Very nice tip!  I've got Samsung too, although I already suspected that based on the mem clocks I was reaching.

Re: Find out your RAM type, without removing cooler! 2013/11/18 13:20:49 (permalink)
Looks like all cards have Samsung except mine, and not only GTX780.
I can't describe how I'm disappointed with EVGA as company because decision to do that.
That mean they don't look at all on some series. Not even to talk about binned chips if they put worse possible memory on market in their most expensive model of card. That'snot color of caps, we talk about second most important part of card after chip and they play with that.
What to talk any more about some binned chips, maybe for some series, but all people can get bad surprise without reason.
This is not NVIDIA guilty, this is pure decision of EVGA instead to wait 2 weeks not to give people weaker cards for same price.
This cards are made for people who want to OC, not because fabric OC, what someone can do with 14 phases if Video Memory is worse on market from non existence company because similar things. They not exist...Elpida is now Micron that mean nothing,we can talk about that for 5 years and when they launch 3 year best video memory on market.
That directly influence on 3D score, stability in games, min/max and average fps. What to talk than any more, what is next...This is not ASIC, difference is so big, even Dominator GTX compared with HyperX Kingston can't give so much performance difference.
What will be next, they will put expensive parts in first series, than in middle what they find, than when they see complains they will back again normal and people who get bad... Who f*** them... You see cards with Samsung memory have and higher boost clock...
And I'm last who complain because something what can'directly hit on performance, everybody knew that with Z77 series when half things not work I stay I didn't complain...This is madness for me. For reference model can pass but and than is low punch for Classified no excuse...
And reality is like that, nobody is guilty for that and the end usually people who have no money stay longer time with some bad things.
For that I can't blame nobody, that is like that, I talk about this because place where I live in USA, probably I would not tell anything only put card in garbage or sell to someone and cross on normal Classified. But usually someone, and not only me, that happen to other people not only with graphic cards saved money longer for premium finish with garbage.
Many my close friends are happy because I was so persistent for EVGA,even if they do same for ASUS, but what to do I only can save money and buy what I like nothing else.
I didn't expect this really.

Re: Find out your RAM type, without removing cooler! 2013/11/20 16:13:56 (permalink)
Thanks for the BR!  I didn't have a screenshot of my own to post in the OP before because my system is up and down as I change components, so I posted the one from OCN before.  It's gone, and now a perm one, uploaded to EVGA's forums, is there for eternity.

So... I updated the original post to have my own screenshot of my 780 Classifieds - both with Samsung memory purchased direct from EVGA around Oct 10th, 2013.  Woot!  Woot!

That, combined with that they both have the newest BIOS revision from EVGA (3rd bios) which supposedly has better memory timings, may explain why I am able to be BF3-game-stable at 6000x1080 resolution using 2.8 GB of ram at 7,400 memory overclock!  Bumping voltage to 1.7V gets me to 7,800 Mhz BF3 stable!  Though, BF3 flashes the entire screen black when I change my HUD mode.  Odd.

lampinridcm5
Surprised at some of the negativity in here.

Me too!  This was a serious WIN for us 780 Classified owners that were always wondering what memory we had in the silicon lottery.

CAxVIPER
rjohnson11
The fact that someone decided to research this and let our forum members know about it and also post screenshots make this a valuable post to many who have had questions about their memory manufacturer.

Pretty stupid reason, he didn't find it. He was looking through a thread on OCN and copied the post. By your theory I should have 100 BR for posting new drivers because it took me a hell of a lot more work to do. New drivers benefit users more than knowing their memory type.

Have you ever tried to follow a thread on OCN?  Through 100s of pages, updated with 100+ posts per day?  Your wife will leave you, your dog will leave you, your 2 year daughter will run off with a biker when's 18, etc... (IOW, it's a time suck)

The fact I just happened to hit refresh while sitting on the subway in NYC made me go, HOLY ****!  +REP the guy.  Then, nada.. no one said anything else for the rest of the day.

