Yeah, should be easier on the proc, the 32gb kit I recommended was the kit I used on my Dark, so I know it is solid, but a bit less may very well help for a higher clock.

A Lower amount of Memory (3 x 2GB) Helped the CPU OC on a 980X when I was using My EVGA X58 Classified 4-Way SLI MB.
Time will only tell if my other Component updates I'm waiting on will result in better Performance.

Yeah makes sense, 4.2 was as high as I could get at 6x2 on my X58, got 4.5 for benching with 3x2.

I went with the 32gfb kit as I was doing some non clocking stuff on my board that will actually use memory, and I had a good experience with it, so I passed the link on.  It did get you this far :D

Looking forward to see where you can get it.

That's Cool, and I appreciate All the Help with the various New products when I returned to the Forums.
I did make some quick decisions based on what I read in Posts and Replies when I first went ahead and bought the components for my X79 Platform Rig build, But it has turned out to be Good Advice!

Don't Know how much noise it will produce until runmc Finishes building the Unit and Ships it to Me, But it shouldn't be much more than my 5,000 BTU Chiller! LOL!

Actually, I never have given much thought about the amount of noise My Rigs produce Now, Because Way back when I was Overclocking/Benching MB's, CPU's, and GPU's on Air Only with a multitude of High Speed Fans Screaming, It was MUCH Noisier!

That is a Very Correct Statement, It's Still just sounds like a couple of Refrigerators running side by side!

It will probably be a week or so before I will receive the New Phase Change, But in the meantime My other Two Rosewill Hercules 1600W PSU's are "Out for Delivery" Today and Finally I will be able to hook up each of the Four KPE's with it's Own dedicated 1600W Unit and continue my Testing.

Thanks Halo, runmc and I go a Long Way back in the Vapor Change Forums at Xtremesystems.

As Far as starting up the Cascade goes, It was originally Built/Loaded for a 3.2ES 478 socket CPU on an ASUS P4C800-E MB.
It would get down Below -100C with that System, But it would have to be completely Purged/Charged on the First Stage with R507 and Second Stage with R1150 (Ethylene) if I wanted to use it again, Not to Mention the Physical Size of it and How much additional Electrical Power Capacity it would need on TOP of my Current Power Loads........But, As You Know in this "Get it Colder" Forum, ANYTHING is Possible! LOL!

How long until you have to start chilling and clocking your breaker box to keep up ?

You can take the down time waiting for your SS to insulate the board and prep the cards for sub zero, dedicate the chiller to them and Get Those Colder too!

Subbed on the Phase thread as well very eager to see where you can go with this.

And I remember the old days of cooling too, my old Pelt system from 10+ years ago, and all those delta fans, im surprised my case then didn't hover, and it sounded like an Apache Gunship was landing in my comp room lol, can't see the SS Phase being any louder than my old chassis with iirc 4 Deltas.

LOL!, Yeah, My Household Breaker Panel is getting a work-out for Sure!

I Could go ahead and prep the KPE's for sub-zero temps, But there are a Few Obstacles with Kepler Graphics Cards that I didn't take into consideration........

The MB is already insulated for sub-zero phase change temps and so are the MB Waterblocks, But I have run into Nvidia's Kepler "Hardware Design Power Limit" as far as the KPE's go.

In TiN's Thread at Kingpincooling.com, He states in order to overcome the Power Limit in the Kepler Cards you would have to do "Power Limit Overide Surgery" to fool Nvidia's Hardware power limitation Circutry, Which will DEFINITELY VOID ALL WARRANTIES!

http://kingpincooling.com.../showthread.php?t=2539

I Think this is the reason my Cards are being Limited more or less to 1.35v Vgpu and top out at around 1400MHz on the GPU Core No matter HOW Much Power I supply them with.  If you apply more voltage than this usually the cards will just end up either Throttling, Crashing, or just Shutdown.

This is the Main Reason I have decided to use a Larger SS Phase Change to Increase the CPU Overclock instead of attempting to modify the Power Limitation Circuitry built into all Kepler based Graphic Cards.

I REALLY would Like to be able to Sell these 780 KPE's in the Future when the GTX 880's become available, So as Crazy as Everyone Thinks I am , I Don't see Myself wanting to perform any Hardware Mods on these, Voiding All the Warranties and Losing the Re-sale Values!

LOL!

Well hey if you wanna sell it at a discount ever.... ;)

Regarding the power limit, that is a huge pain. I'm surprised that actually exists on the KPE's, but perhaps that was how EVGA got around the Green Light program rules. (limiting power etc.)

Also I meant to ask, is this your primary 24/7 system or do you have another for that?

If I added up All the Time, $$$$ and Research I went through constructing that Cascade, I don't know how in the world was able to build it in the First Place!

