Hi,

I hope someone can help me, I've been having this issue ever since building this computer in November 2011  (hard to believe it's been that long!).  Every time I reset or turn off and back on my computer I lose my internet connection.  Took forever figuring out it wasn't my router or my cable modem because at first I would reset them and sometimes the internet connection would come back on, sometimes it wouldn't.  I just kept resetting them until it worked.

So early on I tried disabling one of my Dual LAN ports on a suggestion from a techie friend... but that didn't help.  Usually I just leave my computer running 24/7 so it isn't a problem.

Anyhow something seemed to happen recently in that resetting my router/modem didn't seem to help.  Messing around with it further I noticed that my spare computer wasn't losing its internet so I realized it must be my computer after all.

SO, now I've found that all I need to do is (to have both LAN ports enabled and) just swap the cable from my router to my other LAN port! It's easier than resetting my modem and router, but it's back and forth with the cable on each reset.  back and forth, back and forth...  seems to work every time without fail this way.

I've even tried using both LAN ports LOL  this didn't really work either

All my drivers are up to date, windows update, firmware, everything I can think of is current.

I have a Linksys WRT120N, an older but reliable router.  Also have tried a newer model Kingston Router (can provide a model number if needed but it's packed away and I doubt it's my router at this point).

Sorry for being verbose, just trying to be thorough and provide all the necessary info the first time.

Thanks!

In the BIOS are the lan ports set to enabled instead of auto?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind.  I don't think that's the case for me tho, I've had this problem for some time before my current cpu or my overclocking.  Additionally, my OC is pretty tame for what's possible with my chip :)  I appreciate the help tho!

First of all, make sure your router has the latest firmware version:

    Firmware:
    06/28/2012
    Ver.1.0.07 (Build 02)     http://support.linksys.co...upport/routers/WRT120N

*Write down your original settings before you change the settings in the process below:

Also you could try doing the following if the firmware upgrade didn't work, and let me know if your Internet works correctly again:

    1) Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1  (that will open up the Router setup page.)

    2) Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your routers main/ basic setup page)

    3) Make the Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11.

    4) Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:

     a) Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 75
     b) Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
     c) Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2307

    Now check the connectivity status.

:D  thanks!  I hope so too.

Firmware is up to date on the router.  I'm not thinking it's the router, but not positive of course.  I have two computers on my network.  What originally clued me into changing LAN ports was the fact my second computer never loses connection.  This is what I feel dumb about, cause I've had the issue for the last couple of years and each time I lose it on my main computer I never thought to go check the other,  I was just assuming it was my router or my cable modem.  I'd reset them and sometimes reestablish connection, sometimes not tho.

This is why I ended up here, the manufacturer of my motherboard, thinking, hoping, that someone had a similar issue with dual LAN ports.

The only time I lose my connection is when resetting my computer.

Before discovering swapping my LAN ports would instantly restore my computers connection I was thinking it MUST be the router, I even have a newer Kingston router that I've tried, but still has the same issue.

And, again, unfortunately... I've tried lowering the MTU too.

When you've lost connection, perhaps try Control Panel (viewing by icons) -> Troubleshooting -> Network and Internet and from there you can run troubleshooting for Network Adapter and Internet Connections..Viewing by category = System and Security -> Find and fix problems -> Network and Internet -> Internet Connections or Network Adapter.

Or try the Microsoft Fix it Solution Center (link) for an automated solution/repair after you establish a connection..Windows -> Connect to the Internet or networks -> Internet connections or Networks.

Just a few thoughts here..Good luck.

thanks Bob, using the Find and Fix Internet Connections just results in a "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem" message.

and I'm not finding anything on the MS FixIt site  (sigh)

thank you tho, I really appreciate your help

It just occurred to me that had a Linksys router 3 or 4 years ago and the Linksys software gave me connection headaches and when I uninstalled it and let Windows handle it all and I found joy..If you're using Linksys software in Windows, maybe try losing it and see how it goes.

Not necessarily true..Those ports can and do act up/go bad..Just go buy a network card, wired or wireless, for 10 to 20 bones or so..You'll be happy again

You mean you have no open/accessible PCI slots, or the PCIe x1 or any of the PCIe x16 2.0 slots whatsoever?..All the slots are filled or blocked?..What I'm getting at is that even though a network card (or any card) has a PCIe x1 interface, it will still work perfectly fine in a PCIe x16 slot (as designed)..PCIe x16 slots aren't just for video cards like many people think..But if you have no slots at all available, a network card is indeed out of the question, unfortunately.

Alternatively, you can use a USB wireless network adapter (link) if you want/need to.

yeah... well... this is true,  EVERYTHING is taken up. no space whatsoever for anything. my two radeons and my audio card are pretty selfish.

can you believe... I've actually filled every single USB port as well including the front/top panel and the two extension usb ports on my g-19 keyboard.  I guess I could maybe look for an expansion Hub tho.  my computer is kinda nuts... I keep adding to it...  I LOVE it, it's a lot of fun... but it's about maxed out.

Wow, alrighty then, lol..You're even the 4-Port USB 2.0 Bracket that came with your mobo too?..Just trying to think of options, but a hub may be your only choice if you wanna go USB wireless or even USB-to-Ethernet adapter for wired..I know those LAN ports have been problematic for some ppl..Good luck.

you know, I don't remember getting the usb bracket with this motherboard...  hmmm...  probly did and just didn't use it, but yeah, all space is gone now anyhow.  my last slot was filled with a lighting kit controller lol  I'm kinda weird about 'it has to look good'  so a hub then would be the way to go.

I have a question tho, what IS the purpose of having two LAN ports anyhow?  I guess it has something to do with being able to be on two networks... but why would you want that?

When I plugged in both LANs to the same router it just caused issues, but I wonder if I could somehow make that work... this probly sounds stupid but I can't help think it when all I need to do to restore my internet is just swap my routers connection from one LAN port to the other.

Since it hasn't been mentioned in the thread:

    1) Have you tried a different network cable with the the X58 FTW3?

    2) What's the most recent network driver you've installed?  Where did you get it from?  The network drivers on the EVGA support page are quite outdated.  Grab the latest Realtek ones from here:

Thanks Jedi, I had the newest until the 24th of last month.... didn't expect there to be a new version as the last were pretty recent too.  either way I got the new ones but no love for me yeah, got them from realtek too.

also went on to try disabling one port in the bios (instead of just device manager), that didn't help either.

    I've tried different cables, yes.

    ----------

So, I like to tinker and get the most from my computer.  I'm pretty ok with tech and figuring things out, I built my last two computers... done a bit of overclocking too.  I've searched and read a bit about dual LANs, but I'm not getting it really...  could someone dumb it down for me?  two LAN ports is a benefit right?  since I'm not solving this problem directly maybe I can solve it indirectly-by using both ports.  I have two computers on my network. and I have two routers (one unused and in the box).  Is there something cool I can do with what I have? what benefits might there be?

    Thanks you guys! :)
