Hello All,

I have been thinking about upgrading my video card for the past few weeks and I have decided that I want to bight the bullet and move forward with the upgrade so I started hitting the research hard and now have a few questions that I need answered before I move forward.  First off I currently have an EVGA GTX 550 TI that has done me well but I'm running into some games that are pushing it to its limits.  I currently have a 550 watt power supply that I hope I won't have to replace.  I want to move up to the EVGA GTX 760 one of the requirements is the need for a 6 pin and 8 pin power connector.

My power supply doesn't have any 8 pin connectors.  I was looking at the image of the package contents and was wondering if the purpose of these connectors was to turn (2) 6 pin connectors into (1) 8 pin and (2) 4 pin connectors into (1) 6 pin?  If yes then I think I should be good to go.  Can anyone confirm?

My second question is about which GTX 760 should I get?  I have been looking at several online websites and it "Appears" that the mainstream choice has been to go with the 2 gig Ram option. Looking at the price comparison it doesn't look like an unreasonable jump to go to the 4 gig option.  Seeing that most people are going with the 2 gig option I wonder if it is worth it or even necessary?  Can anybody advise on this?  I know it won't make the card any faster but one of the reasons I need the upgrade is because the I'm maxing out my ram usage on my 1 gig and would hate to think that an extra 50 bucks could help prevent maxing out 2 gigs in the near future?

Anyway any help/info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You can use the adapter cables for the card as you were wondering.  As far as the PSU, you're borderline.  You don't specify what your actual PSU is (model).  Total watt output is important, but the +12v rail output from your PSU is also very important.

    Here's the spec sheet for the 760.  500W min with 30A on the +12v rail. >> http://www.evga.com/products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=27d98bf3-2d6c-4b87-aea1-db5d11a9c64c

As far as 2GB vs 4GB, if you plan on keeping the card awhile and the extra dollars aren't a deal breaker, I'd go with the 4GB model.

Your PSU is borderline, but will be enough.  I wouldn't OC anything.  Neither +12v output meets EVGA's min spec, but those are a bit conservative.  If you can, I would run your 8 pin cable off the 28A +12v rail and your 6 pin off the 20A rail to split the power between the two rails.

If it were me, at some point fairly soon, I would pick up a good quality single rail PSU.  Something like a 600 - 650W unit with more than 30A on the +12v rail.  Especially if you plan on doing any type of OC'ing at all.  Seasonic, EVGA, Corsair, to name a few have good quality units.

Thanks for the info.  I was looking at the Corsair 850 as a possible upgrade.  Right now Tiger direct has them on sale for I think 149.00.  I'm Kind of going through and upgrading all of my peripherals and then somewhere down the line I will upgrade my Mobo and processor.  I'm not really looking to do any overclocking at the moment I'm just focusing on getting rid of the week links of my current system.  Again Thank you for your help.

NP, happy to help.  That Corsair will give you plenty of headroom in case you do any OC'ing or adding on to your system.  I always prefer having more than enough power.  You just never know what you might want to do a year from now...

Make sure whichever power supply you choose is a single 12v rail design. Also Haswell certified is a good thing to have. And if you can afford it go with a modular cable design (makes life a bit easier =p).

This is a pretty good under $100 short list - http://www.newegg.com/Pro...rder=PRICE&Pagesize=20

Yes but why spend the extra cash on the 4gb? The 760 doesnt have the processi g power to reach that kinda of vram usage. Either way yes do a fresh driver install.

Ah ok well if you have it now you might as well use it. Do a complete driver install fresh. Remove old ones and install new ones.

Uninstall your current drivers using Nvidia's uninstaller in Add/Remove Programs (or whatever Microsoft is calling that Control Panel applet these days).  Then install the newest drivers with the remove all previous settings (or whatever nvidia calls it) checkbox checked.  All in all you'll probably end up restarting 3 times.

Side note: The only things you need with the drivers are the Display Driver (Display Driver includes NVControl Panel), HDMI Audio driver and then PhysX.  The other stuff is optional.

Hello you can use those adapters but I personally would not suggest using them for a long time. I would suggest getting a new power supply something around 650-750w that is Silver or preferably Gold rated at 80% efficiency. I say this because you want something that is good stable and is not going to kill your pc later on down the road if the capacitors and components inside degrade too fast. Brands of PSU's I would go with XFX, Seasonic, Corsair, or even EVGA "their lower watt 80% Gold efficiency psu's do make some noise due to its fan." This is for one gpu for two I would stick with a 1000w quality  unit. But reading your post seems like your already taken care of and sporting a very nice setup. Congrats man=)

Yeah my next project is going to be a new case. I need something bigger. It took a lot of work to get everything to fit in this case. I've never replaced a case before but then I've never replaced a power supply before so I'm sure I can handle it.

I personally would go with Corsair for a case, they are much higher quality and more sturdy than todays CM cases, cost about the same for more. If you want something that is around 100 USD that offers the best air cooling possible, something sturdy not covered in plastic, you may want to take a look at the Corsair C70 Vengeance gaming cases.

Cooler Master for Full towers, or Corsair for Mid size towers. Personally the full towers give you better airflow. Full towers are the way to go as the hardware of today are larger.

So after getting the card installed I played some DayZ and this time around I didn't get kicked out of the game after 10 minutes of playing.  I was pretty pleased with that outcome so I bought Arma III last night I got about an hours worth of playing time after the download completed before I called it a night.  While I was playing Arma III i looked over at My Video card monitoring widget on my other screen and saw that I was utilizing over 3 gigs of Ram.  That being said I'm glad I went with the 4 gig card since these are the Stile of games that I've been getting into.  Thanks for the help from all of you.
