Since some of you are just now receiving your boards, I figured now would be a good time for a quick and easy overclocking guide. Make sure to click on any image for a larger version.

Make sure to grab latest BIOS and EVGA E-LEET 1.02.8 first!

Note: Just because these settings work in my case, they may not in all cases depending on the components, it is best to use this as a base or a guide and tweak from there.

Also, this guide will use an Intel 920 as an example, if you have an Intel 965, it will be a different experience since you will have an unlocked multiplier, you will not need to rely on adjusting the QPI frequency.

So lets talk about our goal, our goal is as follows:
  • Using an Intel 920, overclock to at least 4.2GHz on air.
  • Run DDR3 memory in Triple Channel at 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24.
  • Run a QPI frequency of 200MHz or higher.

1. So the first thing we want to do is go into the BIOS, and press "Load Defaults", save and exit and go back into the BIOS and navigate to "Frequency/Voltage Control"

2. Next we will adjust the following options:
  • CPU Clock Ratio to 20x.
  • CPU Host Frequency (AKA QPI/BClock) to 200MHz.
  • CPU Uncore Frequency to exactly double my memory multiplier, in this case 16x.
  • This will give me exactly 4GHz (20x200), but we want 4.2GHz or more so keep reading...

3. Next we will go under "Memory Feature" and adjust my memory to it's specifications. In my case, I am running 1600MHz memory so I will make the following adjustments:
  • Memory Frequency to 2:8.
  • Memory timings adjusted properly per memory specifications.
  • This will give me 1600MHz memory. (200x8)
  • Set the tRFC Setting to 74

4. Next, and probably most importantly, we will need to adjust the voltages. Under the "Voltage Control" I made the following adjustments, and please note, you may need to tweak this further for better stability, and/or better temps.
  • EVGA VDroop Control - Without VDroop
  • CPU VCore - 1.47500V (note, this is just an example)
  • CPU VTT - +300mV
  • CPU PLL - Auto
  • DIMM Voltage - 1.65V
  • DIMM DQ Vref - +0mV
  • QPI PLL VCore - 1.400V
  • IOH VCore - 1.400V
  • IOH/ICH I/O Voltage 1.650V
  • ICH VCore - 1.250V
  • PWM Frequency - 1067 KHz

5. Finally, on the "CPU Feature" page, we will make the following critical changes:
  • Disable all of the Intel Power saving features.
  • Enable "Turbo Mode Function" (this will give me a 21x multiplier in some cases!)
  • Change my QPI Frequency Selection to "4.800 GT/s.

6. Oh yea, we will increase the fanspeeds:

7. Now, in Windows with EVGA E-LEET we are at 4.2GHz! But we're not done yet!

8. On the memory tab we can see our memory is running at 1600MHz (800x2) Just like we wanted.

9. So now lets push it some more, using EVGA E-LEET, we will go to the overclocking tab, and are going to try increasing the QPI Frequency to 205MHz. This puts me at 4300MHz... still ok...

10. Lets keep going! Up to 215MHz! That is over 4.5GHz on air!

11. Next I will save a validation file in EVGA E-Leet and upload it for bragging rights

http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=449593

That's it! As you can see it is really not very difficult to overclock the new Core i7 Processors, hopefully this helped any questions that you may have!

for Vcore, it can be lowered - but what about all other voltages? Can they be adjusted accordingly as well? I am seeing 82*c uner load with just the vcore set manually at 1.282 (1.317 under load). The rest are set to auto.

Isnt that dangerous voltage for the CPU? I know nothing about overclocking i7 and just want to take my i7 920 to 3.8-4 ghz with safer settings, can anyone give me ballpark figures? I have (6) 2 gig Gskill DDR3 1600 and dual xfx black edition gtx 260's as well as corsair 850 watt.. Thanks

Boy, if you would just do the same thing with the  975.  I've been trying forever to get this information.  I'd like to take the 975 to 3.7 with 1600 memory, and think it would only involve changing the multiplier to 23 and the memory to 160.  But it's the other settings I can't seem to understand.  I'd like to use a Megahalem or True 120 at least.

If you know of such a tutorial, please let me know.  Thanks.

This post alone will make me buy EVGA from now on. Not because of the performance (that is nice too) but the fact that an employee takes the time to give us tutorials like this.

    See ya, Asus.

