My PS3 died for the second time.  I fixed the YLOD once and only a couple months later it's doing it again.  I think it's time to replace it so I wanted your opinions.  I used my PS3 primarily for movies and streaming media, but my kids are getting older and starting to get into games.  So what would you guys recommend?

PS4, Xbox One, or HTPC?

If it was primarily for movies, I'd say HTPC.

Honestly, Kids would love PC gaming more than console gaming if their parents bought them a good one. My nephew ditched his Xbox 360 (Thank god, It happened before One/PS4) and he loves his Steam gaming collection :)

Also makes it much easier for me to get him b-day gift or Christmas gift. He really loves Steam cards ^_^. So think about an HTPC for movies and another gaming PC for your kids. :)

I agree with buying 2 separate things / for separate uses idea -  but if you must choose between your listed options =  PS4 is hands down the best all-in-one unit for  movies and gaming right now.
I don't own either new machine, but I have friends who own PS4's and XBone ...

They had a episode of Big Bang Theory on last night that was based on Sheldon trying to decide on which one to get.  Funny!

I have both and the PS4 is garbage it just sits here. The Xbox One on the other hand is the best thing to happen to console gaming ever.

Tweaked, If you choose is Xbox One, Good luck paying monthly just to watch netflix, lol :)

I would narrow my options to HTPC or PS4 at least if it's not going to be for gaming with friends.

Obviously you don't know many people with an Xbox one, Else it wouldn't be hard to choose.... I enjoyed my Ps3 for watching movies and gaming while it lasted (I got bored and came back to PC)

Get the Xbox One.  I know people with both and they all say they use the Xbox One and the PS4 just sits there.  I am getting the One in a couple of months.  Both are good consoles, but XBONE is the way to go IMO.

So two of you have now said that the PS4 just sits there.  Can you tell me why?

I think it is the game line up.  Titanfall is exclusive to XboxOne as is Forza 5, and both are played a lot by my friends.  Need for Speed Rivals is cross platform and is really good too.  For gaming it seems the Xbox One is where it is at.  As a mostly media centre then the PS4.....as I use my PS3 as a media hub mostly and play a lot more on my 360....it seems this paradigm will continue into this generation for whatever reason.  I can give you a better personal perspective once I actually own one though.

I would get the xbone, don't own either, but friends do and its what they prefer. I personally can't afford either one.
Now if any of you don't want the ps 4, send it my way, I would gladly use it.

I also have a better online experience on Xbox and now you have to pay to play online for PlayStation 4...

I decided to go with the Xbox One.  Took me most of the evening, but I got it set up.  So far I have only been able to watch something on Amazon Prime.  I still need to set up my Netflix account and download Titanfall.  I'll report back when I've had time to really play with it.

I have a Samsung 58C550 Plasma TV.  Looks like I need to do some calibration to my TV.  The Xbox One comes with a Calibration utility, so that's pretty cool.  I played a little Forza Motorsports 5 this morning.  Pretty fun.  I also got Titalfall, but it's a download so I need to download that still, and I got my kids the Lego Movie game.

Well so far I am really enjoying my Xbox One.  I especially love the voice commands.  It is so convenient when I am in the middle of something and my hands aren't free, to just tell the Xbox what to do.  I really enjoy Forza too.  Image quality on streaming TV shows is far superior to the PS3 I was using before.  Game graphics are a bit disappointing, but I knew that going in.  The only exception is Forza.  The cars look amazing.

If you like Forza (as I do), then you'll probably be blown away by Assetto Corsa and Project C.A.R.S.  Forza will be easier for your kids to play though.