According to TiN, The Hardware Mod is the ONLY way to circumvent Nvidia's Kepler Power Limiting Controls, But Nvidia could ALSO later on place Power safeguards into the Software Driver Versions themselves (Similar to what they did with the GTX 780 Classifieds by removing 4-Way SLI capabilities).

While I HAVE used this Present System for a few weeks for 24/7 (albeit at a Lower OC setting), I Mainly use Both an EVGA 759 X58 Classified running a 3.33GHz 980 CPU with an EVGA GTX 480 Card, and a DELL 9100 XPS Laptop with a 3.2GHz 478 socket CPU that are On ALL the Time.

PS........And No, The EVGA 759 and the DELL XPS are Not Water Cooled or Under Phase Change, Just Air Cooling!

And by "air" you are meaning some sort of cooled or chilled air, right?
You can't cool computers with ambient air, that's just crazy talk.....

Dave, You Know we All have to be a LITTLE bit Crazy to attempt the kind of things we do to a perfectly good computer system!

Re:Get It Colder II 2014/04/16 16:17:16 (permalink)
It Seems like every time I find myself sitting around idle waiting for a new component to arrive for my Benching Rig, I find that I tend to day-dream about what to do Next!

I have been going back and forth for quite a long time thinking (and talking) about whether I want to convert to an LN2 setup for both the Processor/Graphics cards, But the more I look into what is actually required/needed to make this a reality still makes me indecisive!

Recently I was looking into what it would cost to buy at least a 50 Liter Dewar just to store the LN2, plus How much LN2 would you use on a 4-Way SLI graphics + Processor Benching Rig and found out that on top of paying at least about $1K for the 50 Liter Dewar to store it (Not including the actual LN2 costs which at an Airgas outlet is around $1 per Liter), it would use between 25 to 50 Liters PER HOUR while benching with this System.

Granted, It is also possible instead of buying a 50 Liter Dewar, You COULD just rent a larger 160 Liter Dewar from wherever you buy the LN2 from at a much reduced cost and pay a monthly fee for using/filling it which would probably be more cost effective in long term usage.

Throw in the initial costs of four Tek-9 Slims and a Dragon F1 Dark CPU Pot (+ a 1-2L thermos and a cryogenic tube to get the LN2 into the thermos) at around $1.5K, Then for No apparent reason start worrying that in the event I actually DO get the System up and running correctly, What if something goes "Wrong"?

It's just about this time in my decision making process that I can't help but Start to wonder..........Is this Trip really Necessary?

BTW, Pertaining to the above Post, I forgot to add what I was told you should do AFTER you are done with a successful LN2 Benching Session.

Start by removing all the Insulation/Components and checking them and the MB for any signs of moisture damage, possibly even turning the whole still frozen MB with the components still attached upside down and allow it to drip-dry first, followed perhaps by a blow-dryer (or Oven?) to make sure no moisture is left in all the various component area crevasses so everything is dry and ready for the Next Benching Session.

Since My Rig is bolted down and partially Enclosed in a Semi-Case, It would take some time to remove and dry all the needed areas, Then re-installed and prep everything for another Benching Session.

It would probably be easier to just Do Away with the Case Altogether and put the whole System out in the Open or on a Benching Table..........which once again brings Me to the point of asking Myself Why Would I put Myself through all this trouble, Especially when I have Yet to receive My Larger SS Phase Change and get IT installed and working properly with my Present Chilled Water/Vapo Cooling Rig!

Decisions....Decisions.....Decisions.......Sometimes the Strain on the Brain is a Pain!

Well, I vote for LN2, this is a savings thing, think of the electric bill you will save on not running Phase and a chiller

As for the upside down thing, talk to Nateman, maybe you could automate it, mount your semi case to a motorized swing arm, Nateman can build it for you.  When you are done, one button and you're upsidedown.  My love of excess, building things and motorized gadgets is showing again LOL.

LOFLMAO!, If I have to resort to that scenario, I should just go ahead and get a Job working for Kingpincooling!

But I regress.......Trying to be serious Dave, I Know I would have to build a Completely New Open Benching Platform similar to the design that Vince uses to have the same accessability/features that are needed for an LN2 Cooling Rig.

Recently I have been talking to TiN and Gunslinger over at Kingpincooling.com about how to get started on LN2 Cooling, Who on top of giving me advice on what I'll need for components/supplies has also advised me that I should start out with a Single EVGA GTX 680 Classified that has an EVBot connector on the card (Hard to Find and Costly if you do manage to get one) before I even TRY to set up My 4-way SLI/CPU LN2 Rig I'm thinking of building, Just to get some experience on how everything will/should operate and the pitfalls I may encounter along the way.

Anyway, It's Definitely Not going to be something that will happen overnight for sure!