I felt it really needed to be highlighted and broadcasted.  Everyone is yanking their coolers just to see what memory they have.  Ridiculous.

I felt EVGA's forums was the best place to do that, instead of a single reply to the OCN there where it is lost in oblivion.

EVGA_JacobF
We looked into this and can say that it is accurate. It is reading the memory info directly from the memory strap within the VBIOS.

SWEET!

Re: Find out your RAM type, without removing cooler! 2013/11/20 16:42:50 (permalink)
What silicon lottery??? Silicon lottery???...NO!!! Silicon lottery have nothing with bad memory on some models.
That's PURE BAD DECISION OF COMPANY WHO OBVIOUS DON'T CARE BECAUSE THAT CAN INFLUENCE SERIOUSLY ON PERFORMANCE. WHEN THEY SEE WHAT HAPPEN THEY CHANGED DECISION BUT FOR US WHO GET ELPIDA THAT MEAN NOTHING AND SILICON LOTTERY IS NOT THAT.SILICON LOTTERY IS WHEN YOU BUY DIRECTCUII AND ALL SERIES HAVE SAME PARTS INSIDE NOT 3 LEVEL DIFFERENCE AND THAN WE CAN TALK ABOUT LUCK.
But when you get excellent memory than it's easy to say on that way. Better show some respect for people who payed Dominator GTX and get HyperX because that is true AND NOT SILICON LOTTERY.
But you didn't get good memory because you are lucky, simple because you bought graphic card in right time.
And maybe we need to wake up Nostradamus next time to ask what will find in next EVGA Classified box.
This is just like people over world describe EVGA. Than best is we will leave EVGA for you in USA and no problem.
Other make highest class same for all customers.
But never mind this is not first and last time,EVGA lead own politic where some customers every year leave that company because terrible decision. Only blind man can't see that. With such politic they can exist only, not even to scratch ROG.

Can you imagine CORSAIR start to pack Samsung Binned chips in some pack and other revision I don't know Nanya...in Dominator Platinum.
But completely same marketing, same price, everything same except performance.
And say that's lottery and we are surprised with negative comments of people who get Nanya...
Because EVGA do just that and nothing else. And whole world need to see that on right way...not like lottery.
Because with lottery all people have same chance, with Elpida you have no chance to get performance same as with Hynix and special Samsung.

It's funny that some people would want you to believe that all Elpida memory is worthless just because theirs isn't good.  People want to create division and hate instead of accepting the fact that overclocking ability is random luck just like it has always been.

Agreed!

As far as the 780 Classified goes, I actually think it is the BIOS revision in these 780 Classifieds.  A friend's 780 Classified with Elpida didn't get past 7,000 memory, even at 1.65V.  I gave him my newer BIOS and he was able to get to 7,400 Mhz in Valley without touching the memory voltage.  Dozens of others report the same results with earlier versions of Classys.

Strange that some people are getting kind of angry, or feel like they were treatet unfair, because they didn`t get the ram with the best reputation.
I got my stepped up 780 Gtx sli on Tuesday with elpida and they run @ 1100 Mhz with stock voltage and i´m happy with them, the beautiful manufactured nvidia cooler
and with evga letting me step up my 770 classified.
I did a short tests with mem offset of 100 Mhz that worked well and play some games @ max quality, enjoying what i have received.
Thank you EVGA

Moderator note: Is it safe to post BIOS files here at EVGA?  I know we usually do it over at OCN.  Didn't see rules about it here.

If you don't have Samsung memory Hynix is the next best followed by Elpida.

As I mentioned earlier, I have first-hand experience (instead of rumors) to see it most likely is the BIOS revisions - not memory type.

