ok. so i finally got my rig up and running down in the dining room. i haven't updated windows 7 or anything else yet (no internet down there), but i installed all the drivers, utilities etc... for the mobo, video card and everything else. also, i overclocked my 3930k to 4.2 with a one click OC in the BIOS, was stable but will redo that later for lower voltages.

so here's my rig's specs:
motherboard - asrock x79 extreme6
i7 3930k
noctua nh-u12s
ram - g.skill 1600mhz (4x4) (cas 8) F3-12800CL8Q-16GBZH
video card - evga titan black superclocked
hard drive - western digital velociraptor 500gb
power supply - seasonic x-850
case - cooler master haf xb evo
monitor - asus vw246h 24 inch (1920x1080 @ 60hz)

and here are my heaven 4.0 benchmarks below. please tell me if they are bad, average, good or great etc... and what i can do to tweak the settings (without cheating) to get a better score.

1st run

4.2ghz OC - 3930k
titan black sc - not OC'd

fps - 63.6
score - 1601
min fps - 23.9
max fps - 132.1

render - direct3d11
mode - 1920x1080 8xaa fullscreen
preset - custom
quality - ultra
tessellation - extreme

--------------------------------------

2nd run (first attempt at video card OC - didn't push it)

4.2ghz OC - 3930k

titan black sc - OC'd
power target - 106%
temp target - 95%
+103 gpu
+410 memory

fps - 69.0
score - 1737
min fps - 22.2
max fps -144.9

render - direct3d11
mode - 1920x1080 8xaa fullscreen
preset - custom
quality - ultra
tessellation - extreme
----------------------------------------

so. i'm not sure if these scores are good, bad or average. i don't think i pushed the video card very hard with the OC, i had the fan at 100% speed and it barely went over 60c.

ps - pls tell me how to post the screenshots i took. i have no idea how to post them on these forums. it looks like they are in a google webpage format.

These numbers appear to be in line for this card with these settings.

how much higher can i expect to go with the gpu and memory OC? or is that just about right and i should probably not go further?

i ask because i haven't oc'd anything since my old old rig (2005-6) - abit nf7s with bfg 6800 gs 256 mb video card.

    Your score:
    1st run

    4.2ghz OC - 3930k
titan black sc - not OC'd

    fps - 63.6
    score - 1601
    min fps - 23.9
    max fps - 132.1

My score was recorded using Shadowplay with everything in my signature at stock speeds. I do gain about 3 frames per second when I'm not recording which puts it where your stock score is.

What does your video card boost clock to when your gaming or running a benchmark? You can use EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner and check to see where your card will boost to. My card will boost to 1150 MHz automatically.

Without knowing what your boost speeds are in this benchmark, I would say that your scores are good. You will notice that I'm using exactly the same settings as you in Heaven.

thanks! appreciate the feedback. it's kinda hard to find single card benchmark scores. i've been looking around the internet and most people are either using 2 in sli or a card that's that's not a good comparison because it's an older card.

I'm kinda strange like that. I like to run single video cards and I also like to run everything at stock speeds. Most of my friends watercool and or overclock like crazy.

    hey, thanks for the reply!

yeah, i looked once real quick and noticed it was boosting to about 1/4th the way over the 1200 mark. it kinda freaked me out because i'm not sure how many mhz i can add to both the core clock and memory speeds.

also, before i realized i could adjust the fan speed (don't laugh LOL) i touched the front of the video card and then also the top of it just to the left of where the GEFORCE LED is, and it was BLAZING HOT! i was like daaaaaamn!? is it supposed to run that hot??! that was scary... it was so hot i couldn't keep my finger on it for even 1 second. the cards temp was at 82c, and i was running about 3 or 4 continuous loops of valley. not sure if that is normal or too hot, but it makes me want to keep that fan running fast. i hope heavy/demanding games don't heat the card up like heaven and valley does.

yeah, i'm the same way. i like one card only. anything more is just way too much to deal with IMO. i ran my old nf7s with an athlon xp 3200+ at stock for oh man a looong time, like 8-9 years.

Let me know what games you are playing if you don't mind. I have used Shadowplay to record some basic gameplay videos of Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4 all with fraps running. See I'm looking at how much my older motherboard and CPU is holding me back if any.

I would say running at 82C at auto fan speeds with little to no overclock is normal. Most people here will probably say to make an adjusted fan curve in Precision to keep your gpu temps below 70C.

But with Precision you can increase the temp target to 75C or so, this way your card won't start to downclock until it hits that temp. I'm lucky as my card will run about 65-67C with auto fan controls at 1150 MHz which is automatically overclocked from the manufacture.

