Hey guys. sux for my first post to be with an issue. but im on my back leg here and i could really use some help!

Recently after upgrading my p55 sli's ram to 2x 4gig corsair vengeance, and my cpu cooler to a corsair h60, i've noticed strange behavior with my computer. once it boots, the post LED shows 94; which i'm pretty sure has no mention in the user's manual; and the board only stays running for around 10 minutes before it shuts off.

I learned about the shutdown issue the hard way whilst trying to flash my bios in hopes of fixing the mystery 94 code and the flash was put to an unexpected halt when the computer decided to randomly turn off. After spending a couple hours scratching my head, knowing this can't be good, and trying to figure how i was going to try to get a boot out of this thing. i realized i could used the bios_sel jumper to choose a possibly saved bios. When I did this, I managed to get a boot once more after selecting the second bios. i started up in safe mode just to see if i could get any stability out of my machine and sure enough it shut down after around 10 minutes....and here we are

if i start up in my primary bios the system powers up, fans running. HDD's active. no display though. And 1 beep spaced around 5 to 8 seconds apart from eachother

I personally have no idea what the issue is, but im guessing it could be from some sort of cpu issue. but i cant tell if temps are off from the post code error. also there is an orangish LED lit near my ram that usually isnt on iirc.
previous to these symptoms I upgraded from 32 bit ultimate to 64 with the knowledge im going to be using more RAM

Any suggestions of what this error code 94 might be? or how i can get my system to start acting normal again?

no overclocking. ram is running at correct voltages.

thanks for any help

Reseat the CPU and cooler. Check the temps with CPU-Z.

I ran core temp on it and it read 99 degrees c on all cores.
incredibly high to me. and ive reseated my h60 about 4 times now

could having too much thermal compound on when you seat it cause the opposite of reducing heat? the first time i took it off i examined both my processor and the copper plate on my h60 and noticed a bit of an excess in compound so i took a little bit off and re-spread it

Re:Error code 94 2011/07/03 20:45:26 (permalink)
ok, after reseating and removing some thermal compound my temps seemed to drop. also my computer booted seemingly quick and felt much more native to how it usually performs but shortly after watching the core temps they gradually raised from 69 back to 80ish, at which point i turned off my computer to avoid any damage.

which leads me to my next group of questions:
Could it be a faulty pump unit on the h60?
when i touch the surface of the pump it's rather warm to the touch which is kind of expected. also i'm not sure what to look for activity-wise to make sure it's working

how long does it take for a cpu to take damage from running at temperatures at that level? (80-99c, has been measured to this point)

also the post led monitor seems to have shut off or disabled, so now im not really sure what to use to gauge any further issues. but at this point. it just seems to be heating.

at this point would it be better to just try my stock cpu cooler and try to point out an issue with this h60?

Yes try putting on the stock cooler, see if it runs normal, if it has normal temps then the H60 pump is faulty and you will have to rma it, but to just check, you have fans installed on it and they are running? When you said the surface of the pump is warm to the touch that means that the heat is still staying in the loop and isn't being dissipated or at least enough to have normal temps (probably means that the water is at a stand still and isn't moving because of the pump, btw did you make sure that the pump is plugged in?)

(also to answer your question, you definitely shortened the lifetime of the cpu by a little, but it would take a while to fry the cpu, probably something like 24 hours)

There isn't a specific one, try all of them, but really the best one is the cpu fan, anything about the issue? Is it still persisting? Did you try the stock heatsink?

So you can't boot into windows? and everything runs except the post code LED? (Try reinserting the battery of the post code LED, that might fix the issue) Try booting into windows with the stock cooler, see if that works (also the post code error 94 I doubt is a error code, I think it's more like a temp monitor and the temp was too hot)

If you still can't boot in, I want you to remove the heatsink again, clean off the TIM, and completly reseat the cpu, then remount with the stock heatsink

Nah you can let the rad hang, just unplug the wires for the fans and pump

just took out my mobo's battery and still nada when i boot up. LED's stiil inactive and the yellow/orange led is still on, i looked at the light a little closer and it's labeled led 2. not sure what it means but i think it might have lit up when temperatures started running high after initial installation of the cooler, late friday. only being bootable 6ish times when i tried fixing it over the last couple days

After looking at the manual it says the yellow one means that it means the system is powered on, blue means that the system is receiving constant power, green means the memory slots are working, right now go check the psu and power connections, please list the psu model as well, it sounds like the psu crapped out since the motherboard isn't receiving constant power

I only read about 3 led's on the board, a green for the ram slots, a blue to check if the board is getting constant power, and a yellow to tell if the system is powered on, I'm guessing the orange one you are talking about is the ram one (but I still don't know though) as long as the blue and yellow are on that means the power is on and constant, do you have any other ram to test the system with?

could it be that my computer doesnt have an active bios anymore? when i flashed earlier it shut down mid flash, and im pretty sure thats not good at all. But now it really seems like everything's running ok, and wouldnt a botched bios stop a computer from booting up period? thus stopping the post LED from working?

I never thought about that, that's highly possible that the Bios did get screwed during the flash that failed, I wouldn't know try contacting the tech's about this one, wait when you plugged the fan in it was spinning? (For the H60 that is)

I'm fairly sure it's down to a damaged mobo,a damaged processor, or what im thinking is a corrupted bios that's doing me in. when i power up my system, i get no beeps, yet everything starts full force as if it's under load and the fans stay under load while the bios stays idle, no beeps. no post codes.

gonna fill a ticket and wait i guess :/ too bad i'll have to wait until tuesday

Well, if your sure the PSU was hooked up correctly, and another PSU does the same thing, and since you have tried everything else. Then an RMA of the Motherboard is what will have to be done. Sorry about the Motherboard, and I hope everything works out. After you get a new Motherboard, post again, and let us know how everything went.

Im willing to bet its the bios flash, the board couldn't have died from the cpu being under 99c for 10 mins, it's highly improbable, but stuff happens hope you get this fixed

For BIOS, Try from a Flash memory stick as below
Can you use your other computer to download these items

INSTRUCTIONS: BIOS updating can be accomplished VIA the below method:
  • Download the following .zip file: E657_A74.zip
  • Go into the folder where you unzipped this package and run the appropriate batch file.
  • For Windows XP, Vista or 7 32Bit: AFUWIN32.BAT
  • For Windows XP, Vista or 7 64Bit: AFUWIN64.BAT
  • Press Y in CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS
  • After the flashing is finished, shut down the computer. Then power on again and go into BIOS, Load Defaults, Save and Exit
Warning:
**Do not restart or interrupt your PC while the flash is ongoing
**Do not Flash BIOS on overclocked settings
**It is always recommended to power-down after flash
Legacy BIOS:
E657_A74.zip
E657_A72.zip
from a search engine: "hp usb disk storage format tool"
Then use the Tool to format a USB Flash drive and copy zip files to it and use the DOS .bat file.   Now all that may be bull .... as you say you cannot get any post even into BIOS so that you can  use USB for boot..
Can you borrow a i7/i5 CPU chip to try?  GOOD LUCK .
