Is KitKat working OK now or does it still have issues?  I've been holding off allowing any more updates past 4.3 until I can see that updating won't cause new problems.  I see that I have a Tegra OTA ROM update available, but am not selecting it because there is no going back once I tap on it.  No knowing if that will force an update to KitKat, I've been hesitant to let any more updates through.  I do have a 32GB MicroSD card installed as well and read that that was one of the issues with KitKat.  I'm in no hurry though as 4.3 is working very well so far.

The SD issue is related to Android KK itself, not anything Nvidia has done, and yes, it can be a real pain. There are fixes available for rooted users, and Nvidia has made things a little better through their own modifications to Android, but it is a pain. On the other hand, KK is far better at working on a device with only 1GB of RAM... I remember after the 4.3 update that I was beyond frustrated with my tablet as it was just unbearably slow, but ever since KK it's been much better. It's all just a matter of what priorities fit into your usage patterns.

I've noted a couple users above report that SD card use works, but I'm questioning that on stock OTA update 2.4.  I had a 64 gb card formatted fat32 that worked great through Android 4.3.  I got excited when this update said it fixed SD card issues.  No matter what I did - and I tried reformatting the card a few times - I couldn't properly write or transfer apps to the SD card.  After downloading big games, I'd try transferring them to the SD card, and while it appeared successful - clicking the game reported that it was not actually installed.  I tried this with Asphalt 8 and Nova 3 specifically.

After several days of trying this, I gave up - and decided to root the tablet.  It's gotten next to no use ever since the 4.4 update.  I used the supertool from the XDA forums, and once again the memory card is working as I expected.  I realize I've voided my warranty, but it's worth it to actually use the tablet as advertized.

With the latest official update, I really could only use the memory card to read media from.  With the root and SD card fix from the supertool, everything seems to be working flawlessly after a couple days.

i dont understand how your sd cards are not working and you need rooting?
i can watch films off the sd card, play music and copy data from sd to tablet memory using es file explorer.
it may not be an issue with the tablet and just user error.

Yes, and you've listed exactly everything that you *can* do with it... it's changing or deleting files on the SD card or adding files to it that won't work outside of moving the app to SD, which will still sorta work. USB drives have the same issue as well. This is because of Android 4.4, not our tablets... Google for some reason decided to change this behavior in KitKat. Please do a little research before you go spouting off that it's user error... this is a widely known issue that affects the entire Android ecosystem.

Ha ha ha.  I was going to reply but I couldn't say it better than rchrdcrg.  And moving apps to the SD card didn't work with a lot of large games, so I gave up and decided to root.

Hearing that we'll get the next version of Android (L) made me think twice about rooting - but then again, this may still be busted there.  It kind of takes the joy out of having a memory card in the new Nvidia Shield devices.

I'd be happy sticking with 4.3, but once I made the mistake of upgrading to 4.4 - rooting was my only option.
