I have Verizon, and they charge for AV.  Comcast used to give McAfee.  Right now, I use Trend Micro Titanium AND Malwarebytes Premium   They work fine together and seem to keep my machine clean.  First and foremost...safe browsing and keeping an eye on email...

I haven't used any AV software for a couple years now and no problems so far.  I just keep my internet usage as clean as possible.

Use a mac. (waiting to get flamed....)

There are viruses for that now too.

Anyway, I use ESET, never had a problem so no reason to switch off of it.

Yeah, but it is like 3 viruses total on a MAC! Just have to give credit where credit is due. I do most of my surfing on a mac anyway. I can accidentally go to a real bad booty site and still don't have to worry! That being said I do not use AV on my PC, when I did I used Avast, but that software became like a virus itself! The occasional Malwarebytes scan works fine and as everyone else said, above all - surf smart.

I have "Charter"  and was wondering if anyone tried the Charter Security Suite?  and if so, how well did it work?

PC Matic rips MS W8 and claims it will protect WinXP users even though MS no longer supports it.

IMO Anti Virus is the biggest Virus ever created. Its purpose is to gather money, infect every system on the face of the earth, and bog down your system. Mabe im weird but i have no problem doing a fresh OS Install if i ever get a virus which has not happened in at least a decade.

First off, virus are discreet, guess who does not know they have one? you. Cause surprise surprise, they don't want you to notice them.
Second, AVs do not bog down your system in any perceivable way (at least not know, you have that argument 10 years ago)
Third a fresh install every time is a huge massive waste of time all the files you lose, all the programs you have to re download.
Fourth, anyone, I mean anyone who thinks common sense prevents you from getting virus, has NOT ONE OUNCE of common sense. Or at least has no knowledge of internet safety.
Fifth, many of the best AV's are free.

I stopped reading the article when I saw that Norton and Bitdefender were top picks.

Both are overpriced, don't give any more protection than a free solution and slow down your PC in ways you've never thought possible.

No thank you.
I'll just not surf the internet like a complete idiot and save my money.

Besides, this crap won't stop ZeroAccess, hell it won't even stop ransomware that's been out for a year.
Norton and Bitdefender are whack.

Diligent web-surfing and free AV solutions are the way to go.

Price was not a factor in rating.
When was the last time you used norton?
Ill give you a hint, Applications change version to version.
That thing is one of the fastest AV's around, and considering the criteria for ratings.... Uhm they do protect better then most free.
Also Norton is free for any Comcast customer.

Edit: also mcaffe, again the application is not the same one it was 10 years ago, you could agrue that it was (Deleted for language) 10 years ago, not so much today.

I'm not going to indulge you, as to what I do on a daily basis, however I will give you this.

Most issues that I come across, have to do with or are caused by, a malfunctioning/damaged or otherwise deemed "operational" popular AV software installation of one flavor or another.
In my experience, the people who paid for a "premium" AV software, did not get any more protection than the user utilizing a free AV software.

I'll tell you why.

People who pay for the "premium" or "full" version, usually have a false sense of security, and their browsing and download habits are ridiculous and put them at 24/7 risk of infection
People who use free AV software are people who are confident enough in their browsing habits to A) not need to pay for "better" protection, B) know the risks of certain activities online

My ISP gives out Bitdefender 2014 free to all customers, it is one of the worst AV programs I have ever seen, second only to Norton.
Installation/uninstallation/reinstallation issues, random dll errors, randomly blocks internet connectivity to browsers, slows down PCs and eats memory, although it's still an improvement over the previous versions.
Even more alarming, the worst infections pass right through Bitdefender (and Norton) while a simple malwarebytes or Roguekiller scan will reveal BLVALUEZeroAccess in a matter of seconds.

The most heavily infected PC's are 9 times out of 10 using Bitdefender or some form of Norton to "secure" their PC.

At the end of the day, it comes down to the user, not the AV software.
This I can stand behind 100%.

You can sit there and tell me how I'm wrong and it won't make a difference in my opinion which is weighted on extensive first hand experience with all AV software under the sun.

anecdotal the best kind of evidence.
Remember that time when they found computers with virus more likely ran IE then other browsers?

It wasnt because IE was bad, it was because of the type of user that only ran IE.

Just like you said it comes down to the user, so saying Norton is bad when every single metric of testing shows it is one of the very best out there. It's like saying a 7970 runs games better then a 780 ti because of a few cases that it does.
Your puting the AV at fault for costing money rather then the user, and then saying its the user fault at the end. But you still have a hatred of norton/bitdefender because of the users. It makes no sence

I think you may have missed the point

It doesn't matter what the best AV is.
Thus making the review irrelevant.

Because people have been indoctrinated into thinking that a Premium or Paid AV solution is better than a free one

Which is not the case, and this falsehood is exactly what this kind of review perpetuates.

You don't need Bitdefender or Norton or McAfee.
You need to visit safe websites and practice safe browsing habits to lessen your exposure to ZeroAccess, random Trojans and other rootkits.

It doesn't matter if you have Bitdefender ULTIMATE MEGA EDITION or Norton CAPTAIN AMERICA SECURITY.
You will get a virus if you aren't careful. Thus negating this reviews findings and the perceived need for a paid AV solution to protect your PC better.

Being paid or not is 100% irreverent to the article. It was not in their rating criteria.

They found Norton and bitdeffender to be among the best, which happened to be paid, and they found a few other paid AVs that were among the worst if you looked at the rest of it.

The best way to get a virus in the old days was to indiscriminately download as much as you could from Napster. It was akin to picking up every hitchhiker you see in the worst part of town......something bad was just waiting to happen. People still have those terrible habits, and it is those people that will still get viruses regardless of protection.

I have faced such a problem. I did not know how to get rid of viruses that are purchased on the Internet. I had to take the computer for repair several times.
