New rig, just noticed out of 6 gigs installed only 3.99 usable, had this problem a year ago on first X58 rig...forgot the fix I personally found, then tinkered around a few minutes ago and this fixed it for me.... 1 Start 2 Control Panel - System and Security 3 System 4 View amount of RAM and processor speed 5 Advanced System Settings 6 Advanced 7 Performance Settings 8 Advanced 9 Virtual Memory - Change 10 UNcheck (Automatically manage paging file size for all drives) 11 Click (OK) 12 Restart

Tried this method, and the method posted by a moderator about this issue, and still no change. It happens intermittantly for me. Sometimes the full 6 gigs show, and other times I get the 3.99 usuable. When I get the 3.99 usuable, it is always saying my windows expierience needs to be refreshed, like it is detecting new hardware. Have already reseated RAM and CPU, am frustrated. Any help would be appreciatied.

What ram model are you running, and what settings have you set for it in the bios? Us knowing your system configuration helps alot with diagnosis.

(In BIOS) Low Memory Gap = ? LMG seems to reserve an (selectable) amount of RAM for onboard devices such as VGA and perhaps some others? WIndows7 64bit Resource Monitor will indicate how the RAM is divided up.
Should anyone care what a teabag thinks? ?

If you have a RAM stick going bad, reseating or changing slots will not help. If using Win7 64bit, go to Control Panel>Performance Information and Tools>Advanced Tools (on top left corner)>Open Resource Monitor and click on the "memory" tab. If you have "hardware reserve" greater than a few MBs, 2Gb for example, one of your sticks is bad.

I have the same problem. I have 12GB, when i first built, I put in 6GB, then added 6 more, and all was well, all 12gb showing as expected. Then suddenly i got 12GB, but 7.99GB available. I set the MCH strap to DRAM ratio, and now it says 9.99GB usable... I hope that because the usable ram keeps changing, that it is not a hardware issue, but perhaps a bios issue. I have the x58 FTW3 with a i7 930, running at 3.9GHz, using Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 CS9 memory.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I thought once I entered my system info when I signed up, it would show in my posts, but here goes.
Intel Core i7-950
Corsair Dominator i7 1600mhz 3x2gb CMP6GX3MA1600C8
PNY 9600gt
EVGA X58 3XSLI Classified
Coolermaster HAF 932 Case
Windows 7 64bit Professional
WD 320 gig HD
My system would not boot initially, and after much fiddling and talking with EVGA techs, I finally got it to boot by unplugging it, removing the battery from the MB,' letting the juice drain', and then changing the RAM speed manually in the bios to 1600. One of the techs told me that my RAM was not on the compatibility list for this board, which I did not know at time of purchase. I am now thinking about returning my RAM and replacing with RAM on the list. I have tried so many of the fixes in the forums that I have forgotten all that I did =(.
Suffice to say nothing fixed the problem? This is my first ground up build, so I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to resetting bios and such. However I did change the MCH strap to DRAM, and several other things... I checked what atlrus mentioned, and it does say that 2057mb are 'hardware reserved'. If it's just a bad stick, why does it read it sometimes, and not others? Sorry I cant be clearer about all the things I have done to try and fix this problem. I could of course go into the bios and make a list of all the settings, but ugh! I will do that if it is absolutely necessary... Thanks for all the responses, any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Then you have a bad stick - try this - boot your computer with just one stick at a time, alternating them until you find out which one doesn't work.

Thanks atlrus, I will try that. I did run a microsoft memory test and it said all the sticks were fine. And why does it read it sometimes and not others? Makes me think that even running one stick at a time may not give me a clear picture. But I'll give it a try, thanks again.

Well, it's not 100% guaranteed that your RAM is bad, but more like 90% :) With my current RAM, if I push the clock too high - I lose a stick of memory on reboot. When I downclock - I get all 6GB back. I am not sure if it's the RAM of the mobo at this point, but I'm waiting on a set of different manufacturer RAM to show up next week and then re-test. Plus, I have it overclocked enough not to really bother with this issue right away. At the same time - the last two ram kits that went bad on me took the same road as yours - after experiencing a sluggish performance I would open the Windows performance monitor and when I see 2GB of ram hardware reserved - I knew one of the sticks went bad. Then I would reboot and if on POST the BIOS sees only 4GB of ram - I simply find the bad one. Btw, how exactly did you set the ram to 1600mhz in bios? And do you have any overclock on the CPU?

