ones!

Re: I need new PC speakers 2014/07/25 08:23:04 (permalink)
Home theater speakers hooked up to the pc?  That means I will need a home theater receiver as well, right?  I hook up my the receiver to my pc via optical?  I currently have the X79 Dark and am using the standard audio ports, would I need a sound card to get better audio?

I currently am using an old sony receiver and speakers on my HTPC, but its an old receiver so I have a few issues via optical sound through my creative sound card.  I am not sure what the issue is but wouldn't the sounds card and receiver both be decoding sound?

My experience with receivers hooked up to a PC is that they are not as user friendly as a PC speaker system.  I would like nice sound, but also dont want to be running into pc to receiver issues.

My home theater system that I currently use for my tv (currently this system is sitting in a box because I am waiting for the P series Vizio to be released) is:

For the best sound go with Yamaha. if your budget doesn't allow it then go with the Logitech.

I linked to Yamaha home theater systems which do indeed include receivers.  You can hook it up via optical, though if they have HDMI then your best bet is probably to connect with HDMI and choose 5.1 surround in Windows.

HDMI through the GPU to the receiver?

Yup that should do the trick, though not all receivers have HDMI input.

I loved my Klipsch 5.1s but they have a poor record of failing  early.  I had it repaired once, but then it happened again.  Finally went out and got the Logitech's that Rush recommended (in the 5.1 version) and I have been pretty happy with them.

It is worth noting that in general, the quality of active speakers has declined over the years.  Newer Logitechs don't hold a candle to the older ones from what I've read.
