Got a new EVGA GTX 750 Ti w/ACX cooler last Friday, and it's a HUGE upgrade considering I was using a reference GT 545 which came with my refurbished Alienware X51. All my games run at medium to high settings with great framerates. But the one thing I can't do is enable Adaptive Vsync in the NVIDIA control panel. I saw an older forum by blazeroni stating the same issue with a GTX 670 FTW, which helped me a little bit, but didn't exactly tell me how to fix this issue. I want to be able to take advantage of Adaptive Vsync along with the other great features available on this video card. Please help! Thx :)

Welcome to the forums..Yes, a GTX 750 Ti supports Adaptive Vsync, with conditions..You must be running Windows Vista or later..You must be using a GeForce R300 (301.10 I believe) or later driver..See
Vertical sync in the Control Panel Users Guide, Table 3.1 NVIDIA Control Panel Features..My guess is that you're still on Windows XP, yes?

Nope, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. My driver is 337.88.

I would try a Custom (Advanced) clean install of the driver..Alternatively/additionally you could try Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), then install the driver.

What I found out is that some Dell/Alienware desktop systems (incl. X51) use Nvidia’s Optimus Technology (hybrid/switchable graphics) and that's why Adaptive Vsync (and some other settings) isn't an option..From searching information on this for a little while, you need to disable or get rid of the pre-installed Nvidia Optimus Technology somehow..There may be more/better ways to do this if you search more about it, perhaps at Alienware Forum, but here's a few things I gleaned from some sources..Search "disable optimus" and see what you get.

- Go into the BIOS video configuration section and enable discrete graphics and disable Optimus if there are options.
- Uninstall the Intel HD/Onboard graphics driver. - Install/run the NVIDIA Optimus Test Tool, see Troubleshooting (link).
- Go to NVIDIA Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings and make configuration changes to manually assign games to use only the GTX 750 and manually set Adaptive Vsync (link)..Search more on YouTube about NVIDIA Optimus.
- Enable Adaptive Vsync using Nvidia Inspector (link).
- Reinstall Windows (not the one that came with your Dell/Alienware recovery disk).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've looked up about NVIDIA GPUs, the Optimus is only applied to the Notebook versions of certain GeForce GPUs to disable discrete graphics when they aren't needed. My Alienware X51 does not have anything like that. But NVIDIA Inspector didn't show me an obvious option to enable Adaptive V-sync. Also, how do I uninstall Intel HD driver while using discrete graphics? Thanks.

Normally yes, Optimus is used in laptop/notebook..Just going by what I read about it..They say it's in X51's..That's about all I can tell you about it other than what I posted above and that Dell/Alienware does some strange stuff sometimes.

"Alienware’s OEM muscle is apparent in the X51’s use of Nvidia’s Optimus technology" (link)

"I have had a reply from Nivida and they basicly say that the drivers do not support Nivida optimus and the adaptive vsync option on the alienware x51" (link)

I believe you need to select your Nvidia GPU in the 'Preferred Grpahics Processor' versus using the 'Auto Select'.

EVGA X99 FTWK / i7 6850K @ 4.5ghz / RTX 3080Ti FTW Ultra / 32GB Corsair LPX 3600mhz / Samsung 850Pro 256GB / Be Quiet BN516 Straight Power 12-1000w 80 Plus Platinum / Window 10 Pro

I've confirmed that graphics is set to Discrete in boot setup utility, and that "High-performance Nvidia Processor" is selected. Yet I still don't get the Adaptive Vsync option. If the Optimus technology is really in the X51, then it's probably part of the H61 chipset motherboard. However, I do see a changeable option in Nvidia Inspector related to Optimus (See photo). Should I change that part at all?

Didn't work. Man I've had a lot of PC trouble lately, Adaptive V-sync not easily available, computer won't auto-sleep even with power management settings set, and metro printing charm all of a sudden isn't working, the list goes on. My next desktop is probably going to be a home custom build instead of the next X51 :P It's honestly stupid to include Optimus if the computer isn't a laptop, because it's not battery powered. Anyways, I appreciate what advice I've been given, but issues like this have taken up hours of my day since I got the new card :S. Thanks though. Maybe if I talk with a Dell tech..

Yeah, I feel your pain..It's a big issue with those X51's if you search around various websites/forums..I read that an old driver might fix it, i'm talkin' late 200/very early 300 series drivers, but what's the point in that..I searched a lot for a solution and i'm pretty much convinced that you could only solve the issue if you take a look at the "Best solution" here..Dell/Alienware machines work ok if you leave them alone "as is", but changing/adding things is where the problem lies..Good luck.

Well, there's always backing up my data then doing a clean OS install to fix the other issues. But in the long run, since I feel compelled to take advantage of the ability to swap parts without software/firmware incompatibility in pre-builts, I should build my own desktop within like 2 years. EVGA's Hadron air and hydro cases look like interesting candidates. They aren't too much bigger than the X51, probably way better cooling overall, and you can see inside :). But I like that the X51 can be used in horizontal position too. I will still do some upgrades with my current machine (cpu and fans/coolers) which would increase the value for me to sell it later. Anyways, I'll just stick with what I've got.
