Hello,

I just installed a GTX 980 reference design from Gigabyte and now the boot process is very slow, stopping at B2 boot step for several (about 30~40) seconds. FYI before installing the new card the boot was very fast.

The system works fine but I noticed GPU-Z was showing PCI-e as 2.0, so I tried to enter the motherboard BIOS to check the settings, but for my surprise whenever I try to enter the BIOS all I see is the cursor blinking at top-left of screen with a lot of intelligible artifacts/colors all over the screen.

What can I do to fix it?

did you clear cmos after new card install ? may be something related to pci-e bus speed .

But if I do that and it doesn't work, probably I won't be able to enter the motherboard bios to reconfigure settings... I don't have a spare video card to test.

Maybe EVGA can test a reference GTX 980 to see if they can reproduce the error and provide a solution?

Would it be possible to select the second BIOS switch position and then clear CMOS?  Or is the CMOS settings for both BIOS positions?  Alter might be is to buy the cheapest Video card  Less than $30 or ask a friend to borrow an old PCIe card.   Any of them should allow you back into bios.

Update your Bios! v2.01 is a little old for newer video cards.

2nd bios has a version that's incompatible with my CPU, the computer doesn't even boot if that bios is used. EVGA had to send me a new bios :(

BTW can I change the bios selector switch while the system is powered up?

Thanks.

Yeah, it's a bit old and I was thinking about updating it. Truth is it wasn't broken so I didn't.

I can't see anything about compatibility with new video card in bios download page, that's why I'm begging for someone at EVGA to test a reference GTX 980 on the EVGA X79 SLI. Guess EVGA folks don't read the forums? :(

Yeah, only one thing is bothering me a little... PCI-e is still 2.0@x16 on GPU-Z and I have it set to GEN3. My previous cards (CF 7970 and R9 290X) were detected as PCI-e 3.0@x16.

You need to run NVIDIA's Patch for the X79.

But I do not see the GTX 980 or any Maxwell on the list?

Your using a Sandy Bridge-E CPU so Nvidia drivers will not pick up Gen3 without the patch that bcavnaugh mentioned above.
