Re:EVGA X58 Motherboards - BIOS 77 Released

Davabled Hrmm, I remember EVGA posting a modification that would be needed to run the newer Xeon chips on these same boards, but I had totally forgotten about it. I'm assuming it's the same modification you're referring to. I can't find the thread (I'm sure it's in the old archived forums somewhere) but I swear it was only needed for the Xeons due to the dual QPI link. Here's a link to the mod I am referring to on Kingpin's site, which seems to indicate it's needed for all the 32nm chips, not just the Xeons. : http://kingpincooling.com/forum/showthread.php?t=599 In any case, interesting find dejanh, and thanks for posting your experiences! Yeah, the thread there is deceiving, it does not talk about Turbo on Westmere arch. chips, only QPI link. However, mod #2 is needed to be able to run Turbo on E759/E760 and E762 actually. It is dirt easy to do but I would advise anyone wanting to do it to send their board in to EVGA or use a Silver Conductive Pen ( http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/8420p.html). Brazen_NL Oh, is this the mod which involves shorting two places on the mobo? If so, yeah, I'\d send it in of at all possible. If you need physical mods done it is generally a good idea to let EVGA do it, especially when they are willing to, otherwise you may bid farewell to your motherboard warranty if anything goes haywire, though EVGA is pretty good about things so yeah... The mod was easy for me, but I have a fair amount of experience soldering stuff and to be honest I actually pencil-modded my board until I go out to get a Silver Conductive Pen to make it more "permanent". Just my $0.02. Disclaimer: Damage from any modification gone wrong will cause issues and may cause warranty issues.

Just an FYI that other manufacturers are now including Intel RAID ROM 10.1.0.1008 (the latest) in their BIOS. Not to mention newer LAN bootROMs, AHCI ROMs, CPU microcodes, 3rd party RAID ROMs, etc. It would be great to see that the company we all love and support is on top of those things.

How did the mod go for you and can you please tell me how you did it exactly? Step by step please. Well, it's quite simple actually... 1. Remove the board out of the case ( this is essential so you can properly see and get to the part that needs to be bridged; it is very small). 2. Look directly above the CPU socket on the front of the board and find the following points on the board. Make sure that you identify the correct points; triple check that they are correct. Credit for the image goes to S_A_V on kingpincooling.com forums. 3. To test out the mod and make sure it works, as well as reduce the chance of a mistake, grab a standard HB pencil and bridge the two points by drawing in a thick graphite line from one point to the other. Rub the pencil from atop of one point across to the top of the other point several times until it looks like there is a clear line of graphite running between the two points. 4 Make sure that you did not connect any other points to these with the graphite and blow away any excess graphite that is on the board. 5. Reinstall the cooler, fire up the BIOS, load defaults, then go back into it and configure everything as normal ensuring that you use the default i7 970 multiplier of 24 and that Turbo is Enabled in CPU settings. EIST (SpeedStep) and C-states do not matter, you can either have them enabled or disabled. If Turbo is working correctly the main tweaker screen should show 133x25 as the speed. 6. Load up Windows and fire up E-LEET, RealTempGT, i7TurboGT, and LinX and stress test your CPU a bit to see whether the Turbo is sticking. Each tool should show multiplier as 25x under 100% load. For compatibility, make sure that you are using LinX with the latest libraries that support 6C/12T chips properly. You can get it here http://www.mediafire.com/...0.64%29_10.3.0.003.zip Once the mod is confirmed working, I would suggest to make the connection permanent, either by soldering the two points or by using a silver conductive pen. I will personally use a silver conductive pen to make my mod permanent (buying it tomorrow).

Alucard666 dmoheban Screw the bios. I'm moving on to Sandybridge... Have fun downgrading ;-) I disagree. Not a down grade at all. Tick for tock the 2600K cpu vantage score is within striking distance of intels 980X and faster than a 975! P67 SLI performance owns or ties X58 SLI performance probably because the 32nm cpu is so much more powerful despite being limited to 8X 8X lanes or 16X 16X hybrid nf200 boards. Check this review out courtesy of sin0822 on Xtremesystems: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=264847 Side note: If this tickles anyone's fancy lets start a separate thread on this so we don't get off focus on the Bios 77 thread. Thanks.

A suggestion for bios - voltages - is to start the adjustment up or down from the current value bios has when you enter bios and not from the lowest value that bios item has.

Man this a busy thread lol. Only complaint i have with the present BIOS is the intel RAID ROM needs updating and the fan controller is buggy i think since it randomly runs my H70 pump from 1380ish to 1410 rpms would like a solid 1400 rpms. Ive tried setting it to 3 pin and 4 pin manually set to 100% no change. Yes i could hook it to my fan controller but thats already full with 4 200mm and 2 120mm fans. Wife put the halt on my liquid cooling till fall part of some agreement i made with her unwillingly :(. Nothing like a woman to stop progress dead in its tracks.

crusheddream Man this a busy thread lol. -just saying-- why even play with the pump speed -I never use any of the fan headers let alone for a water pump. just connect it to a molex to be safe. -break out the rpm wire and only connect that if you want to the mobo.

Applied conductive silver paint today with silver conductive pen. Works nice. Like it much better than temporary graphite solution. Easy to remove too if I ever want to remove the mod, not that there is really any reason to do that ever. Now just to get the new RAID ROM and I will be freaking happy!
