i built a computer eight years ago and i need to make some upgrades if they will accomplish my needs.  really don't want to buy a new computer.

reason for upgrading is my computer will not play videos from my gopro. not talking about editing them yet, just simple playback.

the gopro will go up to 1440p resolutions but mainly 1080p at 30fps is what we are talking.

i assumed it was my graphics card. stopped in my local tiger direct store to buy a new one and the guy told me that wasn't my problem. after i described my hardware he reminded me i had a eight year old computer which i had never thought about. time flies.

so i have a core 2 duo e6600
2GB DDR2 800 ram
geforce 7900 gs graphics card

if i jump to 8gb ddr2 pc28500 speed and snatch up a core 2 quad and keep the same graphics card will this be enough?
will you confirm that the jumpy playback of video files is not because i need a better gpu and is fact due to other hardware issues?
thanks.

robeward this may likely just be an issue having the right software to playback the file type that the gopro is recording at because your current card is capable of rendering 2560x1600 resolutions.

What sort of media player are you using to try and open the recordings?  Just to be sure as well, the format it records in is mp4, correct?
There are a myriad of media players available but stock Windows may not have the codecs necessary to play mp4's out of the box.

I suggest trying to play the gopro video files with VLC. I highly doubt that you have any hardware problems. I still have a side computer made from a e8400 and 4gb of ram.

As others have said, software is more likely the culprit than hardware.  As Erik asked, let us know what software you're trying, as that might help with figuring out what you need.  We can offer plenty of good recommendations for free software.

well i use VLC 99% of the time.  after the last quicktime update it stole the permissions so I was actually using quicktime.  i didn't have time to reset the permissions.  i will go back and see if it runs better with VLC.

the main thing i wanted to confirm was what i was told at the tiger direct store.  when playing a raw video file like this, is there really more work for the CPU than the GPU?  I had the general feeling that yall are saying; even though my computer is eight years old, it should be more than capable of playing an HD video.

Sometimes, it depends on the software you use for watching videos.  VLC can use hardware acceleration on video cards, as can several other programs.  However, not all video playing software can utilize the video card for better performance or features while watching.  Sometimes hardware acceleration can also cause some problems with video cards, and the system becomes smooth after disabling it.  If hardware acceleration isn't being used, the CPU will be utilized more than the video card.  Ultimately, both will be used.

I wouldn't worry about your hardware at this point.  There's a big difference between not playing a certain type of file and not playing a certain file well.  If you're running into problems with the former, then it's probably just a software/application issue, possibly a codec issue.  If it's the latter, then it's time to start considering an upgrade.

good old VLC saved the day.  plays smooth as silk.

i would have thought quicktime would have been ok since it is an apple product but obviously not.

on the bright side i discovered i have a great setup for overclocking so i will be playing around with that.

    thanks for the help
