Hey everyone.
I'm currently stuck between a dilemma in which my USB external drive refuses to work on my desktop computer which runs the Windows 7. It runs on my laptop which is running the same OS. At first I thought that it might be a USB issue but afterwards even my USB flash drives are working properly on my desktop's ports.

Lastly, the external hard drive shows up in the device manager but not in disk management so I figured that while explaining my problem I insert all the details so isolating the problem can be done quicker. Any help would be appreciated here :)

I do not have real answer, just a possible.   I just had flash drive that did not work on my Win7 when I plugged it in.  So I left it plugged in and rebooted.  The OS found a driver that worked immediately, happiness.  Strange because the flash drive had worked before a MS Win 7 update.

If I keep the external drive plugged in, and reboot the computer, there will be a constant loop where it will say 'logging off'. After unplugging the drive, it will reboot immediately. Same thing happens when I power on my computer and leave the drive plugged in.

strange, seems like the usb drive is bootable.  I have no other thoughts.

Well how about this, with the computer on plug in the external hard drive, then go into device manager and right click -> uninstall the device then unplug it. Then plug it back in and let it try to install the device again. Does it give any errors when you plug it like device not successfully installed?

I know this sounds a little goofy, but try leaving it plugged into the PC for an extended period of time.

I use a card reader for SD and CF cards, and when I input a CF card, it reads in a matter of seconds... The SD slot is finicky.... It can take up to an hour before it realizes something is in there... I can not explain this phenomenon, but I do photo editing and I need it to work, and that is the only way I have found so far, even with everything updated. Maybe that will work for you?

Some external HDDs don't like front USB ports.  Make sure to try plugging into the rear ports also.

I plugged the external hard drive in all of the ports present in my desktop. No such luck.

I can view it in the device manager, but as soon as I start uninstalling the device, the process stays in a continuous loop and afterwards, I get an error stating that 'device manager stopped responding'.

Alright, then use this method to uninstall the driver for the hard drive while its not plugged in.

    1. Start -> type cmd in search -> right click cmd.exe and run as admin
    2. Use the command "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1", DO NOT close cmd
    3. Use the command "start devmgmt.msc" to open up device manager
    4. Once in device manager, go to view -> show hidden devices
    5. Go to the external hard drive and try to uninstall it.

You have to launch device manager from cmd because setting the show non-present devices only applies to this instance, if you close cmd or open device manager from explorer, the setting will be lost. What you might be encountering is driver conflicts, so if it still locks up at this time try looking around and removing all other devices that are not in use using the method above. Also try in safe mode if you haven't already.

    EDIT: almost forgot step 4......

Already did that, but the hard drive is showing up in the device manager. Also everytime I try to uninstall it, the device manager stops responding :/