Yes, the BIOS that came with the Elpida versions sucks.  So, flash the 3rd revision of the BIOS that came with mine:

v80.80.21.01.80
GPU-Z Validation: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/9nh8k/
Download: http://eduncan911.com/downloads/EVGAGTX780CLASSIFIED-80.80.21.01.80.zip

Ignore the difference in the GPU-Z link and XX.XX.XX.00.XX and XX.XX.XX.01.XX that you might see.  Those are the NORMAL and LN2 BIOSes files as needed.

Or, even a newer 4th revision that Jacob posted over at OCN:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1411500/official-evga-classified-owners-club/3260_20#post_21093957

Instructions on how to flash are in the first post:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1411500/official-evga-classified-owners-club/3400_20

BACKUP your BIOS first (both BIOS files).  You'll need to flash it back, and set nvflash --protecton, if you want to send it in for warranty/exchange/etc.

Point being: don't knock Elpida until you do your homework and flash some BIOS files that may give you better memory overclocks.  Doing this I was able to go to 7,400 on stock voltage on a friend's Elpida memory card.

Good memory.
You can say difference between Samsung and Hynix can depend from sample to sample.
You have chance for higher overclock.

That's the problem it may or may not help, most of the time it doesn't help because elpida is junk. I've had experiences with elpida memory and can confidently say it's junk, lots of people on OCN would agree with me also.

Re: Find out your RAM type, without removing cooler! 2013/11/29 21:09:55 (permalink)
With Elpida no help, smart man who have experience with overclocking can see that for 10min.
Stories about lucky people who OC Elpida as Samsung only put them in position to someone think they lie.
One guy even say +1000 with Elpida. I can't explain how that is impossible I only wait when someone will cheat with photoshop to present bad Elpida as bad luck and silicon lottery.  I can't explain how that is far from reality. 500MHz OC Memory can't 80% of Samsung chips.
I think EVGA need to leave guys who get Elpida to cross on Ti. Because they are seriously screwed.
And it's so hard to find exactly some similar example in IT world where customers lose so much because manufacturer mistakes.
I can OC card on 1330MHz with 1-2 fail before find voltage, probably and more but I didn't want to try any more when I saw result,
my result is lower than people who can 1250MHz because EVGA give me bad memory.
I can't find excuse for reference model to someone who get bad memory if can't find so fast EVGA graphic card...not for Classified.
I do everything what I can to find their Classified model not looking at all how much I will payed for that and I don't deserve that.
I think most of you don't even understand my position but that's same as you need to buy something what Japan made only for their market not for export.
Exactly.
Flashing with other BIOS I think maybe is not even possible, I tried once with some other but simply he didn't match and you hear beep and cmd gone.
For this I'm not sure but memory is bad. Memory is locked on stock settings and that's it. They make memory to work like that and because of that nobody choose their memory any more. They excellent good RAMs and chaotic fails in past that's true. EVGA should give us chance to cross on Classified Ti and fix own mess in their highest class. That's not 10000 people. Maybe 50-100. Off course not for free, only to pay price difference between Classified now and Classified Ti when show up.
I count that on old way with MHz and Elpida is 1600-1700MHz from sample to sample. But everyone who can OC on 1650MHz can say he had luck.

Yes ASUS didn't screw their customers, GTX780 DCII have Samsung chips.
But next time someone from you who now get Samsung will be in mine position.
I can't explain some people open topics, they leave EVGA, never again EVGA, they are disappointed, goodbay EVGA, ..etc
talk on 10 forums bad things about EVGA for much smaller problem than this with Classified and worse video memory on market on some models.
I never say something like that, but I feel very bad and I simply can't forgive this,... I can't... this is too much...
but I try to finish that on different way to save money and cross on Ti.
Before few days I saw Dominator Platinum with old price only 3 pack in Serbia,
I hurry to borrow money only to avoid to spend mine money because save for damn Classified Ti.
But I have feeling they are people not aware at all how their movement is low punch and bad, and what someone people do to find their premium card and
that is worse thing for future and for people who need to count on them.
