The asymmetric memory distribution is very strange, there will be one cpu with dual memory channel while the other with quad memory channel?, this will lead to a cpu more powerfull than the other.

EVGA SR2 at 200 Bclk, default voltages
2xXeon E5645 at 3800MHz Turbo on, default voltages, 2xCoolerMaster V6GT

4xZotac GTX480 Quad-SLI, default clocks and voltages
2x WD Caviar Black 2Tb 7200 RPM

no, the memory will always be quad channel, its just that there are two sets for the main CPU and one for the 2nd

We wanted to make it easy for users of the SR-2, so you can still utilize all the memory if you wanted.

If not, you can run it in standard 4 channel mode.

If you run 12 identical sticks, is it still quad channel, or do you have to run 8 sticks (4 +4) to run in quad channel mode?

Why it does not have 16 memory slots? apart of the SR2 memory reason, is there also a problem with not having enough space on the HPTX form factor for so many memory slots?

<3!  It looks...garguantuan though ;)  Any bigger than the SR-2?  Interesting layout but seems to make sense, especially to those familiar with the SR-2.

That looks unbelivable... only thing I'd change would be a PCI-E x1 slot for a sound card. Other than that it's pretty amazing I think I may just skip the single socket boards and go right to a dual socket, assuming the overclockability and stuff is good.

is it really the final design ?

Can you explain you have twice more Dim on on CPU and why DIM bank are still closed to the CPU ?
If you cool the system by air, it will be very difficult to have RAd on memories....
If you change to Watercooling (i mean MB and CPU) , bye bye the Waranties ????

Is the SR3 another HPTX board or is this E-ATX as some news/rumour sources are reporting?

Those are SAS controllers (also supports 4 SATA each)

Yes it is final design minus the heatsinks of course.

By the time the SR-3 is out in the wild, there will be a lot more compatible 8GB DIMMs available, so a total of 96 GB of RAM should satisfy just about anyone (well, at least for a year or so ).

considering you can get 96gb or more ram on the SR-2 I would imagine it would be just as easy on the SR-X

True, but the operative word is "compatible". EVGA never supported using 8GB DIMMs in the SR-2 and besides at the time of the mobo's introduction, the cost of using 8GB DIMMs was prohibitive.

Even with 12 "supported" 4 GB DIMMs on the SR-2, more than a few people have had problems with booting up and finding some of their RAM has fled to the proverbial bit bucket. Now we are starting to see the big manufacturers introducing 8 GB DIMMs and that's only going to get more common. Right now, NewEgg shows Corsair, Patriot and Crucial 8GB DIMMs, all under $250 US each.

I'm up for an SR-3, but I don't think the wife is too keen on any more computer hardware for awhile. I'll just live vicariously through the rest of you guys, until I can scrounge up the money for the new mobo and two Sandy Bridge EP Xeons.

16 & 32 gb dims have been out for some time. The cost of course is there but you get what you pay for. The ram issues people had were not compatibility problems, They were issues with setting's Overclocking and conflict issues between the Marvell 9128 Chipset and JMicron JMB362, or even issues with the firmware of the chips themselves. Knowing this did not make everyone happy or even fix issues for everyone but i hope that this time around EVGA has selected controllers updated to limit or eliminate similar issues arising. The reason EVGA did not list larger modules as compatible with the SR2 was because of the bandwidth limitations built into the Xeon 55 & 56 processor series which would in the end limit or make having such large ram modules slower then they were rated to run. It really had nothing to do with true compatibility.

maybe another PC could b on the drawing board next year :-) but I would have liked more ram... anyway, the SR-2 has been great so I have great expectations for the SR-X

what sort of performance could we expect with this beast? I guess time will tell :-)