Just did all this to my new EVGA X58 SLI LE (141-BL-E757-TR)...

Worked right off the bat according to CPUZ and the EVGA CPUZ-like utility. However, after running for a few minutes at pretty much idle the system speaker will let out this constant beep. It's an ear-piercing beep that does not turn off. I looked at the CPUZ utility real quick and the CPU was showing to be at 40C. I am running Corsair's H50 water cooling setup, just FYI. Then, I reboot an the system will no longer see my SSD and fails to boot with this error: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I will work on tackling this.

In the mean time, I don't need to be at 4.0Ghz. I would be fine with 3.33+. So if I can tone down these settings to have a cooler CPU, I'll do it. Any suggestions?

I am looking for some 3.6 specs and volts.  I previously had a different board and the same specs that it liked on the other board dont work on this one at all.  It is odd in my opinion, I would think that the overclocking ability would be more dependent on the processor and memory working in harmony with the volts than the bios from board to board.

Anyway, if someone can give me specs for 3.6 to 3.8 I would appreciate it.  That seems like a very low temp everyday spot for my cpu on air.

I cant even get close to stable, not even past win7 boot.
I have I7 920 Do and X58 Classified with corsair 2000MHZ set manually at spec 8-8-8-25.

I even tried under clocking ram to 1800 MHZ.

I followed the guide to a "T". I made it to 3.8 but temps were 70C idle. (AIR, for now)

but the 4.2 you spec'd, I cant even get past boot without a blu screen.

On air with true 120 cooler, i got 4.0 to boot up and log in, but its not stable and crashed after like 10 seconds. So far got mine stable at 3.5 running at 45 degrees.

Ive got a 920 D0 cooled by a Thermalright True Black Rev. C Ultra 120 Extreme Limited Edition CPU Cooler, Using Geil Evo 1333 DDR3. in an Antec 900 with an Antec 850 True Power. I can boot 4ghz @ stock voltages my ram is cut to 800mhz which puts my oc a little over 1100mhz. It is stable to desktop which is lightning fast with 90 processes at boot including sidebar, but its lasts long enough to load a couple apps, then its random BSOD. I know it's not a heat issue, its ice cold at boot peak was 39c, ran it on a benchmark and it peaked at 50c i was able to get a score , run anything and crash, most of it is random errors, usbhub, irq not less or equal, memory management etc.  as of now @ same stock volts im stable @ 3.859, anything anyone would suggest, my qpi is at 184 i can boot 195 but after that its done.. even adding more volts to the cpu did nothing for it, always a low temperature though, even in bios

    • Enable "Turbo Mode Function" (this will give me a 21x multiplier in some cases!)
Could someone please clarify the "some cases" above?

I started this thread would appreciate some confirmations if the E758-A1 can support i7 920 at 21x "permanently".  By "permanently" I mean the board can run 21x for all 4 cores all the time, regardless of TDP.  It is as if you manually set the CPU Clock Ratio to 21x.  If so, what are the BIOS settings?

    Thanks,

    Good beginner guide.

Would strongly recommend stress-testing the OC's using Prime to make sure the system is 100% stable, this will ensure long life of your pricy components.

I have almost zero probs with this setting followed to the T.  Except very rarely i get blue screen of death outta no where.  When I say rarely I mean like twice a week maybe, any suggestions on how to tone it down to 3.8?  the blue screen says something about processor #2 not responding in a certain time interval.  Like I said the crashes are rare, but happen at really bad times.

Just lower your QPI, and that should be stable. From there you could try lowering your voltages a little, and torture test it every little increment you move down. Is your clock stable now under a torture test?

    Re:EVGA X58 Overclocking Guide 2009/12/08 08:37:33 (permalink)
I followed these steps as outlined (The screenshots are a huge help). I neglected to change the QPI frequency using the E-Leet software since I am content at 4Ghz. System boots fine, runs programs with no issue. I have VT enabled for my virtual machines. However, when I try and run my Windows Experience Rating, the system BSODs with an error: "STOP 0x00000101." Any ideas?

    I am running:
    Windows 7 Pro x64
    EVGA E758-A1 running BIOS SZ2X

    Core i7 920

    ZALMAN CNPS9700

    CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB TR3X6G1600C8D

    THERMALTAKE W0172RU Toughpower 850W

x2 WD Caviar Black 640GB (Intel RAID 0)
