Hi all, this is my first post here in years if I remember well, so it's glad to be here and thank you in advance for any help you could give me. My question is simple, the xeon support on the x79 dark looks pretty small. I have an E5-1603 and an E5-2670 (both Sandy bridge-E) hanging around and I want to test them, don't know if they work at all. Can my X79 Dark start them or not? I don't see them in the cpu support page, but maybe it's because has not been updated, I don't see why they can't be supported (humble Asrock X79s support all xeons). But before doing some damages I'm asking your opinion/support. thanks again.

Xeons will work, you may also want to run ECC memory, I would make sure you have the latest BIOS on the board too.
Heatware: Trelor - I primarily use eBay which is attached to my heatware.

Just an FYI, I tried an Xeon E5-2670 and my Dark won't boot, and I have the latest BIOS. The Xeon booted right up on an ASUS RIVBE and was tested to be working. The Dark booted with another Xeon that is on the support list, e5-2609.

The EVGA X79 Dark Motherboard does not support ECC Memory. From: http://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/legacy/

Can this matter be clarified? Another one on this very forum asked about turbo settings on a E5-2670, so it seems that it works for him. Is it possible to update the microcode for the bios? I don't see why some Xeon works and some not. It's strange that there is no "mod" bios for this wonderful mainboard.

If you already have the chip and the board, why not try to boot it up? If not, I recommend an ASUS board.

You can also start an Official Support Ticket for a clarification. I do not see the E5-2670 CPU on the Support List I posted above.

I will do that, but I don't see why it works sometimes and sometimes not. And I fail to understand why some Xeons work and some not. It doesn't make sense. Can't be updated the microcode by EVGA?

Where do you see "works sometimes and sometimes not." On the X79 Dark Motherboard?

For LfAWolf it doesn't even boot, while for snclawson it works (even if turbo is not full supported). How do you explain such behaviour?

I think I posted in the wrong thread. Let's do that here - So do you already have the x79 Dark board and looking to get a cheap CPU to play with? Not trying to sell you anything but want to know your situation.

Than you for your help, I have both, the X79 Dark and the E5-2670. I just want to know if it will work and if not if it can be possible to obtain from EVGA a bios/microcode update.

I call this " but I'm running into some strange turbo issues and was wondering if anyone here has tried this combo in the past?" The behavior is the CPU is Not supported.

If you already have it, you can try to boot it up. Set it up outside the case on top of your motherboard box and do a quick boot with the CPU and proper cooling. You probably don't need thermal paste as you just want to check if it boots. Otherwise, you should get thermal paste and a decent cooler to get into the BIOS. I bought 3 E5-2670 and none of them works with my EVGA X79 Dark, but you might have better luck.

It would be good if snclawson could say something about that.
