I recently installed a GTX680 in my 2010 Mac Pro and suprised at the noise it makes. How do I know whether to be concerned? Performance is ok. Thanks!

    Hello,

Good afternoon, your card should be anywhere from 30-50 db more or less under load. If your unit is loud. You may want to remove the side panel off and have a fan blow in. To help rule out any air flow issues.

I downloaded a dB app for my iPhone but how would I discern GPU fan sound from Mac Pro fan sound to test?

Also, after investing $600 in a card, I seriously doubt I am going to remove the side and put a fan on it for several reasons, not least of all it;s a a room of average temperature, low humidity, air conditioned 24/7 and the Mac Pro sits right next to me so a fan would also be annoying. But thanks for the suggestion.

The fan test is designed to rule out poor computer case airflow as the cause. If the video card fan spins considerably slower with the side panel off and a fan blowing towards the open case, it means your computer case has bad airflow.

It is no indication of the quality of the video card.
