6.16 @ 219mph in the quarter from larry larson. 100% street legal driven to the the track and driven off the track. pulled the chutes out at 1000ft mark. thats very impressive

    Guess he has a way to disable the lights for the drag stip otherwise its not street legal. Notice that he has zero brake lights.

    Impressive, although it would seem a stretch to call that thing street legal although it does meet the needed definition of street legal I suppose.

    That would be outlaw class at our local track.

    Drag Week punishes those cars and Larry is one of the Kings of Drag Week. They call it a Street Car even though it is a truck because "Street Car" covers all vehicles. My car was built for what they use to call the Hotrod's Pump Gas Drags but Drag Week is a lot tougher event. My rear license plate folds down and the receiver type parachute mount goes in. Perfectly legal on the street and the track. Larry turns off the lights (to save voltage) and pulls the plates when the chutes go on. That is a purpose built truck for Drag Week. Basically it is a Promod with the bare minimum requirements to be street legal.
     
    "Drag Week is the event where quarter-mile racers with street-legal cars compete five days in a row at four different dragstrips, and must drive their race cars 1,000-plus miles from track to track on public roads without any assistance from support vehicles. The car with the lowest average elapsed time over the five days of racing is declared HOT ROD's Fastest Street Car in America"
     
    Some of the rules:
     
    •No dealer plates allowed. No rental cars allowed.
    •Vehicles in competition must have functional headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, and a rearview mirror. Headlights must be of OE-type design.
    •All vehicles must meet NHRA safety rules for the e.t. and speed they are capable of, and drivers must be IHRA or NHRA licensed if required. Drag Week™ officials will not accept time slips that are quicker or faster than the car or driver’s tech’d legal e.t. and mph. Running quicker than the safety equipment or driver’s race license allows is cause for disqualification at the discretion of the race director.
    •Any racer intending to run classes and speeds that require an NHRA or IHRA license, per the guidelines in the NHRA rule book, must be qualified and must have obtained the required license by the sanctioning body prior to undergoing tech at Hot Rod Drag Week. Both NHRA and IHRA licenses are accepted at Drag Week.
    •Vehicles with rule variations may be classified at the race director’s discretion.
    •Any type of fuel may be used.
    •Equipment rules apply to both the street and track portions of the event.
    •Any participant found under the influence of alcohol or narcotics is subject to immediate disqualification and removal from the event. Likewise, unsportsmanlike conduct may result in disqualification or removal.
    NO TRAILERS, NO SUPPORT VEHICLES
    •Vehicles in competition may not be led or followed at any distance by support vehicles of any kind. A support vehicle is one used to supply, or with the intent of supplying, any rescue efforts or to carry anything for a competitor, including luggage, tools, fuel, repair parts or spares, and helpers or crew. Support vehicles towing just-in-case trailers are not allowed. Motorhomes are not allowed.
    •All vehicles must be driven under their own power during the entire Drag Week™ competition and may not be towed, trailered, pushed, or hauled at any time. The exception is in the event of an emergency in which a vehicle needs to be removed from the roadway or other dangerous situation, in which case assistance may be used to move the car a short distance to a safe area, for example, to the next highway exit.

    yup. all cars must be road worthy for alot of miles. over 1000 miles.  if it can drive down a public highway and meet state laws its a street car. larson is just one guy who is one of the top guys. heres a pic from last years drag week.

    Before anyone freaks out about the posted rules and the trailers in the above pic.....
     
    •Each competition vehicle may tow a single trailer up to 12 feet long from ball to tail and 6 feet high from
    ground to top, including the height of anything carried on top of the trailer. Alternately, a U-Haul 4x8-foot
    box trailer may be used. Trailers may not contain any components that contribute to cooling, charging,
    oiling, or fueling the competition vehicle while the trailer is being towed.

    But...they've taken Street Legal to place that saps all the fun out of it for me.  In my opinion (my opinion and a dollar buys you a cup of coffee), Street Legal should mean to able to make the daily commute in stop and go traffic, maintain the basic creature comforts (heater, air, radio, OEM seats), be DOT complaint in all respects, and be able to maintain street running condition without being torn down after each race. IE a "real" street car.  Anything less is just another class.
     
    That said, this is one fast mutha.  Reminds me more of an OUtlaw car.

    I'm mostly on board with you except for the air, and OEM seats.  Most OEM seats suck.
     
    My favourite class is and always has been Outlaw 10.5

    Larry runs in the Unlimited Class which is pretty much dominated by race shops that build a car for Drag Week. They are running 12 different classes this year with different types of rules so you will have multiple winners.

    kaninja, I use to be a fan of the Outlaw 10.5 but it pretty much died when the new drag radial came out. The replacement classes are Outlaw 275 and Xtreme 275. Bunch of my friends are running those and it is pretty competitive.

    Slash, I'm glad you clarified the part about the cars had to be able to drive 1000 miles. Makes the somewhat not "trailer queens".
     I wish they would come my way so I could hear and smell the powaar.. I'm used to seein Larson's 67 Chevy II in magazines and video.
