So prior to flashing the new BIOS I loaded the "Optimal Defaults" as per instruction. The keyboard and mouse are USB peripherals, and were made non functional with the default values. I can't seem to find where I enable them in the BIOS, not that remember ever having had to enable them in BIOS in the first place, either. So does anyone know wher the USB peripherals are enabled in the BIOS?

Er, I forgot to say, they are enabled under the USB config, so I'm guessing something else overrides them.
OK, so an update. They work in Safe Mode, but not when starting Windows7 normally.

Did you change the USB socket used for the mouse or the keyboard since the last working Win7 start ?

My SR-X ends up with a BSOD when I plug in the mouse (MS Sidewinder X8) into a different USB socket. Windows then announces new hardware found and obviously cannot complete its driver installation in that early state. With the mouse back into its former socket, it is know hardware and it boots well.

There might be something similar with  the USB detection by the BIOS. Clearing CMOS data or using a very simple no-name mouse might sometimes help.

Thank you, Cryptographer. No I did not change the USB port used. I tried doing so once the problem surfaced, but it did not help. I've got a no name mouse I could use, but I have no alternative keyboard. It also puzzles me that they are functioning in safe mode, but not when trying to type the password into the full W7 mode.
Is clearing CMOS different in some way to loading the default BIOS?
I guess the problem also could be from some interference from Legacy USB support and/or USB 1.1 mode?

Tried with the no name mouse. Unfortunately it did not help. All of them work in SafeMode, though, and are recognized in the BIOS.

Reinstalled the keyboard driver, but no change. I guess I could do a system restore.

Tried disabling legacy USB1.1. Nope it was not that, because it  rendered the keyboard and mouse useless also outside windows. Cleared CMOS. Upon startup I got my first BSOD, Microsoft Windows rescue service stepped in and asked if I wanted to do a system restore. Yes, please. Done. Keyboard and mouse working inside W7 again.

So I figured it was some installation I had made after last restore version was created that, when combined with loading the optimal defaults, had created the problem with the keyboard and mouse. Thus, when again attempting to flash the BIOS, post the system restore, I figured I should try to load the optimal defaults again, just to check. I thought this should not render the keyboard and mouse non functional, because I expected the default version to equal the CMOS version. But no, loading the optimal default in BIOS resulted in exactly same situation, kb and mouse non functional in W7. So I guess the CMOS BIOS is different from so called Optimal Defaults.

During boot the BIOS builds up / updates a table of pnp devices (similar to the Windows device manager). It seems that loading optimal defaults destroys table's integrity. After lots of adapter card changes it might be useful to get rid on outdated entries in that table by resetting CMOS.

OK, thank you for explaining the table integrity destruction through loading optimal defaults. The second time, after I reset CMOS and again loaded the optimal defaults, still destroyed the device table's integrity. So then it seems that getting rid of the outdated entries does nothing to the default values. The default values seem outdated, and stay outdated, at least that's my understanding based on this experience. I wonder why the instruction for flashing recommends loading default values in BIOS instead of just clearing CMOS, if this means that the device table integrity is maintained. I'm sure I'm overlooking some aspect... BTW, I haven't done lots of adapter card changes, this build is 10 days old or so.
