No, you would either need Sandy Bridge-E (3820, 3930K, 3960X or 3970X) or Ivy Bridge-E (4820K, 4930K, or 4960X).

Hello
I need quick advice, which motherboard to choose x79 dark or rampage IV black edition?

IMO the DARK

I stick with EVGA for several reasons.

They are a small local company from the same County I live in.

They have superb customer services.

I can RMA and get back my equipment super fast since they are local.

The X79 Dark and X79 SLI are both great MB's. The Dark especially.

I was one of the lucky people who didn't have any major issues with the X79 SLI besides the USB 3.0 not working on boot every once in a while.

After the new team came in and redesigned the BIOS for the original x79 line ( same people that designed the DARK) the X79 sli became an even better MB. able to OC with lower vcore on the latest bios rev.

the Dark worked right out of the box with no issues for me. After a couple of quick bios updates the OC became really good.

I definitely vote for the Dark.  The RIVE Black is also a great board, with us you get great customer service, from what I hear there is a nifty BIOS guide for the Dark but in general it is a solid board, and I have seen nothing to complain about, plus there is an aftermarket waterblock set that works pretty well too.
Board sets up easy, works great with my 4930k, got a LOT of hardware on it, and it just works, plain and simple.

Great choice Balthazar73... I'm sure you will be happy with the board, and EVGA is a top notch company.

@dustingg:  That looks very sexy...

I've bought both boards... you can't go wrong with either.    My RIVBE has been very solid from the very beginning... plus the little things that I mentioned earlier is the reason why I'm sticking with it.   Downside to this board is all the EK blocks made for it.... makes me want to spend more money... LOL...
I like my , and I wasn't planning to watercool my mobo... but the  since it doesn't require any additional fittings.   I like to keep my tubing clean and simple, so the full board block is a great solution if I am considering watercooling my VRM/MOSFETs/Chipset.

Anyhow... I think both boards looks sexy...

Re: x79 dark or rampage IV black edition 2014/04/15 18:39:44 (permalink)
I am in a similar situation but the competing MB is an ASUS RIVE. Of the 4 RIVE that I have, one was bad and the RMA experience was less than pleasant, and I ended up losing quite a bit of money. There is no better customer service than EVGA, I will give you that. So do I take my chances and try another RIVE, or get a Dark? The RIVE when it works, it is flawless and I have ZERO compatibility issue with anything that I threw at it. The EVGA Dark from all the reviews and gripes, I just hope the latest 2.10 BIOS is finally stable. I won't know until I get my hands on it and test it out.

Anyway, I am looking to get either another RIVE or EVGA Dark, and I am leaning toward buying a Dark and getting the extended warranty because this is likely the last major build that I do

Well, I cannot speak for other peoples experiences, but I have no complaints with my Dark.  4930k, lots of drives, XMP picked up my 32gb kit, its been on 24/7 for a few weeks, ran some benches and stress tests, plain and simple, it just works.
Only **SLIGHT** oddity I saw, was with my camera (Nikon DSLR), I could not read the memory card from the USB port on my Razer BlackWidow, but it worked fine on the USB port on the mobo.  I ONLY associate this with this build as it worked 2 months ago on my X58.  But no problems with my 770's, or my X-Fi or anything else.

Is the board 100% perfect, of course not, nothing is, but I have zero buyers remorse for this board, it works great.  Nothing against the RIVE either, it's an excellent product, but with the Dark, you have our support.

Yes, when I had an issue with my EVGA Z68 FTW, I emailed tech support on a Saturday and received an email back the same day! I still have the Z68 FTW board running in one of my machines. Anyway the whole thing started when the Game Blaster from my ASRock X79 Extreme is no longer functioning and I email ASRock for RMA of just the sound card. That got me thinking of the whole RMA and customer service issue, and my problem with ASUS. Yes EVGA has the best support and great/helpful forums.

Let's see how ASRock responds to my RMA...

Go on Newegg and read the reviews of the RIVE. Those will give you an idea as to what ASUS tech support is like. I literally lol'd at some of them so hard.

I received an email from ASRock the same day I submitted the RMA request, and it fixed my issue. Turns out that the sound card must be loose from the x1 slot and I needed to press firmly on it. I pulled the card out slightly and pressed it in firmly and lock it with the PCI slot screw. It must have been loose after 6 months in the case. Now I have sound for the front speakers again. It must be a common occurrence for this board/sound card. Kudos to ASRock.

Anyhow, I will get an EVGA Dark. But, when will it be on sale? I watched on Newegg for so long but the only sale I see is 10% off when I use V.Me. This board probably never went on sale before.