It's up to you though. I don't think 82C is a big deal.

i don't have it hooked up to the internet yet, so can't really give examples of how good games play (fps/performance wise) yet. i just finished building it downstairs in the dining room and am waiting on a computer stand to get delivered before i move it to my room, but i have a ton of games on steam and origin.

what fan speed do you run your 780 ti on to get to run at around 65c-70c? i'm guessing around 50-60% ?

as for the games i will be playing:
    far cry 3
    skyrim super heavy ENB modded
    bioshock infinite
    alan wake
battlefield 4 or cod ghosts - probably both.
    crysis 3
    civ 5
    tomb raider (2013)
    crysis 2
    crysis warhead
    torchlight 2
some WoW (to hang out with old friends)
    dirt 3 complete edition
will be getting watchdogs and all the killer new games that come out.
    etc...

too many games to name. i have so many, i can't name them all without writing a book. but i'm going to try and run everything maxed out at 1080p and then when the new asus rog g sync monitor comes out, i'll probably get one of those to run at 1440p.

I don't know what my fan speed percentages are. I will have to check when I get my card back from an RMA.

I sent my card in for an RMA because after leaving Heaven 4.0 running overnight or having Crysis 3 run overnight without me playing for 8 hours or so, when I wake up my frame rates would have dropped in half. For example if I was running 60 plus fps in Heaven, 8 hours later when I woke up it would be running about 30 fps. The temps would still be at 65C and still boosting to 1150 MHz all night long.

I will get my card back this Monday.

Gigabyte found no issues with the card. When I get it I'm going to have to some more testing to see why this happens. I guess I don't have to run benchmark programs or games overnight anymore. I like to know that my system is stable.

also, i wanted to add that when i set the fan to 100% it never goes above 62c and that was even when it was overclocked and looping valley for about 15 minutes. but it;s just too loud to be any fun.

i think i can get it to stay at about 70c with fan speed set at 70 temp and 50% fan speed. it seemed to hover at around 70c when i made that to be my pre set precision fan speed setting.

Sounds like your going to have some fun with that card, And that a really awesome. You should oc it also try benching with 3dmark..

well, that's what i'm trying to figure out. i'm looking for input from people that may have an overclocked titan, titan black, a 780 or 780 ti. i'm trying to figure out what is too much of an overclock and what is good. i used to use riva tuner and/or powerstrip waaaay back in the day when i had an evga ti 4200 but i don't want to push the card far enough to see artifacts. a $1000 video card + artifacts is a no go for me LOL!

    so my first attempt was:

    power target - 106%
    temp target - 95%
    +103 gpu
    +410 memory

    fps - 69.0
    score - 1737
    min fps - 22.2
    max fps -144.9

i'm trying to figure out how much further than +103 on the gpu is acceptable and how far i can go above +400 with the vram.

BTW - gratz on the rig you got there, that thing is a BEAST! I LIKE IT!

I always follow a set formula when OCing. Memory first, then CPU and finally the VGA. And with VGA I find the memory max first, then the core max and then drop them both by 100Mhz when combining their OC.

ok thanks for the tip! i will keep that in mind.

do you keep your video card OC'd all the time, just when a demanding game needs it, or just when benchmarking only? what is your card OC'd to, if you know off hand?

i'm definitely going to lower the vcore voltage on my 3930k. i did a quick one click OC in the BIOS and it put it to 1.3 something and it was fine for just a few benchmarks, but i was reading OC for 3930k on various overclocker forums and they all seem to say that a 4.2 OC should be stable at around a low 1.2xx volts.

I only oc my cards when ever I bench, with normal gaming on a single monitor there's no real need to overclock especially with a titan.

    That's a really good score 1600.  I get 1500 with same application.

    awesome good news! thanks man!

what kind of games do you play and what fps do you get at ultra settings? i'm thinking if i use just 2-4 AA at 1080p and 1440p that i won't notice the jaggies enough to warrant turning the AA being turned up higher.

my computer stand hasn't been delivered yet, and i can't set up my rig in my room, it's driving me crazy!

i have some pics but i don't know how to post them using the forums... LOL!

help me post some rig pics and some heaven and valley benchmark screenshots, i guess i'm too dumb to figure out how - getting old....

ps - it's generic air cooled; nothing mind blowing. it's definitely nice, but it's also not a water cooled "beastmaster" like most of the peoples rigs on here.

yes... i hear you loud and clear. although this card (titan black) is like speedy gonzalez on 20 cans of caffeine energy boost beverage, it's just too hot and too loud. if i can't find an acceptable fan speed / noise level that will cool this beast to run continuously for 6-10 hours at a time without downclocking, i'm going to demand my money back or put it on ebay if they won't give me a refund. and this really sucks because i friking love this card!

the the gpu boost is just a stupid idea. it's the exact reason i never bought a 290x and is the exact same reason everyone hated the 290x. if i would have known it does the same thing as the 290x (and it does), i would have never even considered buying one.

also, i'm partially disabled/bedridden and can't stand up for more than an hour or two at a time and can hardly bend at the waist (broken vertebrae and muscle spasms). so i won't be able to do doing any kickass water cooling. it sucks man... straight sucks. i love those watercooled rigs you guys show off, awesome shiz! and pc has been my hobby since 1984 (apple IIe). my pc will be on a stand at the foot of my bed with extended usb cables for my mouse and keyboard. :(
