I just bought an Asus blu-ray USB 2.0 drive. My system is EVGA SR-2 with Windows 8 64bit professional

The first time I plugged in the drive, it was immediately recognized in Windows and worked perfectly. I was able to test a few disks DVD's and CD's.

Now when I try it again, it does not works anymore. It is not detected neither by the OS nor in BIOS.

I have tried:

  • using the same drive and adapter on another Windows 8 computer (my laptop). It works perfectly.
  • using other USB ports on my system - tried them all and none works.
  • Restarting or shutting down the system and then turning it on with the drive already plugged. No luck.
  • trying different settings in SR-2 BIOS (changing the FDD setting to enabled, disabled, Auto).

What else can I do to diagnose this problem? Has anybody else has had external DVD/blu-ray drives connected to their SR-2 system? Has it worked for them? I also have an external old DVD writer drive that is also quirky.

The drive's USB cable has two inputs where on is only used for power. Both heads need to be connected. I thought perhaps the USB ports do send  have enough power for the drive but then if this is the cause, why the drive worked the first time it was connected? However, external hard disk and flash drives have worked flawlessly.

Thanks.

I actually noticed the drive is indeed detected in the BIOS (and option to boot from it is available in the boot configuration section). Nevertheless, Windows is unable to detect the drive. In any case, nobody on this forum so far seems have something to contribute to the dilemma.

I have one USB 2.0 Blu-ray drive that would also not work under Windows 8.0, I am not going to bother to test under Windows 8.1. The Drive Works fine under Windows 7 on a Z77 and a X79 computers. I also have 2 printers that will not work under Windows 8.0 and 2 USB Cameras the will not work.
Side Note: One of my internal Blu-ray drives needed a Firmware update to work under Windows 8.0 so check to see if ASUS has a new Firmware for yours. All my LG internal drives worked under Windows 8. Samsung USB 2.0 would not work under Windows 8 and they had no Firmware updates.

Ugghhh windows 8 I have it on my laptop and hate it. Was going to get it for my sr2 because it was 50 bucks cheaper but the guy who works at tiger direct talked me out of it. He said I will not allow you to run that sub par software on that expensive piece of hardware. Anyways, Using device manager check to see if the drive is detected there. Sounds to me like a driver conflict. If it is working and detected try updating the driver from the company's website. Windows sometimes chooses the pre existing driver it contains in the system 32 folder that is most compatible with that piece of hardware however, it cannot function perfectly or only work for a few times. I am inexperienced with blu ray drives but see if its in device manager and go from there. If you have a cd and another drive available use the drivers on the cd to update the drivers in windows through device manager. New versions are not always as stable as their predecessor.

The blu-ray drive is detected and works perfectly under Windows 8 (and now Windows 8.1) on my laptop. It is just on the desktop that is problematic. I googled it and this phenomenon has happened under previous versions of Windows too. I am not sure I should attribute the problem to Windows 8.

As of now, I have not found a solution yet.

It turned out it was a Windows problem. Here is the trick I found online which solved the problem:

""Windows 7 and 8 with this drive attached, and one of the updates recognized this drive as an "initio combo device class" - if this happens, your drive will be recognized in bios but you will not see the drive in my computer. In case this happens, go to device manager, remove the initio completely (delete  the driver), and your device will be recognized again."