^^^^^
Newegg sometimes has promo codes. I bought my EVGA X79 Dark with a $15 off Promo code back in August last year. That's not as good as 10%, but it was a good deal for me at the time since the X79 Dark was just released. I paid full price for my RIVBE though...

Classy post. No doubt EVGA has great support... and a very helpful community here. I also feel the same way for both boards. Both are excellent products. I spent a lot more for my RIVBE... but I have no regrets with my switch from the X79 Dark to the RIVBE. It's been rock solid with my OC... and has the preferred features I want in a motherboard. My preferences are minor and doesn't take anything away from the X79 Dark. You can't go wrong with either.

I know that your support is great but I would like a product that will work. I'm not saying Dark is bad, but it probably has more problems compared to RIV BE

The choice is not easy but this time probably will set for the Asus

Also had a riot reading some of the Asus reviews on Newegg.  This review for the Asus X79 Deluxe scores pretty high!

"Cons: No such thing as ASUS support. Do not be fooled by the many "manufacturer" responses to complaints and problems you see here. Support does not exist. ASUS does not even have a record of the BIOS that is on the board let alone information if you can update it. The ONLY information and ability to support Win 8.1 x64 is on the box.  The Intel Rapid storage technology configuration bios setup is not accessible but does exist. Which is why the Marevell SATA ports are not configurable.  Other Thoughts: With the 0506 10/23/2013 bios version delivered on the board it was even difficult to get Win7 installed on the box. With or without secure boot.  Search the web and you will see if you do find support they will only rma with a refurbed product. No troubleshooting or verifiability available on any ASUS product.  There is no information in the manual. A few disclaimers and a picture of the bios. That is it. the support information included is invalid and leads to nowhere.  You have been warned."

No surprise you can find a pile of Asus MB between the Cuisinart 2 slice toasters and Nature's Sleep Memory foam mattresses at TigerDirect.  The ultimate ROG bundle, a toaster, a mattress and an RIVE MB.

I usually shop at the Toronto GTA locations.  They have great prices on CPU, or SSD but most of the enthusiast parts I am shopping for they don't carry.

Anyone who payed attention to the x79 mobos at the time (and especially EVGA) knows that the reviews where whipped clean by various methods (name change, discontinued, etc).

System: 7820X - MSI X299 Carbon AC - G.Skill 32Gb TridentZ 3200 - EVGA 1080 Ti - 500 Gb Samsung 970 EVO , 2Tb Crucial MX500, 2Tb, 3Tb, 4Tb Seagate - Seasonic 1000W Prime - Creative Sound Blaster Z - Windows 10 Pro 64 - Phanteks Enthoo Primo - Edifier S530D - Acer Predator XB271HU (1440p)

Watercooling loop: Heatkiller CPU - EK 1080 Ti - Swiftech MCP 655 with EK X-Top v2 - XSPC reservoir - Alphacool 480 x2

i just got an asrock x79 extreme6 up and running and everything went well. no bugs, no glitches no issues at all. it came with the newest bios (3.0) as well (from newegg). i recommend it if the other solutions are too expensive.

there is one thing that i kinda do not like about it though. the southbridge heatsink has a fan that only kicks on if it gets scorching hot. it's right below the back of the video card and it's almost too hot to touch, even when doing just about nothing. so i went into the bios and enabled the fan to always run because i was uncomfortable with the heat and feel 100% better now. but i bet the fan dies in a year or two, those southbridge fans always do.

I usually shop at the Toronto GTA locations.  They have great prices on CPU, or SSD but most of the enthusiast parts I am shopping for they don't carry.

Ah, yeah. I work at the only retail location that has access to their online warehouse. So we can pull 98% of the enthusiast parts off the website, into our retail environment. It's epic. I love my job.  But yes, we do have mattresses and houseware items. LOL.

Go on Newegg and read the reviews of the RIVE. Those will give you an idea as to what ASUS tech support is like. I literally lol'd at some of them so hard.

yeah. that is one of the mains reason is decided not to go with an asus (x79 pro) motherboard. i was initially ready to give them one more try, after all the glitchy dead motherboards i have owned in the past from them, but those reviews were just filled with so much contempt and hate that i couldn't bring myself to give them my money knowing the sh!t on their loyal paying customers and i actually felt oppressed just reading their horror stories. i feel bad for all those people that got jacked by asus.

ps - gratz on all the pics of everyones badass rigs in this thread. nice and clean, frikin' sweet!
