I see your point.

Initial rough cut:

Inner channel cut:

O-ring cut, then flipping them over to start the backside:

Stay tuned for the Delrin machining...

No, but I do shout when I get metal splinters.  I will take wood splinters any day.

Cutting out outer shells in the Delrin.

Delrin is done.  Tried something new, and added a tiny chamfer along the edges which I am not sure you can see to well:

Its hard to take photo's of dark materials.

Looking at the blocks on the 1st page you can tell the difference.  Looks similar to what EK puts on their blocks, which is a nice subtle touch.

Now comes the arduous task of the finish work.  de-burring, sandblasting, coating, tapping, assembling etc.

That will take a few days, but I anticipate (read: HOPE)them being done by the end of the week, and out next week.

Thanks! haven't been in the basement since the weekend.  Hopefully I can fix that and get them coated.  Then I realized, Most of you guys are stuck waiting for the chipset blocks too ;)

So I will get the individual ones out first.

The de-burring process, nothing but a hand file, and time:

The center one has been de-burred.  The other 2 have all the stringy copper remaining.

I know very little of the processes happening with these so my pardon my lack of knowledge but here is a question; Why is it that the color of the copper seems so different in the de-burring photos compared to the photos of them just being cut? Possibly just a weird lighting issue? Or is some awesome act of science causing a color shift?

That is just lighting. Copper oxidises very quickly so will darken
after machining, even from just touching copper, the acids on your
skin can speed up the oxidisation process.
In the latter pics they look lighter so it is sure to be just the lighting.

Re:EVGA X79 DARK WATERBLOCK 2014/03/19 19:40:22 (permalink)
Sneaky is correct.  I will say these blocks have been machined for a while, and they havent oxidized all that much considering its been a few days where they were just sitting.  I did wipe them down after I took them off the machine, so I am sure that helped.

I am being optimistic, but I may have those individual blocks out this week.  The rest of you are stuck for the long haul until the Chipsets are done.  ;)