Neither CPU or RAM are overclocked. I changed the mem freq in the bios under Frequency/Voltage Control, and from there I believe it was Target Memory Freq, although it could have been under Memory Feature/Memory Freq. Confusing I know, but it was one of those two. It just brought up a menu when I hit enter, listing different frequencies (I believe it was initially at 1066?) and I selected 1600. My total memory in bios reads as 6291456k, which sounds like 6gigs to me? And then, this time I booted, the system is reading all 6 gigs in windows as well. As I said, it is intermittent, favoring the 6.00gigs(3.99 usable) in Windows about 9 times out of ten. One time it actually read only 1.99 usable, as if it was only seeing one stick. My best guess is that because this memory isn't on the compatibility list with my board, it's causing issues. Although at this point, I suppose it could be sun flares. :P

my 3.99 usable issue was found to be caused by a bad memory slot on the motherboard... RMA'ed the mobo, and now everything is groovy- all 6gb being used. same memory kit and everything.

Well I spoke to EVGA customer service today and they are going to RMA my board. The person I talked to didn't even ask for the BIOS info although I told him I had it. I also wasn't exactly filled with confidence when he said something like "You know even replacing your MB may not fix the problem..." Not sure what that meant, but I'm certainly hoping that it will. I asked if they would send me a Classified 3 instead of the older Classified that I have, being that they are the same price (I never claimed my rebate, so I payed full price). I even offered to pay any difference in price if there was any (after checking I saw that the 3 is 10 dollars more), but the person told me they wouldn't do that. He said I was passed the 90 day step up period (It's been like 4 months since I bought my board). Considering that I had problems right from the start with this board, that I spent many hours trying to fix the problem, and that I will now have to rebuild my PC and wait for the new part (The guy told me I'd be getting a new MB, though the EVGA site said I would be getting a refurbished part), I felt it wasn't too much to ask that they upgrade me. I was even willing to pay the difference. I don't want to sound overly negative here, but I have felt a lot of frustration over this. I see that several other people said they had the same problem and that it was a bad DIMM slot. I hope that is the case with me and the 'new' board works. I also realize that it has taken me a while on my end to deal with this, but I have a handicapped father to take care of, as well as my own life, and well, whatever...

EVGA is undergoing some very weird changes in their policies lately. Not only are they messing up bios updates and delaying them (see other topics), but their treating loyal customers also not very nice. I had the same problem with my motherboard; I had an E760 (around 6 months old or something) with 3.99 GB RAM usable as well. Tried everything and nothing helped. But since I needed the motherboard, I had chosen to use the Advanced RMA (EAR) option, so I would receive a new board without sending my old board in first. All I had to do, was to pay in front the fee for the motherboard and I would receive the money back afterwards (when I shipped the bad board back). They contacted me back in a short while telling me they would send me a Classified3 instead. So I find it really weird that option wasn't available to you as well. Maybe depends where you are living, I live in the Netherlands, so my motherboard came from EVGA Germany... Or maybe I just got lucky. I feel for you... Especially since you were willing to pay the difference even!
EVGA used to be a great company (I've been a customer since early 2005). But after 2017 it went completely downhill. EVGA doesn't treat customers as customers, but as complete idiots! I used to own over 30 EVGA products (videocards, motherboards, PSU's and so on). Not anymore. #evga #pathetic

When they don't have any refurbished or new orig type boards in stock they will send you alternate upgrade like that. European stock may be considered separately.

Paid for the board in advance, received my money back when I send back the (old) motherboard. Easy as that.

Ya I looked into it, you have to have signed up for the 'EAR' program within 30 days of your purchase, and paid an amount of money for the protection as well. So says their site anyway. =(

That 6GB (4/2 GB usable) is most likely a hardware issue. Check your bios for the amount of ram it is detecting. I had this issue, then I started cycling all my ram through the first DIMM and the computer would never boot up. Start experimenting with each of your DIMMs and see if perhaps maybe a stick is dead, or perhaps a DIMM slot is dead. For me, it was the very first DIMM slot in my EVGA FTW 3 board. If it only registers 4 or 2 gigs in the bios, then it is most likely a hardware issue. For some reason, Windows 7 detects all the RAM, but don't use it. As long as 1 stick is in there and working, it will boot up.

Found this article, and i'm having the same problem. I just upgraded from the sli le to the FTW 3 and it's only showing 4gb ram and 2gb is in the hardware reserved section. E-leet says i'm running dual channel. And everest shows all three dimm slots as filled... hmm
