Purchased a GTX780SC before doing homework so I'm now the proud owner of a 500$ paperweight. Got an h8-1260t from HP with IPISB-CH2 motherboard (Form Factor uATX, socket type LGA 1155), whose most recent BIOS doesn't support my investment. HP has no intention of updating it, either. I spent a fair amount of irretrievable currency on this device (credit card points, gift card, etc.) so I guess I am in the market for a new mobo. Processor is an i7-2600 (Sandybridge) 3.8 GHz. RAM is 8GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM.

Has anyone else ever run into a problem like this? Does anyone have suggestions for purchases? Brands to avoid? Models that should be compatible? Any other considerations to take into account to avoid further headaches and expenditures? Thank you in advance.

Yes, it has been a problem for some users.  It is due to an incompatibility with your motherboard BIOS.  That is main issue with lots of the prebuilt systems from HP, Dell, Acer, etc.  Sometimes they make an updated BIOS, but most times not, like you are experiencing.

As far as motherboard, I assume you are going to reuse your CPU, so you will need to keep the same 1155 socket obviously.  Everyone has their favorite brands, you probably can't go wrong with most of them.  I personally don't care for Gigabyte, but that is just my preference and I remember some people having BIOS issues with 700 series cards as well with that brand.  MSI, Asus, AsRock, all are decent.

One other component to check would be your power supply.  Make sure it is capable and sized for the new system.  Most OEM power supplies are lower quality and may not be up to the task of a higher end card such as your 780.  I would recommend looking into replacing with a quality 600W minimum one, unless you are planning on more upgrades such as adding another video card at some point, then probably bump up to 750-800W minimum.

Hope this helps, post back if you need any more assistance.  Good luck!

Thanks a lot; I will check those brands out for sure.

I ditched the PSU it shipped with when I bought a GTX560 a few years ago; not sure of brand/model but I believe it's 650W. I will have to check next time I open up the case.

uATX is making this a royal pain 'cause I am a noob, but I found an ASUS on Amazon that I think should be compatible with regard to socket, form factor, and being able to interact with the RAM the desktop shipped with. It's model P8B75-M/CSM. Can't post link due to site limitations. Thew newest BIOS are dated from this year, so hopefully that is a good sign in terms of compatibility with the graphics card and processor, and the price seems reasonable (68$).

I think that motherboard will work, but don't know for sure.  You might want to consider ditching the HP case and buy a larger case that would be able to use a more standard ATX board.  I think you would be happier in the long run.  But if you decide to go the route of swapping the motherboard, let us know how it goes.  Good luck!

Thanks again. Hopefully I can get this thing up and running soon... Gonna go with an ATX case and ASUS P8Z77-V LK.

Mobo installed and Windows crashes on startup even with newest BIOS flashed on mobo. Tried to do Startup Repair but it gets into a loop where it tells me to run Startup Repair (while it's already in progress). Can't do system restore because the OS is chipped to the original mobo. Now I get to run to the store and buy a copy of Windows 8.1 because non-upgrade version of Win7 starts at 400$. (Deleted for foul language)

Got Win8.1 (barf) up and running and drivers all updated. Time re-DL Steam library to see what this thing can really do.

Glad you got it working in.  Unfortunate you had to buy a new Windows license.  Those OEM licenses used by HP, etc..are usually tied to those machines and can't be reused as you found out.
