Folks,

I've been seeing a VERY annoying problem of late.

I'm using my system, all is normal, then it suddenly becomes unresponsive.

What I mean be that is that the screens are normal but there is no mouse cursor.
The POST code changes from the 2 digit temperature (around 47 or 48C) to 97 (which in the AMI BIOS POST code is "Control to Optional ROM")

I have no control of the system and have to do a 'hard' power down to regain functionality.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
I have not yet updated the BIOS to the A58 BIOS version yet.

Anybody have any clues what is going on and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Might be a ram issue?  I would run memtest to rule it out.

Two more pieces of relevant info about my SR-2 config:

The system has been fully operational for a couple of years now. So bent pins on a CPU is very unlikely.

The memory configured is Single Rank ECC memory. I'll run Memtest86 to be sure, but I would expect to see events in the error log if I was having Memory issues.

The '97' POST error does not occur during startup but while the system is in operation.

Does anyone know what the '97' message means coming from an SR-2 motherboard?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you have another power supply. These boards can have random issues should the psu be failing. You may want to test different parts in your computer as well. Perhaps  video card as well. Different usb ports keyboards and or ports. Prehaps even go as far as a bare bone test, testing just one cpu at a time, 1 stick of ram per cpu and nothing else attached.

I was hoping to get an idea of what code 97 may be related to.

The thought of having to pull the system apart is pretty daunting... Especially since the problem is very intermittent.

The PSW (eVGA Classified SR-2) and unfortunately I don't have a spare anywhere close to it's capacity.

The graphics board is also eVGA branded.

Anybody know what a '97' status on the ECP means during operation?

    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers!
